This guy had more troubles - and more chances - than anyone, but he could pitch.

I remember he once complained about living in New York because of the 'high crime rate.'

You just scared the hell out of me...I thought that you were talking about guitarist Steve Howe when I read the headline.

Yeah I also thought you were talking about Yes/Asia masterprogger STEVE HOWE and I had to put Stroszek on pause and catch my breath before reading about the sad desmise of one of my favorite musicians. alas, it was just someone I don't know anything about... phew.

I also thought of the guy from Yes. It's still sad, though.

This was my precise thought process when I saw this posted this morning, but I didn't want to say anything for fear of seeming disrespectful. But I see everyone else who posted had the exact same reaction. Life sure is weird.

I thought that name sounded familiar. But I too was thinking of the musician.

Apparently, nobody around here is a big sports fan.

Well, Howe's major claim to fame was that he had seven suspensions for drug-related offences. This was back in the early 80s when baseball had a huge coke problem, but when he was nailed 3 times in September he was suspended for the season. Lest people think MLB turned an entirely blind eye, he was expelled from baseball after being busted a 7th time in 1992, but an arbitrator later decided the penalty was too severe.

Not exactly Cy Young, more a cautionary tale.

I'm as guilty as anyone else - I was happy with what he was doing for the Yankees in the early 90s and didn't really give a shit about what he was doing off the field, as long as he didn't get his stupid ass suspended.

Sad, but not unexpected. That guy's been living on borrowed time for 20 years.
