Bond: Ultimate Edition DVDs

For all those people that waited patiently, here's your chance to get the entire collection as best as they'll ever be on regular DVD. When I converted that price listed on Amazon.co.uk's website, the U.S. total was $541.

Quote:
The James Bond 007 'Ultimate Edition' DVDs are now available to pre-order from amazon.co.uk. The 'Limited Edition Attache Case' box set, due for release on 17 July, is currently discounted to a price of £209.99. Amazon features the same box set image that CBn previously revealed last week.

What is especially interesting to note is that amazon lists the box set as containing 40 discs total (each Bond film being a 2-disc DVD release). Restored with a "breakthrough digital process" by Lowry Digital, both picture and sound will be greatly improved. They will all feature DTS 5.1 surround sound, and each will feature loads of new extras including "never before seen footage" and "Top Secret Files" on "The Bond Women" and "Exotic Locations." In addition, former 007 Sir Roger Moore has recorded audio commentaries for all of his seven James Bond films.

For fans only searching for a few select Bond films, each new 007 DVD can be pre-ordered seperately from amazon.co.uk as well (view the entire list here). They can each be pre-ordered for a discounted price of £12.74 and will be released on the same day as the boxed set.
No official word yet on the US release.

Time to quickly sell my old DVD versions on Ebay.
Eh. No thanks. I'll wait until HD/Blu-Ray gets sorted out before I re-buy the Bond films.
Oh, if only I wasn't poor.

And if only they sold them individually, I can't find From Russia with Love anywhere, the only ones they seem to sell individually here are Dr. No, Goldfinger, License to Kill, and the Brosnan ones.
I've already laid down $300 on Bond. I can wait a while. There's always another edition these days.
I've only got a few of them on dvd, Licence To Kill, The Living Daylights, Octopussy, For Your Eyes Only, and Goldeneye. I'll spring for the collection, when I have the cash. Nice to know that I don't have to waste a whole bunch of money on the oop one's that are out there online.
Uh, $541 + what I assume will be massive ass-raping shippage + VAT tax and all of that to the US of A, and you're looking at bankruptcy. Unless you're Robert Evans' illegitimate spawn.

I think we should expect another US-centric announcement after the DVD release of CASINO ROYALE, considering I have this sneaky feeling Sony is going to try and get us consumers to continue to take massive multiple bites at this Bond Apple. Speaking of which, Sony, where's our FISTFUL OF DOLLARS: SE? And DUCK YOU SUCKER?

But back to Bond, which by all accounts is going to be double-dipped and triple-dipped until the end of time. Really, I think you're just paying for the Attache case. Which you could probably get cheaper outright at your local luggage store.

I have to agree with that.

I certainly wouldn't order this set from the UK, even though I do have a region-free player.

I would prefer my Bonds work on all Region 1 players.

The only films I have now is the first set that was released about 5 or more years ago. It includes Goldfinger, Thunderball, Live & Let Die, For Your Eyes Only, Licence to Kill, Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Dies. I also have The World is Not Enough separately. I never had the time or the money to invest in any more, as MGM put the original sets OOP and then re-released them in a different order in an effort to force customers who wished to purchase the whole sets to double-dip. I didn't fall for that.
I still don't own any 007 on DVD. So I might just check this set out.
The big news on these for me is the restoration by Lowry Digital. There are only four or five of the Bond films I actually really like, and I'd really only consider double-dipping on From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, and OHMSS.

The Current DVDs are great in the extras department, but there is room for improvement on the visual side. There are plenty of movies from that era that look great fully restored and if they can get the older Bonds up to par then I'd definitely pick them up.

That's been in the works for some time. I think Lowry even did an interview about it when the STAR WARS films hit DVD. Also of note is that the older films are getting new 5.1 tracks. And if all goes well, some of the previously botched releases (like OHMSS, which is missing a couple minutes of footage) will be fixed.

