The Original Trilogy DVD Release... CONFIRMED!

"In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release attractively priced individual two-disc releases of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Each release includes the 2004 digitally remastered version of the movie, as well as the original theatrical edition of the film. That means you'll be able to enjoy Star Wars as it first appeared in 1977, Empire in 1980, and Jedi in 1983.

See the title crawl to Star Wars before it was known as Episode IV; see the pioneering, if dated, motion control model work on the attack on the Death Star; groove to Lapti Nek or the Ewok Celebration song like you did when you were a kid; and yes, see Han Solo shoot first."

YAY!

And because George Lucas can make money selling this version now then say he's only going to release the enhanced version on Bluray and then do the exact same thing again ... Do you really need to own like 2 copies of all these movies on every different kind of media. Imagine if you had the 3 VHS versions, the LaserDisc version, the two DVD versions, and two Bluray or HD-DVD versions ... plus the 3 prequel dvd's and 3 prequel Blurays ... that's like 30 Star Wars movies you would own!

Hell. FUCKING. YES.

Whoah. Completely unbelieveable...I am very surprised (yet not). I truly believed that old GL would never do it - but then again he IS making a lot less money this year than he did last year. I hate that I will walk into a store and buy another SW dvd set, but I think I will. Curious about those old effects after being cleaned up for dvd.

Lapti Nek!
Considering that the Original Editions probably won't be on Blu-Ray for at least five years, I don't mind buying this upcoming set at all to hold me over until then. I guess that's easier for me to say since I refused to buy the previous SE/DVD editions, so this will be the first time I actually buy any of the STAR WARS films on DVD.

Since these discs will only have 2.0 for the Original Editions (as well as the A NEW HOPE-less opening crawl), I wonder what master they're using and if they'll be doing at least minimal clean-up. I mean, some of the bootlegs out there have 5.1 tracks. And fan-based restorations like the X0 Project have been slavishly working on these films frame-by-frame. I'm glad LFL is finally releasing these but I wonder just how rough the transfers are going to be. I mean, when the official announcement itself refers to the "pioneering, if dated" effects in the film, I have to wonder how much (or little) TLC these discs are going to get.

Not complaining, mind you. Just wondering.
I am going to have to get this aren't I? George Lucas has me by the balls I swear.

The doc on the last DVD had the pre-ANH crawl, and the transfer looked pretty damn good, IIRC.
I don't think George will release anything that doesn't at least look pretty on the eyes. I bet there's some cleaning up done to the original master. Here's hoping for a 5.1 mix of the original soundtrack as well.

Not nearly original, but should still give us something closer to what we've been wanting for a while now.
Well, this is officially the very first double-dip to really bother me.

The Ultimate laserdisc set's transfer looked mighty good, if I remember correctly. Based on that alone, I think these will be decent, at least. Bothered by the 2.0 thing, though. I'm glad it's an option, but they could have at least went 5.1 as well.
Man. It just won't end for the Star Wars fans, will it? But this and next it'll be Star Wars in 3D, then in smell-o-vision, then with the cast digitally replaced with kittens. I'll wait for that one.

Yes. But, then, I've been comfortable with that fact for some time now.

I'll gladly swap my current set out for these. Keeping the 4th disc, though.
Someone in my family will by me this even though I've told them I am done collecting Star Wars merch. They can't help it, so I just take it and do with it what I will. Keeping this set if it comes my way.
Now let's just hope they use some vintage artwork for the packaging.
I am very happy with the Original Trilogy on DVD, finally! Double dipping these movies never bugged. Last set I owned of the originals are on VHS tapes, so no complaints here. Considering 5.1 didn't exist back in '77 - '83, I am cool with this set being 2.0
post #16 of 347
Finally. A legitimate reason to buy a Star Wars DVD.
Man, I am so happy I can buy this for the THIRD TIME.

I'm more excited about this than I thought I would be. This... is really tremendous news.

I can barely remember the original versions at this point. I mean, what's it like watching them? Are the effects distractingly ropey now?

I personally can't wait to see Jabba's palace again without that horrendous musical number.
It still has a horrendous musical number, it's just made of latex instead of polygons.
Whatever, as long as it's not that musical number.

Agreed. They should go totally retro for these. I mean, the purist in me would probably want the standard A-sheet keyart for each one but I also wouldn't mind the STAR WARS D-Sheet ("Circus Poster"), the 1982 EMPIRE re-release art, and the 1982 REVENGE art, respectively.

Not to dig up this old argument again but I'll take "Lapti Nek" over "Jedi Rocks" any day of the week. At the very least, "Lapti Nek" is shorter than "Jedi Rocks."
Oh, I'm not saying Jedi Rocks doesn't suck more than Lapti Nek. It sucks real bad.

I just think Lapti Nek sucks as well.
The SE musical number is many orders of magnitude worse than the original version.

I'm pretty damn happy I didn't buy the release that's on DVD right now. Almost did a couple of times, but something in the back of my head told me not to. My VHS copies are starting to wear out, so it'll be nice to have these on DVD. How long ago was that when they came out on VHS, '93? Plus, it'll be nice to watch in widescreen....

Can't wait for this.
I was about to post that.

The irony being the number of fan-made shirts saying "Han Shot First" way before this as a protest of the SEs.
I'm not a big Star Wars fan, but I did buy trilogy in 2004, and now if I decide to buy the original releases, I'm going to get the same damn extended cuts with them that I already have. Fucking Lucas and his fucking money grubbing, didn't he say he was never going to release the originals as they were before the tweaking? They should just release them as single releases, but they'll probably do that later after these releases sell out to all of the collectors.

Yeah, that's why we're celebrating, dude.
The only thing that prevented me from buying the DVD's before is being corrected. Thank you, I'm satisfied.

PS Sorry bout starting that thread in Main forum, didn't see it over here.
Oh come on.

Did anyone seriously believe these would never see an official DVD release? Lucas is an enormous, crazy whore for money. Of course he's going to put these on plastic and sell them yet again.

I wasn't sure if they were or not. I'm just happy they finally are.

Is that okay?
I honestly didn't see it coming.

Other ideas for T-shirts

-Luke Didn't Scream
-Boba Fett Ain't Kiwi
-Bring Vader's Shuttle
-Yes, My Monkey Woman Master
Yeah, Charlie, it's okay. But if this comes as a shock to people, they've been living in a fool's paradise.
I figured it would happen eventually, but I thought they would be released whenever the Star Wars TV show came on the scene.

I've been saying that about Lucas Apologists for years. Nice to finally have conclusive proof.

OK, so when is that Holiday Special coming then?

Outside of a complete niche market of geeks, there's no consumer demand for the crappy Holiday Special. There is, however, a consumer demand for the unaltered cuts of the Original Trilogy, because even Star Wars laymen didn't like the changes that were made to the new editions. And where there's consumer demand, there will be Lucas, because this is the sort of thing he does best.

Nerds of the world can really make a difference! Hooray!

I'll definitely be picking up STAR WARS (strange calling it by this name) and EMPIRE. Dunno about JEDI.
