The Dvd Slice!

I'm starting this up for a discussion of the latest dvd releases.

My latest column is up here.

Too many movies to pick from today! I need to grab the Killler Queen box set, Evils of the Night, Bazaar Bizarre and the Blue Underground 2-pack. And I've gotta watch Three Extremes 2 to see if it's as good as the first one...
Cool feature!

I had no idea of the existence of that Kiyoshi Kurasawa slasher- thanks!

The ZOMBIE SOLIDERS two pack sounds ideal. Cool piece.
Is it just me or does Rooms for Tourists sound like a Hostel ripoff with women in the leads?
I'm picking up Andre the Butcher tomorrow.
Maybe its better than Hostel, it would be hard to make it worse.

It was made four years ago.

Thanks man. I've been doing this feature every week, just wanted to let people know it was out there. I find a lot of great obscure movies by doing this.

Just don't expect a good movie. It's a great movie to sit down with beer and pretzels and laugh at, but it seems like a lot of reviewers were expecting some slasher classic or something. It's gory and silly.

Didn't know that. I don't visit the site often... could someone post links in this thread when it comes up?

Yeah, I'll update this thread everytime I put up a new one.

Today's dvd releases...

Delicatessen looks amazing.

Also, apologies to anyone who bought Bazaar Bizarre because of my column last week- man is that movie a mess. Couldn't get through the whole thing yet, but there's some really painful reenactments in it... makes it almost unwatchable.
You've never seen "Delicatessan", man? Dude, it's totally fun!

Completely missed it. I'm a huge fan of The City of Lost Children too, so I'm gonna have to track this down.

I knew I liked you for a reason. This forgives the FROM BEYOND incident. Barely.

It was a lot of fun. Thanks for the tip.

One day I will redeem myself for that....

Here's today's Slice. Not too much, but the Masters dvds are always solid. Plus, Tamara.

Ok, can someone please tell me what was so great about Funny Games?? IMO it was the most unwatchable movie ever.

It's very cool that you've covered Michael Haneke. I think not enough people call him a horror filmmaker. As for "Funny Games", I think unwatchable is something of a compliment to that film.

Unfortunately, I don't mean it as a compliment. I thought the film was boring but there was one thing that really ruined it for me. I'll only say remote control to avoid any spoilers.

Use the spoiler tags.

They're apparantly remaking Funny Games. I haven't seen anything about it yet so haven't done up a news piece yet... never saw the original either so can't give an opinion on it.

Here's yer new Slice.

!

And is Gemini also directed by Takashi Miike, or does he only do the featurette?

"Cannibal" does sound pretty good.

Just the featurette. Although the movie was directed by Shinya Tsukamoto, director of Tetsuo:The Iron Man. I should probably have mentioned that, right? Arg... running to change it now.

Oh, that's a major detail. Should be fucked up, no?

Also, is there anything Takashi Miike WON'T direct?

Miike has to direct 25 films a year or his creative juices will swell up inside him and explode.

Here's today's Slice. Little late, but least I got it out this week, right? I gotta check out Beyond The Wall of Sleep and Straight into Darkness.
All these 666 releases really aren't being released in expectation of a strong shelf life, are they?

I watched Beyond the Wall of Sleep last night, what a mess. The movie was shot in B&W with only the bloody scenes in color(like Sin City). Of course those scenes were thrown in in quick flashes. I'm not sure how close it is to the story since I'm not that big of a Lovecraft fan. *runs and hides as rotten fruit is thrown my way*

Dellamorte Slice!

Nothing much this week. Although i'm definitely hunting down a copy of Project Valkyrie.

Nazi cyborgs? "Project Valkrye" sounds like my kind of movie.

That is one crappy Hills cover. The original poster was pretty cool. This looks like someone put it through photoshop to make it look like a Troma release.

Huge list today.

Fabfunk- hope you didn't pick up Project: Valkyrie- it's, uhm... well... it's pretty damn boring.
Devil's Sword is wonderful Indonesian lunacy in the vein of great garbage Lady Terminator and Dangerous Seductress.

Gotta disagree with Sick Girl, which I thought was nearly unwatchable. Deer Woman is pretty great though.

I'm slightly opposite on the two. I though Sick Girl was marginally "ok", but hated the Deer Woman (but not her "rack"). I'm just not a fan of the Landis "tongue in cheek" style.
That's why I loved it -- it reminded me of one of the lighter X-Files episodes. Back when the show was good.

I definitely got the X-Files vibe from Deer Woman. The more I think about (and rewatch) that episode the more I love it. I didn't even realize Benben was the guy from Dream On.... he's great as the lead- got the comedic timing down perfect.

But I dug Sick Girl. It's not nearly the best MoH- but I think it appeals to the same crowd that liked May. It's just another funny, awkward loner story- McKee seems to do those well. (i'm writing reviews on both of these- hopefully have them both up by the end of today)

Fair enough. That seems to be the prevalent opinon. I would probably have enjoyed it more as a second season "break" in tension, but really wanted the first season to be an continuing escalation in horror quality. That of course didn't work out either.

Pathetic Slice!

Not much in the way of releases this week...

Alex, I am jealous of the "To Serve Man" avatar. Nice choice.

Thanks man! Thought of it while I was watching that Twilight Zone marathon last week... got my little cousin hooked on that show. All about raising them right!

Here's today's releases. Lot of crap today, although Zombiegeddon sounds like a fun time.

Just made it up in time for the day! Lot of quality releases today... it's strange how the companies wait till the end of the month to throw everything out there.
"Feed" sounds genuinely disturbing, even if it is a directorial snub job.

Also, there should be more love given to "Species".

Caught it last night. Not quite sure what was supposed to be so disturbing about it. Of course I also don't understand what was so disturbing about Seven either.

I've got City of Rott on the way to me- cannot wait to check it out.

Also on a completely random note- I'm pretty sure I have Bikini Hoe-Down on an old VHS copy somewhere in my house...

I'm pretty certain "Ghost In A Teeny Bikini" is only porn... Ray's muse appears to be Nicole Sheridan. He can do better.

"Lemming" sounds really cool, how come I missed it when it first came out?