I think all of the current DVDs are great in the extras department, except maybe GOLDENEYE, TOMORROW NEVER DIES and THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH. Those are the only three that don't have a full-blown "Inside..." documentary. So, since picture and sound quality are the primary reasons to re-buy these films yet again, I'm waiting for HD/Blu-Ray.

Goldeneye didn't have one of the documentaries narrated by Patrick Macnee, but it did have the 40-45 min. TV special hosted by Elizabeth Hurley that highlighted many of the various aspects of the Bond canon.
Yeah, but that wasn't specifically about the flick, like the Inside... ones, which are awesome. It was essentially a TV special created to mark the release of GOLDENEYE, I remember because I saw it on TV when it first aired in 1995.

I did too. I have to agree that the other DVD docus were awesome and a Bond lover's dream come true.

Something tells me they'll want to make money both in Europe and here.

My thought's exactly. Expect a region 1 release date soon. At least now I'll be able to have all of the movies, instead of the few I was able to attain before they went oop, and rose to astronomical prices.

I wouldn't be surprised if a U.S. release for these DVDs is announced when Sony relaunches the James Bond official website on May 19th.

Does anyone know if we'll lose some of the cool features that were on the previous DVD set?

I don't know for sure, but studios are notorious for double and triple-dipping certain titles just for picture/sound upgrades or new deleted scenes.

I'm thinking the movies will be on the first discs with new digitally restored picture and sound and the second disc will be all the special features.

If Sony/Columbia scraps the insanely good documentaries that are on the original 18 Bond DVDs, they are retarded.

Not sure what you mean by "original 18." The in-depth "Inside..." documentaries appear on all Bond DVDs from DR. NO (#1) through LICENCE TO KILL (#16), and then return with DIE ANOTHER DAY (#20).

GOLDENEYE has a promo-fluff-ish TV special. TOMORROW NEVER DIES (which has an even more generic TV special) and THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH only have short interactive featurettes. If anything, it would be great if Sony/EON commissioned "Inside..." documentaries for those three to complete the series.

James Bond 007: License to Mac

Story

Quote:
James Bond 007: Licensed to Mac

By Jonny Evans

Macs have been instrumental in breathing new life into classic English spy James Bond.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the July 17 release of the James Bond Ultimate Edition DVD Collection - and this time the infamous secret service spy isn't just licensed to kill, he's also licensed to Mac.

Unseen footage, better quality with 5:1 surround

The collection - which took over two and a half years to put together - includes digitally enhanced versions of all the James Bond movies; sound and images look sharper and sound better than ever before thanks to new 5:1 surround sound.

All twenty James Bond movies are available as part of this collection, from 1962's 'Dr No' to 2002's 'Die Another Day'.

The videos also offer a vast range of meticulously researched archive material, including host of never-before-seen interviews and on-set footage.

There's even a rarely seen clip showing the riot that took place in Soho outside the premiere of the first ever film, during which a police officer was knocked through a glass window.

The bonus footage was assembled by Ian Fleming Foundation founder and world-renowned Bond expert John Cork, who explains: "We found interviews that have never been seen since they were first broadcast, of all five Bonds," adding: "We even found footage of Roger Moore playing Bond in a 1964 TV skit!"

Reliable Macs rule the roost

For Mac users, the story grows even more interesting, as the images and sound were remastered by DTS Digital Images (once Lowry Digital Images) using a huge installation of 600 Power Mac G5s.

The project needed that kind of horsepower, explained DTS Images vice president of strategy and marketing, Mike Inchalik, who stressed: "Certainly, the Mac is the only computer that's touched this project."

Inchalik, who used PCs extensively in his previous career at Eastman Kodak, stressed that his company is very happy with how reliable Macs are: "Historically, when I joined the company it had about 200 Power Mac G4s. It was refreshing how reliable they were," he explained.

Fan failure turned out to be the biggest technical problem in the G4's, he said, adding, "with the Power Mac G5 we have six fans. It's a different world, but we are still thrilled with how reliable they are."

