New Volkswagen Commercials

Thread Starter
Has anyone else seen this group of commercials that show couples/friends talking in their VW's right before they are involved in an accident

The shock value the first time is good and there are still a couple of the commercials (the one with the white guy and black guy) hitting the red truck that get me every time.

Thoughts?

I like the ones with Peter Stormare better.

I like effect that they are going for.

The only thing that kind of bothers me though is how each one ends with someone in the car saying "holy sh...." and than they tell you it's a VW. Not sure what it is about that exactly that bothers me, but it just comes across as kind of lame.

In the commercial, the guy goes Holy sh... then it flashes to the name of the add. "Safe Happens." Insert the Sh... into safe and what do you get?

Clever ad.

Ahhh, so that's why it bothers me, it's a pun.

I love Stormare but those ads were atrocious.
As far as the new ones, I would think Paul Greengrass has some United 93 work to do.

i have only two of them so far, not sure how many there actually are. but the first one my roommate and i dsaw had us laughing for a while. it was the white guy/black guy one. i like them. though i find myself laughing at car insurance ads where they show people getting into wrecks. so i guess i am saying that this kind of ad has been done before.

Hey, if they put as much effort into their car quality as they did their commercials...

I'll have to agree here. VW floats on this reputation of "quality", but in reality, their cars are not that great. Build is shoddy, long term quality is questionable, and cost of ownership is epic.

I personally know someone here in Chattanooga who was involved in a side impact accident in a 2003 Golf in which the driver of the VW was killed. He was directly behind her in the back seat, and broke his collarbone in the accident.

So whenever I see those ads, I wince a little, knowing that it is more hollywood than anything.

I would have to disagree. I've owned three VW models. Fox, Jetta and Golf. All three were driven in excess of 150,000 miles. All three required no major engine/transmission repairs up until I sold/traded in the vehicle. In fact, the only costs involved were regular maintenance (i.e. oil change, new tires, new brake pads, etc.). Two of them (Jetta and Fox) were in major accidents and suffered minimal damage (in addition to myself having no injuries). VW has my business for life.

What were the years of those cars? I bet your Jetta wasn't a 2000 model, or your tune would be quite different.

Anyone know if these are online?

1989 Fox. 1995 Golf, and 2003 Jetta.

In general, VW has a very good track record with their vehicles. Is it possible to have a few aberrations? Sure. Overall though? A better car manufactor than the majority.

We got caught off guard by both of the spots we saw. My wife actually left the room and cried after the head-on accident spot. Been there, done that, and the end resolution was not just a "Damn, are you okay?"

I will say that I did say "Oh sh-" right before though.

I liked Stormare's commercials. They were just so off-the-wall that they stuck with you. Nothing like seeing a rice burner flung 200 feet followed by a barely coherent "Ya, Vee Dub..."
