Lemming's a french flick- don't think it got much of a release over here.... just one theater in the city back in May, I believe. I hadn't heard of it either.

It was one of the better "Masters of Horror", but that's not really saying much. Steven Weber seemed miscast, but as he co-wrote the screen adaptation, I'm sure that's how he got the job. I'd rank it below "Dreams in the WitchHouse" and "Cigarette Burns", but probably above all the other ones (save Miike's as they never broadcast it so I haven't seen it yet).

The original story had a lot of Psychological context that Argento only alluded to, so the main characters motivation doesn't ever come through. But he delivered on the T&A and Gore, so I can't fault him too much.

Wow, I NEED a copy of the THEM/Beats from 20,000 Fathoms double disc! Awesomeness!

Yeah, that's a pretty sweet set. You can find it for 10 bucks at places, too. Pisses me off- cause I've got that disc of Them! that's the old friggin' snapcase that WB used to always put out. I'm just hoping that the 2pack has the same behind the scenes thing that the single disc has.

Man, I agree with you... well, not the Lovecraft part- but what a mess this movie is. Watched it today and it gave me a headache. I think it'd be impossible to follow if I didn't know the story already- this is one of the most overedited films I've seen in a while.

In any case, this week's slice is now up. Lots of good stuff today- be sure and check out that Savage Sinema set, I can't say enough good things about it.

More horror goodness. I need those big-ass Passport boxsets, I think- even though it seems like the quality ain't that great.
I can't get into this "Supernatural" show- the leads are too generic and unlikeable.

But that "Toxie" set- that'll test me.
I've been wanting to see Shock-O-Rama for a while.

Slice. Lots of shitty slasher flicks coming out, hoo boy.
Great slice, Alex.

The Great Yokai War was one of my favourite films last year. Just giddily macabre and delightfully playful at times. I can't think of any other kids film which has such graphic dismemberments and has the heroes being boiled to death in vats of pure hatred. The disc looks exactly the same as the HK edition I have, which is great.
"My Little Eye" is a FANTASTIC horror movie about reality TV, so, hey, they're not all bad.

Great slice this week. I've heard quite a bit about "Shadow: Dead Riot" (particularly the fact that it's supposedly awful), but really, what kind of title is that?
Thread Starter
Yeah, I actually got hate mail about Dead Riot from a few people. One called it Shadow: Dead Laughter (oh, the wit) and lamented it being released unrated.

Still haven't seen it, though... guess my sources were wrong.
It's billed "In the vein of Saw" because Saw is popular. I like Saw, personally, it's a decent little horror flick. Too bad the same can't be said about the sequel.

That Stephen King collection is a bizarre one though.

Very late slice, once again- sorry guys. It's due to me getting ridiculously sick over the last couple of days.
Okay....added "Dawn" and "Jingoku" at your recommendation. What'd you think of "Nails"?

And seriously considering the nekkid british witch movie and some vodka for a movie night with my wife....
Thread Starter
I really dug Nails... which is pretty impressive, since I hate experimental films for the most part. But it's really hardcore- not for the squeamish- and does have somewhat of a story to it. It's like living through someone's bad acid trip.

Check the trailer at their site for an idea of what to expect. It's a really twisted flick.

(btw- Dawn has become one of Tempe's best-selling flicks- if not #1. I really love that film.)
I love "Hard Candy". I dunno if it should be something that fits within the Slice, but it's certainly creepy and bares its exploitation roots quite clearly. The direction from David Slade, who's doing "30 Days Of Night", really makes it feel exciting, unpredictable and cinematic for a film with only two characters taking place mostly in one single space, and Ellen Page is FANTASTIC.

Yeah, this is a week late- but I couldn't just skip over last week's releases- some amazing dvds came out. And a helluva lot of re-releases.
"Texas Chain Saw Massacre", "Nightmare On Elm Street", five disc "Dust Devil", "The Dead Zone", "Dracula", "Frankenstein", "Lady Vengeance", "Imprint", "Street Trash"... greatest horror DVD week ever?

One of the guys at AICN posted a revealing negative reivew of "Chaos" that's worth reading, but the search engine can't recall it for some reason, though AICN's Capone liked it. The negative one, from one of their regulars, is a fascinating and funny read.

Yeah, I've got a copy of Chaos waiting for me to open it up- I'm going to get to it soon, but I've heard very mixed things about it. I like my movies as hardcore as they get, so we'll see if I like it for that.
No mention of Abominable? Release date got pushed till tomorrow. My copy from deepdiscountdvd is in my hands (delivered at work) waiting for me to watch it tonight. Bigfoot gore AHOY!