Amazing stats

Reliability matters: DTS had to check an astonishing 42-miles of film as part of the project. The company had to digitally remove a mind-boggling 37 million pieces of dirt and 74,000 hairs before it even began to touch-up the colour, so that even the oldest Bond movies now look as fresh as if they had been made this year.

The company deployed 700 Terabytes of storage to support the project. Company founder John Lowry explained: "This is true frame-by-frame digital restoration. When you have 42 miles of film, there's a lot to clean up."

The project team also worked to a higher resolution than DVDs support, offering a route forward to release the digitised classics on other formats in future. The film was scanned at a resolution of 4,000 x 3,000 pixels, in contrast with the 720 x
576 pixel resolution of DVDs. This meant that each frame of each movie weighed in at 45MB.

How do they do it?

Lowry explained the laborious, time-intensive process: "We use information from many frames to create each new image. The grain noise is random from one image to the next, but we correlate the picture elements from frame to frame so we reduce the noise while extracting the finest detail from the images."

This reduces movie grain to a consistent level across the movie, making for a sharper image in the digitally restored film.

Inchalik (who led the team that designed Kodak's very first digital film scanner in the 1970s), explained why his company chose Macs - and cost of ownership is critical.

"Apple is our defacto solution," he said. "Costs of ownership include repair, power and heat demands. Power is a big issue for us, as we are based in South California. We basically look at how many gigaflops of computing performance we get per operating dollar."

Apple needs to remain focused on the same matter to retain these large-scale Mac deployments, he warned: "Power Mac G5s remain at the top of that heap, but it may not be easy for them to stay there," he said.

iPod enhancements are possible

He also hinted that the kind of technology DTS uses to enhance movies for better-quality DVDs and HD output could also be used to serve the emerging portable video industry.

"It's interesting. On the one hand the industry is looking at how it can ensure the highest quality viewing experience on new formats like HD, but it is also looking at delivering the best possible experience on small screens - iPods and mobile phones, for example, which is a whole different game," he observed.

"There are things we can do to make for a better quality viewing experience on iPods," he said.

Aside from a really shitty release format, the previous DVDs were pretty stacked. If anything, I'm hoping they do a better job with the Brosnan DVDs. Except Die Another Day, whch doesn't deserve it, those discs are pretty scarce for non-EPK content.

The UK covers for this set are complete ass. The extras look to be top notch but the covers look cheap, cheap, cheap. I'm hoping for a change, but I'm not optimistic. Also, the Brosnan films, again, look to be short on meaty extras, which is a disappointment. Roger Moore did commentaries for all his films though, which really should be interesting.

That's really frickin' weird how you seamlessly branched them together.

Thanks for honoring my previous thread and integrating them.

I don't think the story I linked to says how long they've been cleaning up these movies, but I thought it was really impressive that they scanned them in at a higher resolution for the possibility of putting them on better formats.

1 frame = 45MB? That's ridiculous!

So what are the differences in Goldeneye Uncut and Tomorrow Never Dies Uncut? Why are only those 2 uncut?
Thread Starter
Here's the answer...

Quote:
GoldenEye: UNCUT / 15 (Previously 12) As collected on the IMDb, GoldenEye has had an interesting history with the censors on both sides of the Atlantic. The headbutts featured during the battles between Xenia Onatopp and James Bond, as well as Bond and Alec Trevelyan had all been removed for the UK release. The US release (which features a PG-13 rating) reportedly trims down the shooting of Trevelyan during the pre-title sequence, the scene of the attack on Severnaya by Xenia, as well as her own death.

Tomorrow Never Dies: UNCUT / 15 (Previously 12) Originally carrying a '12' certificate when first released in 1997, the IMDb reports that some footage (roughly six seconds worth), which included the throwing stars on the Stealth Ship, as well as Bond hitting a man's face with his boot, were cut to qualify for the rating.

Here's the complete rundown of special features on each disc. It looks like they ported most of the older special features and the main reason to double-dip is for the all-new digital picture and sound.

