I AM LEGEND- Starring Will Smith!!

Sobs...

I usually hate being a fanboy about things, but I can't see this turning out well, at all...
The book doesnt end on a happy note, if I remember correctly. You think they're going to keep that in the movie?
And yeah, this is gonna be a Will Smith sized train wreck.
I think it's time to sing the Doom Song...

I'm still standing that Dennis Quaid would be a better Neville, Smith just seems way to young for the role.
Smith is all wrong for the role.
If you want to make the main character Black to make a comment then cast Denzell Washington.
But this is gonna turn into another Will Smith wiscrack every minute shoot em up.
I sense a wacky dance number as Smith locks himself in his safe house and dances to 80s hip-hop.
I don't have a problem with Smith being in this. I do, however, have a problem with Akiva Goldsman's attachment to the project.

Visually, though, I'm sure it'll be nice to look at.
And another classic novel gets turned into a pointless summer action slam. I can't wait to see him in Ringworld.
I liked the suggestion someone on the CHUD boards made with Steve Buscemi.

Cast Djimon Hounsou. I'd love to see him kick ass in a movie like this.
The problem is that it's not a story about kicking ass at all. It will be now, of course.

Christ, don't give the bastards ideas.
Oh, that would never happen anyway. He's clearly much more suited to play Valentine Michael Smith in Stranger in a Strange Land. Of course, they'd just call it Stranger, as long titles frighten the American audience. And instead of becoming the new messiah, he'd take down a cybernetic drug ring.

"Grok that, bitch! Aawww, HELL no!"

I'm down with Francis Lawrence. Of all the directors emerging from music videos, he seems completely potent with vision where it counts. Even from that first 'Constantine' teaser, around when the buzz was horrible, real direction and style was evident. That movie should have been a misfire by all accounts, until it turned out damn fine. Anyway, that guy making big-budget genre is not a terrible thing.
I look forward to Robert Neville getting cabin fever in herre.

I just don't think he's a good choice because of the preconceived notions everyone has about him. There's going to be no way to sit down and appreciate what he's going through- the whole thing you're going to be thinking about his past goofy movies. I don't hate the guy, he's just all kinds of wrong for this role.

I agree that the decision for Francis Lawrence to direct seems pretty good.... the movie will look nice, at the very least.

As for that armory, i'm wondering how they're going to stick that into the movie? I really hope they don't warp the story around so there's a group of survivors trapped in there or something.
Having just finished reading this I have to agree that Smith is all wrong for this role, and not just because of his incessant jiggy-ness. When I read this I pictured someone a little more weathered than Willy. Someone who seems to have lived through hard times. Not someone who has "big willy style." One has to wonder how this film will work with the lead basically by himself the whole time, the person playing this lead will need some pretty heavy acting chops IMHO. Mr. Smith ain't that guy.

I should strike you down for that... No one should fuck with Ringworld.

I agree. But sadly, we will both be denied. Eventually, someone will indeed fuck with it.
They'll make HALO, instead.

I love The Omega Man movie, and I can already tell that this movie will not be like that one, sure Heston overacted a lot, but it has some genuinely good moments in it, and is hilarious sadly in an unitentional way. Maybe that's what'll happen with this movie, although being hilarious in an unintentional way isn't a good thing for this remake, and putting Will Smith, who I think is a pretty good actor in other movies, in this role is a step in the wrong direction, but maybe the movie will come out good.

Someone, who doesn't write like a twelve-year old, did. It's called Consider Phlebas. It would be far more interesting film.
Then again, the story is pretty unconvential by summer blockbuster type standards, so maybe it won't be another typical 'Will Smith' kind of movie.
I must agree, I love The Omega Man, have done since I was a kid & unlike other bad habits I didn't grow out of it. In fact as I write this I'm listening to the soundtrack album by Ron Grainer which I also consider the greatest soundtrack ever - some of the music just MOVES me, man. Now Chuck's version of I Am Legend might be nothing to write home about but I'll bet my last British Pound that's it'll piss on any Will Smith version.

Just like pulling Jim Carrey into a film automatically introduces his schtick, pulling Will Smith into this movie will automatically bring action jackson trash talking schtick to this story. Just think about what he did to Asimov.

1. The Jim Carrey thing, untrue, "Eternal Sunshine".

2. The studio restructured an unrelated script to ape Asimov's books and grab name recognition, so mistakes were made before Smith was even attached.

I'm not saying this film won't be crap, but I'll sideline ire and interest until I see how it comes together.
I don't think Will Smith wrote the script to I, Robot. And to be honest, I thought that was a pretty good film with a really bad action climax.

I don't think Ali was filled with a bunch of one-line shit talking because he was in it (though Ali was known for his shit talking).
Will Smith isn't Neville from Richard Matheson's book. However, he's the guy I kept thinking for the role when I read Mark Protosevich's script a few years ago. And I mean "Ali" Smith, not Fresh Prince. I understand that's the draft they're using for this film?

