I'm rich, bitch!!

After several months of being unemployed and broke, I got quite the windfall recently. Last week I received a welcome letter from the PhD program I had applied to and they not only accepted me, but offered me a free ride for four years. Today, I opened my mailbox and there was a $2,000 check from an ex-roommate who lived with me about 4-5 years ago and who stiffed me on rent. And if that weren't enough, I also received a $200 check from my grandpa "just because" (which is wierd because he never gives out free money). Lastly, I started a new job this week for the Gender Equity Project and am getting paid a shitload of money to do social research (thanks Master's Degree!). I just wanted to share my good fortune as I usually only start threads to complain about bad shit that happens to me. Help me celebrate by having a few drinks tonight!

Spring has been good for the both of us, then. I start my new (and better paying, better future, better benefits, better everything) job on Monday. If you're buying drinks, I'm drinking 'em.

It's been a crappy Winter. Spring is looking soooooooooooooo good in soooooooooooo many ways....

Congrats to you, Judas!

Sounds good to me.

Oh, and good for you. Seriously. I've been in some hard places and came to appreciate the times when the floodgates opened up again.

Word of advice. Save up. Those rainy days come a lot more than they should.

Alright, this gives me hope that my degree in underwater basket weaving will pay off one day.

...Just kidding. Enjoy it, you earned it!
Congrats!
Getting owed rent from an ex housemate who stiffed you is nigh impossible! You must have done something to make your gods happy.

I found, like, a dollar on the sidewalk. Everything's comin' up Werbal!
I might be coming into some quick cash very soon. Sometimes I help an elderly lady who lives near me by carrying her groceries into her place. Well today I noticed she got a new 42" Panasonic Plasma TV. A gift from her daughter she told me. I figure I can clear at least a grand for that on the street. I always knew God would reward me some day for helping her out.

Hey, now you can afford to pay Amazon back for that Arrested Development DVD!

Karma already dealt me a blow with the several months of unemployment. It's clear skies from here on out.

I think I'm catching a cold. Whee.
That's great. And if it it's your first time dipping into the post college learning pool, welcome to the grad lifestyle. There's many a regretted late night snack and frantic night studying before school deadlines in your immediate future.
Congratulations on the windfall, Deev. I'm with JPT, hide it away for a rainy day. (After those drinks, of course!)
Great news Diva, really glad to hear it.

And Werbal, I found $5 in the pocket of a pair of shorts I ain't worn for ages today. Must be something in the air!!

I'm getting a raise effective tomorrow. Yet I do not know how great this raise will be until I see my paycheck.

Way to kick me when I'm down, world.

Now you have the money to buy a new Arrested Development DVD.
And a P.O. box, so those dirty Commies can't steal it!
My l33t haXing skills are starting to pay off. The money is rolling in here. If you happen to see weird charges and withdrawals in your accounts, though, it's not me! What a sun-shiny day!
I just got a letter in the mail that says that 'I may already be a winner!'. Ah, Spring...

Thanks for the well-wishes everyone.

Gracie: Much of the money will go to paying off credit card bills, but I definitely plan on saving the rest.

That would've been freakin' hilarious if slater hadn't made the same joke about 6 posts before you.

Correct.
Slater's was slightly different. And mocking your MASSIVE indiscretions is always hilarious.

Congrats. Where will you be working on your PhD?
Her PhD will be spent researching into why she doesn't get Battle Royale (sorry, it was just too easy not to...)

I'm going to the CUNY Graduate Center, which is a very progressive program that seeks to teach students not just theoretical foundations of social psychology but emphasisizes the practical application of it to social issues and policy. Having worked for a not-for-profit for 7 years, I really wanted to continue to work in a profession that allowed me to fight for social change.

My two advisors are very distinguished. Dr. Michelle Fine, is committed to participatory action research in schools, prisons and communities, and her writings focus on theoretical questions of social injustice. She has also offered expert testimony in a number of cases involving race, gender and/or class discrimination, such as: Williams v. California (class action suit brought on behalf of poor and working class youth of color attending schools with structural decay; substantial teacher turnover; high levels of uncertified faculty, and inadequate instructional materials); Shannon Richie Faulkner v. the Citadel (sex discrimination at a public college); the school district in Wedowee Alabama in which the principal canceled the prom because of "inter-racial" dating; Newberg v. School District of Philadelphia (young women suing for admission to Central High School in Philadelphia).

My other advisor, Dr. Bill Cross, studies the psychology of African-American identity development in the United States. His groundbreaking book, Shades of Black: Diversity in African American Identity, is one of the most frequently referenced texts on black identity. His model conceptualizing the phases of black identity development has stimulated the growth of identity-development models for application to a wide range of groups, including gays and lesbians, Hispanic/ Latinos, Asian Americans, feminists, and white European Americans. It was this was this model that I used as a basis for my undergrad thesis which examined biracial identity development.

I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with such impressive individuals.

Hell, yeah. And I'll find a way to get national funding so I can live in Japan to conduct my research!

Apparently CUNY's PhD program admittance and subsequent scholarship selection process looks something like this:

I love being in grad school...it is the best. You are basically poor all the time, but the life is a good life.

Here’s to finding just the right project and many hours of rewarding research and writing.

Thanks. Like I said in my first post, I'm working for a great organization that focuses on social research and they are letting me stay on part time while I'm in school. So I'll still be a poor college student, just not as poor.

Yeah well, I love that the CHUDmongers rail against me to take personal responsibility for my failures, yet when I have success they say its because of luck, or in Shane's example, a random crap shoot. I've said it once and I'll say it again, the hypocrisy on these boards is astounding.

Hypocrisy? Since all those failures you mentioned were stupidity-related, the skepticism in this thread is hardly unwarranted.

This is no different than Devin winning an award for his polite demeanor or Millette being honored for his lush mane of flowing hair. Forgive us for WTFing a little.

Or a lot.

Millette's lush mane of flowing hair must be on his back.

Although many Chewers like to label them as such, people aren't just smart or not smart. They differ on amount of knowledge on a particular subject, but also on how many subjects they are knowledgable about. Saying I'm stupid because of a few threads (and let's face it, out of the thousands of posts I've made over the years only a handful can even be considered "stupid") is like saying a rocket scientist is a retard because he doesn't understand the plot of Memento. Generalizing someone's overall intelligence from a few specific examples is just faulty logic and has no bearing on whether that person is knowledgable on subjects other than the ones you've interacted with them about.

Faulty logic? I don't have to listen to the entire Fall Out Boy catalog to know that they're a terrible band. Their single on the radio tells me everything I need to know.

Every single person here has made stupid posts, but you're the only one who is practically famous for being a nitwit. You can feel free to view this all as some wicked and unjust conspiracy to smear your character, or you can realize that when you were stupid in the past, you were tremendously, awfully, hilariously, awesomely stupid. The sort of stupid that people remember.

(And yes, if a rocket scientist couldn't figure out Memento, I would assume that he was a functioning idiot who just happened to be competent in a narrow, specialized field. You can teach a parrot to talk, but that doesn't mean it'll say anything worth listening to.)

Cheers!

Of course that's faulty logic. There's a reason people should not judge a book by its cover. Sometimes there's more to a person (a movie, a band, whatever) than meets the eye.

The only people who remember and constantly bring up these "hilariously stupid" posts are a select few who enjoy taking jabs at me. The general Chewer population doesn't give a shit about me or those threads.

There are plenty of "absent minded professor" types in the world (Einstein was considered one), who are extremely intelligent people in regards to their specialty, but who are incompetant in other subjects or aspects of their lives.