Wait... it's Die Another Die didn't make the cut, though it should've based on the extreme shittiness of the film.

Based on the screencaps of the menus, it looks like Sony has scrapped the supremely cool menus that 1K Studios designed for the original releases. Each one was unique and that's what I liked best about them. Perhaps they designed these new menus as well, but considering how similar they look, it's doubtful.

It's also too bad they couldn't get Connery, Lazenby, Dalton and Brosnan to record commentaries for their respective BOND features, since Roger Moore did for his.

As for the GoldenEye and TND cuts, same happens with every region 2 DVD whose original master came from Germany. For those who doesn't know it, the british and german censorship are so strong that they carry a legend of butchering movies in order to make them qualify for a proper rating. Case in point their legendary "cuts" of RoboCop, The Last Boyscout or Eraser who could put to shame these infamous airline edits, or those Bond flicks to which you can add For Your Eyes Only without the car pushed over the cliff or Licence to Kill without the Krest exploding shot among others.

That's why most of us hope the new editions will correct that as well as some other "blunders" like adding an OV track to the spanish edition of OHMSS or that "this never happened to the other fella" line that after endless reruns on TV, inexplicably ended up in the MGM DVD dept. cutting room floor.

* PS: After all these years owning the Bond collection -seriously, Licence to Kill was my first DVD ever, now I own over 1000- I am curious to know if just like what happened here in Spain, MGM/ Fox DVD in other countries launched all titles but The Living Daylights to be sold separately in order to "inspire" the subsequent purchase of the metal case with all 20. That fucking policy, as well as a few unsuccesful ventures to the Megastore with a cutter hidden in my sleeve, were the reason it took me 2 years to get that last disc.

The UK ROBOCOP was never any different than the American R-rated version.

Ouch... my bad... Really? Well, the german was and a friend of mine (half-german, BTW) and I watched it and it was a such a mess it wasn't even funny. We even calculated it was a good 5-10 minutes shorter.

I mean, how do you get away with removing practically all of the Robo stabbing Boddicker scene?

Since these are being touted as "ultimate" editions, is there anything missing on these sets from previous releases? The only big one I can spot is the INSIDE DIE ANOTHER DAY documentary. Seems kind of strange to leave anything out at this point.

And yeah, the new menus are fairly weak compared to the originals, which were stylish and fun. But then again, the packaging sucks (again), so it's still not quite an all-around home run.

I'm hearing that the restorations look pretty great, but I don't want to have to buy every set to get the few 007 movies I actually like. Does anyone know when or if these movies will become available separately in the U.S.?

The Sam Neil audition clip is apparently gone from new THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS disc so you may want to hold on to your original (I know I am).

An inside source I know (Cubby Broccolli's grandaughter) told me that there are plans to eventually release them individually in 2007 but she doesn't know when (I'm guessing no sooner than Q2). I think the studio's gonna try and milk it for all it's worth.

You can get these for under $50 a set - that's less than $10 per movie, not to mention, each movie is a double-disc set with awesome A/V, and an ass-load of extras. When have you paid less than $10 for a loaded special edition dvd with newly restored video and DTS audio?

And on top of that, it's friggin' James Bond - it's sorta like pizza or ice cream: It's great and everybody loves it, and even when it's "bad", it's still pretty good!

Not for me. Maybe I'm too much of a Fleming nerd, but I find the Bond movies I don't like to be beyond bad and often absolutely atrocious. The ones I like, I love - but I just don't care to own movies I don't like, even if I can get them for cheap. Call me crazy.

Good to know. Thanks. I can wait.

I wouldn't be surprised if they release them individually when Casino Royale arrives on DVD.

I was going to hold out for individual releases but I just couldn't wait. And anyhow when you do the math, the money per disc is actually pretty good.. Sadly yes, you do get stuck with gems like man with the golden gun and license to kill, but since the films are in those lovely thin cases- at least they won't take up a lot of room on my shelves.