I'm being turned off by all these references to disease centers and so forth. So it's just a plaugue now? It's looking like this is going to be the third time this book hits the screen with no vampires.

The vampires in the book were caused by a plague I believe. At least that's how I remember it.I'll have to reread the book again soon.Matherson tried to scientifically explain vampires right? It was a bacteria that kept the body going after death and was vulnerable to sunlight, exposure for long periods to air (hence stakes or deep cuts killing vampires in the book),something in garlic causing a sick reaction, etc.Hopefully, they are just trying to get the basics on how any plague like that would spread so quickly although I share your fears. The worst thing they can do is make this basically an Omega Man remake or a knock-off of 28 Days Later (super rabies plague). Give us vampires! If not, then what's the point? The whole idea of the story was that Neville by the end of the novel had become a legendary figure like the vampires of lore.

A legendery figure among whom? The vampires? In the book are they protrayed as intelligent or retaining some culture, unlike your common flesh-hungry zombies? I haven't read it.

Yes, legendary among the vampires.SPOILER,SPOILER IF YOU WANT TO READ THE BOOK OR ARE WORRIED ABOUT POTENTIAL MOViE SPOILERS.

There are two types of vampires in the book. Ones that are still alive but infected with the bacteria. My memory is a little hazy but I think these are the more inteligent ones. Then there are the "dead" dead vampires.Humans infected with the bacteria but are reanimated after death. I think these are the dumb ones. Neville comments several times about their stupidity in attacking the house and they attack their own. One even climbs a lampost and tries to fly because he thinks he is a bat. Neville kills both of these groups without question(hell, they're vampires right?) during the daylight while they go into some kind of coma.Neville learns about a group of people who are infected but technically still alive. They have come up with a way to hold the bacteria at bay for awhile. They hate and fear Neville because he kills their own while they sleep. All he leaves behind are the bodies of the dead infected including their loved ones, making him like an invisible boodyman to them. Because of this and the fact that he is the last "normal"(which is no longer considered normal since the world is nothing but vampires) person alive makes him a legendery figure.

I don't know if this is funny or true. And that's a sad statement about modern Hollywood.

The Last Man on Earth (Vincent Price) was pretty close to the book, if I remember right.

The thing that bugs me about this film is that so much of the book is internal, I don't see it working without a voiceover and/or radical changes to the narrative.

Will Smith could work, if he weren't playing "Will Smith." Of course, the bigger the budget, the more the studio will want that on-screen persona, I'd imagine.

"I am Legend" is a great book. The best rendition I've seen of it on the screen is Vincent Price's movie: "The Last Man on Earth". It followed the book as good as any movie can. Other than changing the main characters name to Morgan instead of Neville. Will Smith in the lead role, No, I don't think so! When Charlton Heston reprised the role in "The Omega Man" it lost much of the feel of the original, thou it is still a good movie in its own right. I hate to think what this latest remake will be. My best thought to offer is, "The Last Man on Earth" is available on DVD, and its fairly cheap, go buy it and forget about Mr. Smiths new movie....
I could take the casting of Will Smith but this is the black kiss of fucking death for I AM LEGEND, if you ask me.

Lousy kids. They ruin everything, I tells ya!

Man, I read that yesterday and must've blocked it out of my head.

I agree completely, kids ruin movies. See Mimic.
You know, I wasn't even aware that I was still holding on to some hope for this film, but that bit of news took it away, so apparently I was. How many decades must go by before someone makes a real movie out of this damn book?
I was actually hopeful that Wild Wild West was going to be fun time at the movies. As soon as that hip-hop horsefuck infested the theme all hope was lost.

What a waste of potential.

Robert Neville drives a car. Those AICN scoops are just getting better & better.

Well, the thing is that it doesn't have much room for bodies or supplies- and what's Neville need speed for? He shouldn't be running from anything (except for that one scene where he stays out too late)

I'm really, really concerned about what they did to this story.

If I had just one guess, it would be "buggered it senseless".
Well the story is mostly psychological, which frankly doesn't translate well to screen. I would suggest its going to be more like Omega Man, which took I am Legend and turned it all actiony.

Anyone ever see I am Legend with Vincent Price?
I hope that this movie flops in a big, big "Wild Wild West" kind of way.
I love this book, and the original Vincent Price flick was great - oh, and it's in the public domain, so you can drop on by Google video and watch it today:

I just hope they keep the same ending as the book.

I don't think this is a big enough thing to write an article about, but still it's an interesting tidbit of the shoot.

The other day I was walking to the subway when I saw a crew shooting something on cranes above grand central- on the strip of overpass that travels through the Metlife (Pan Am) building. My girl mentioned today that her father rode through it on a bike tour- and they had sewer covers with grass on them, burnt out taxis- a very apocalyptic looking design. Gotta be I Am Legend, I thought...

So I did some searching and found this article- yep, he's taking a trip to the Metlife building.
