Best British Movie?

I'd have to say Lawrence of Arabia myself

Second would be Get Carter.

What else rocks?

Trainspotting, but that would probably be a generational thing.

If it counts as a UK film (which like Lawrence I would think that it does) then Bridge on the River Kwai.

The Long Good Friday is extraordinarily kick-ass. It's the last great British gangster film.

Nil By Mouth, Gangster No.1, Get Carter, Kes, and any number of Ealing Comedies.

Come on. I mean, if I told you it didn't involve the wingspan of swallows I'd only be deceiving myself.

This category is a little on the wide side, don't you think? It's a bit much to choose from. We're supposed to compare Monty Python movies, Mike Leigh movies, Ealing comedies, Kubrick films, and everything else ever made in Britain, and come up with a winner? That's ludicrous. Narrow it down a little, man.

I get the impression Diebitter has probably seen about 6 "British movies", which is the only way you could think to pick one out of all of them.

It's kind of like picking the best movie starring an actor whose name starts with an S.

Gee, I think he may be asking which British film you like the most. Not exactly cryptic is it?

The Long Good Friday. I guess I better add IMO before everybody starts peeing themselves...

No, but it is pointlessly random, given that "British film" isn't a genre. As was mentioned before, it's like asking what your favourite American movie is. It's so broad as to be virtually pointless.

How do you even begin to compare Withnail & I, Layer Cake and Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed?

"Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed" has more letters, so is the obvious winner.

Seriously...Way too broad a category. "What's the best Iranian film actually available in America?" is a category. Many decades of british film is not.

Nope. Seen hundreds. I am English, BTW. It's just Lawrence towers above ALL movies, not just British ones, it's an easy choice. 'Get Carter' is just one of my faves after that.

Let's put it this way. I just thought of the best films ever, and picked out the two British ones nearest the top