That was last week's list! This week's dvd slice is coming tommorow.

I have Abominable. It's fun, but it's nothing so special. Some good kills, but it's a weird mix of Rear Window with a slasher flick.

Sorry to jump the gun... oops. My bad. I know it had an earlier release date originally (Sept.) & I thought it was just forgotten. You have permission to order a retarded Sasquatch to bite off my face.

No worries bro. My fault for being so late with the dvd lists.

(and yes, the biting off of the face is the best part of the movie)

The story is credited to "an original idea by David DeFalco and Steven Jay Bernheim," the original idea apparently being to remake LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT without paying for the rights.

That's an awesome price for the Exorcist boxed set. Along with both cool versions of the first film, you've got the really neat third film and three coasters, too.

More box sets and little known horror gems.
I've never heard of "The Other"... looks good. Nice cover, too. "Salvage" sounds like a cool premise, but I don't recognize anyone involved. And it's very cool that Criterion is handling "Clean, Shaven", which seems to have been forgotten by time.

But I'm gonna disagree with you on the "boring" element of the "Dark Water" remake. I thought the sadness and loss at the heart of the film was devastating and in many ways it even improves upon the (admittedly scarier) original. It felt like an early Polanski film for me.
Thread Starter
That's the first and last time I ever want to hear Dark Water compared to Polanski. Polanski's films had mood- something Dark Water is lacking. He also managed to have interesting things happen to his characters- something that doesn't happen at all in the drippy water movie.

I think I would've hated that movie a lot more if I didn't have Connolly to look at and pete postlewaite to chuckle at.

In any case- here's today's list. Nothing much worth your time besides Slither, unforunately. Unless you're one of those Saw fans.... (shudder)
Evil Bong, starring Tommy Chong. Hear that sound? It's the sound of the bottom falling off the barrel.
"Monster House" was a lot scarier than any "kid's film" has any right to be. Some good humor too- definitely worth a rent at least.
Haven't seen this column in some time. I know the holiday season is a little light on horror and I can't speak for everyone else, but I've been missing a regular dose. Need some help gathering info?

The Descent hits this week. As does an Aztec Mummy set,...

Sorry for the hiatus with this. I got burnt out on writing about crappy releases during halloween, methinks.

THE SLICE!!!

"Shaitan" is mega-twisted. Really, it's another dumb teens-killed-in-the-backwoods-by-superpowered-incestuous-hicks, but it earns points for some idiosyncratic plot elements, an exciting visual style, and Vincent Cassel's unfiltered insanity. Also, the lead girl is hotter than the Sun.

And "Angst" sounds fun- I'm pretty sure we've all dated someone like that girl.

Dark Remains does look promising, but there's no word on a UK release yet.

Watched it last night right after The Descent. Not really sure which one did it but I was almost afraid to turn out the lights and go to sleep. I'd have to say it was Dark Remains though since I had already seen The Descent.

Wow... Vidocq finally comes States-side! Cool little atmospheric Victorian-era "Jack the Ripper-ish" tale with wire-fu in and a supernatural flair. Like a Made-for-TV Brotherhood of the Wolf.
Does anyone else have an opinion on Vidocq? Because the guy went on to make the aggressively incoherent "Catwoman", and I find it hard to believe he ever had an eye for anything.
Pitof was JP Jeunet's right-hand-man for years. Ignore the Catwoman part of his resume... if it's possible.

It's not revolutionary, but Vidocq's got some atmosphere, sword-fighting, mystery, and low-budget charm (Dark Shadows or Dr. Who level, that is, but there all the same). I discovered it a few years ago at a comic shop on a bootleg dvd (before it got the ridiculously long US title). With the massive influx of foreign genre films this millenia, I'm surprised how long it took to import here in spite of its TV-Movie-of-the-Week level of quality. It's worth a rental IMO. Ambience reminded me of From Hell meets the Beauty of the Beast TV show.

I'd also be interested in a 2nd opinion (for comparison's sake), but I don't know anyone else who's seen it.

Power Ranger, huh? It Waits was ok... More importantly, Cerina Vincent is also the topless foreign exchange student in Not Another Teen Movie. On that note, bring on another Bigfoot movie with Lance!

Apocalypse & The Beauty Queen
is directed by Thomas Smugala. How great of a name is that?
