WHAT ABOUT BRIAN? on ABC

Anybody else watch this?

This is the new show from executive producer J.J. Abrams and the screenwriter of For Love of the Game and City of Angels. It is about 3 couples all in different stages of their relationships and their single friend, who is the best friend of one of the guys and the brother of one of the women. Barry Watson (the oldest brother from 7th Heaven) is the star and the show also features Rosanna Arquette, Matthew Davis, Amanda Detmer, Raoul Bova, Sarah Lancaster and Rick Gomez.

The sneak preview (er, season premiere) aired on Sunday in the timeslot usually reserved for Gray's Anatomy and the second episode aired Monday at 10pm.

Anyway, so far I am digging it.

If you missed it, you can read a complete rundown of the premiere here and the second episode here.

It's good stuff and I recommend you check it out.

Supposedly it is thirtysomething for Gen-Xers. I'm curious about it, but not enough to give up DVR slots from my coveted Sunday shows. Is Monday its normal timeslot?

I was bored out of mind, turned on the television, this came on. The next night, same thing, so I watched both episodes.

Everyone on this show has perfect hair. It's not brain-dead, but everyone has perfect hair and seems to live comfortably, with tastefully matching clothes. The main character gets upset, doesn't sleep, drives for hours, and he still has perfect hair. You're supposed to be concerned for the people and it's supposed to be real life, and it's easy to do so because you don't have anywhere else to go. I watched all of it. Moreso than a lot of the other things, it has a story (Abrahms knows what he's doing), and that story actually progressed during however long I spent watching it. I like pretty people, and supposedly, if I work hard enough, I can be one of them. But it's like Saved By the Bell... watching somehow makes sure that I won't live the life I'm seeing?

But I'll probably watch again if I can, I always do. I've never seen thirtysomething, but this doesn't seem like it has a lot to do with that show. Especially handled without nuance was a couple with kids deciding to have an open relationship on the drop of a dime. There was also a lot of money spent on the soundtrack rights, and some pleasing shots geared to those songs. Some of the actors and comedic touches were very likeable.

I think I was in a bad mood when I watched this. Or I am in one right now.
