This is why I love eBay...

Just arrived this morning...

It contains the second half of the original illustrated serialisation of War Of The Worlds from Pearson's Magazine. Published in 1897, the year before Wells rewrote it as a self-contained novel, there are a few notable scenes that were later removed. It's a thing of beauty.

I collect H.G. Wells first editions, and this is something I've been seeking for a LONG time. Just need to track down the first half now...

Wow... great find!

How much did that set you back?

Less than $100, including postage. I consider that a pretty enormous bargain.
Fuck yeah... seriously... who would let it go for that price?

A collectors item!

I really, really don't like people with disposable incomes.

That is a ginormous bargain, as I usually refer to eBay as gougeBay. All bitching aside, eBay has some really excellent finds, let me tell you! Problem is that I find it sorta addictive, if you don't keep youself in check.

On the topic of sweet eBay finds, I found the full three sets of Star Wars Burger King Drinking glasses from '77 to '83. They were all in mint condition and set me back only $70 US for all 12 Glasses.

The rest of the book is full of fantastically racist stories about brave colonial Englishmen killing spear-chucking natives with rifles.

Well... when they're right, they're right! Right?

OK, now you've sold me.

I'd love to see more shots of the illustrations from the book.

Neither do I. That's why I give praise to the concept of "birthday money".

Also in my haul:

A 1966 magazine about the bold new wave of superhero movies.

The Marvel adaptation of Harryhausen's Seventh Voyage of Sinbad.

A 1953 French film magazine with a Vincent Price/House of Wax cover.

War of the Worlds was illustrated by Warwick Goble, and Google tells me he was a big deal in the world of 19th Century illustration.

Or did you mean the spear-chuckers?

All those items are just brilliant, Dan. What's cool is that you know they're the real thing. I've been trying to get the Robocop: Criterion Collection for years now, but I've always been hesitant because it's so easy for people to try and pawn off bootlegs as the real thing.

Holy shit, I had that issue when I was a kid. Read the crap out of it.

So do Tom Cruise's kids live or die in this one?
I can't fuckin wait to see that new Batman movie!

seriously though, those are some awesome finds.
Cool stuff. I'd love to see more scans, especially from the superhero magazine.
Those are indeed some awesome finds Dan. You must have quite an enviable collection at this point, including what you've found beyond what's pictured here. Please continue to scan more of your collection if you don't mind.

Speaking of enviable collections, I'd love if you could put up a pick of your complete set of BK STAR WARS glasses Patrick. Just reading your post brought back fond memories of when I still had them myself. Man I miss 'em, I can still smell the paint off the graphics when you drank out of them. Kinda like a 'caine drain.

Holy shit.

I've never really had that kind of collector bug myself, but I love looking at the collections of those who do. Seeing something like that original War of the Worlds printing is practically mystical. Maybe I prevent myself from feeling that urge to collect because I'm afraid I'd get out of control with that feeling.

Out of curiosity, who was the artist on that Sinbad comic? It has a Gil Kane look about it.

I would have bought that magazine just for the arte noveau cover art, but the original WOTW story is a real treasure.

Dan, you jammy sod.

That's it. No more needs saying.
