The Original Trilogy DVD Release... CONFIRMED! - Page 2

Hey I wonder if there's any hope that he'll ever release of a version of the Prequels that doesn't suck!
Someone just HAD to bash the prequels, didn't they?
all I have to say is the first HD release better have both versions
post #54 of 347
Ladies and Gentlemen...my summary of this thread....

"So he released it like we asked....lets celebrate.....wait this is George Lucas....he's a prick! He must have been planning this all along.

I'll buy it and have sex with it though...

Oh and the prequels suck!"

Thank you, Thank you. I'll be here till Millette puts me back in the basement.

I knew it'd be coming, but I theorized we'd see his kids do it after he shuffled off this mortal coil. Wanna bet this timing is because he's concerned DVD will be an 8-track in the near future, and he better get the last of his dipping done on this format? George, you greedy motherfucker.
dvd = 8 track

judging by peoples experiance with the Toshiba player I wouldnt be saying that
post #59 of 347
I wish this had happened before I was turned off the whole series.

Not saying I agree with it, I just was wondering if technology worshipper Lucas is thinking it.

I think alot of people feel the same way. He should have done this a while back.

I'm glad I got the Special Editions for free.

I'm able to separate all the films in their own subworld, which is why JEDI didn't turn me off to either STAR WARS or EMPIRE.

George Lucas is a genius, and he is a cynical one.

At least by this point he is, after every possible bit of goodwill and good feeling that millions associated with the original films he made has been drained in the pursuit of money. It may not be greed, it could be just a desire to build new cameras or studios or even a new movie with the money he's making, it could be you know, a special villa for his kids or maybe his own wine. Does it matter? It doesn't matter. Hallelujah, Jesus fucking Joseph and Mary. He's free to do whatever he wants.

Wait--he already has his own wine, Skywalker Ranch Merlot.

I'm won't buy them, it's just exciting because for the last ten years I thought that the originals were going to be hard to find and somewhat lost, which always made me sad.

So, um, to speak as a geek: the Special Editions were like Darth Maul, the prequels were like the Separatists, and this here would be the saving of Republic by the Jedi. The Clones would be the TV series. The analogy works completely in that one man profits.

I don't really care either way. I like the originals, but not nearly as much as I did 10 years ago.
Naturally this crowd is prone to getting very excited over this sort of thing, but I wonder how much Joe Public will care? Surely he figures he already bought the new and improved versions.

Personally, I don't think any film or series can hold up to this much scrutiny and nit-picking. I have purposely avoided all things Star Wars since SITH's release. I will continue to do that until September (*pats self on back*).
I'm pretty darned glad that this is happening, as I'm still watching the trilogy on VHS as of now. I saw Star Wars (the fancy pants re-release) in the theater in 1997, and I found all the new bells and whistles to be just endlessly distracting. Instead of just watching the movie I was trying to puzzle out what was new and which scenes had been changed or elided.

So this will be really nice. I still really like the three Star Wars movies, and it'll be fun to see them on DVD (especially in widescreen, that'll be a huge difference).
Finally. I was expecting they'd release these next year when Star Wars turns 30. It looks like we'll be getting HD-DVD/Blu-ray versions of the current DVD releases then instead.

This news will make my girlfriend's day. She detests the changes made over the years even more than I do. It'll be nice to watch the films on something else than shoddy VHS.

Now here's hoping I can afford them.
I never had any doubt that these would see official DVD. Looks as though it's time to sell my eBay bootlegs.
Part of me always thought that Lucas would release it, I just didn't expect it to be so soon.

I don't hate the special editions the way alot in here do, however I wasn't thrilled with some aspects of it. I liked the added scene between the Emperor and Vader in EBS but hated Jedi rocks in ROTJ. I can't even begin to express my joy at seeing Han shoot first again.....that was probably the one thing I hated the most about the special editions.

I bought the DVD set mostly for the Empire of Dreams doc.....I have no problem double dipping for this set
post #71 of 347
I wonder if they ever going to release the 6 films back to back with aditional material. I`m surprised this hasn`t been done considering how Lucas is anal about such things, how it would tell the whole story, etc...
I'm going to wait for these to come out as extras on the High Def 2004 editions (or whatever they are by that point). I prefer the 2004 editions over all the previous versions.

I am glad that a lot of you people who wanted these badly are finally getting them though. By golly, you deserve them!

That's very kind of you. Although I'm wondering how much they'll cost, given that the originals are only being sold in sets with the 2004 release, which I've never seen, but also have no desire to. But still, it'll be fun to A/B them, the better to revel in the fact that the originals are being released.

And between this thread and Richard Dickson's Empire thread of last week, that's two Star Wars threads here in a row that are comprised primarily of reasoned and pacific discussion. Go chewers!!!
When they re-released the 2004 editions last Christmas, I usually saw them for around $40.00 I would expect them to run at about that or cheaper, unless they go crazy with promotion. But that's just a guess.
I'm happy these editions will be released. Just hoping they look (and sound) as good as possible.
I hope that my dislike of the prequels does not affect my love for the OT. Anyway, that is pretty good news!
The only thing that excites me about this, is that it means I can show the original versions to my nephew in a year or two. Hopefully in HD, but if it took this long for these, that may be unlikely.

I'm sure your nephew will really appreciate that.
While I don't think Lucas was visited by three ghosts and woke up deciding to fill fanboys' hearts with joy by doing this, it's not like he's desperate for cash either.
I don't know, have you seen gas prices these days?

Since these discs will only have 2.0 for the Original Editions (as well as the A NEW HOPE-less opening crawl), I wonder what master they're using and if they'll be doing at least minimal clean-up. I mean, some of the bootlegs out there have 5.1 tracks. And fan-based restorations like the X0 Project have been slavishly working on these films frame-by-frame. I'm glad LFL is finally releasing these but I wonder just how rough the transfers are going to be. I mean, when the official announcement itself refers to the "pioneering, if dated" effects in the film, I have to wonder how much (or little) TLC these discs are going to get.

Not complaining, mind you. Just wondering.
As there isn't that much difference between the originals and the SE's regarding the bulk of the film, wouldn't they only have about 5-7% of the movie left to restore, tops?

Meh. It's probably more like brainwashing. He'll be the only one in his class to only know the original versions, leading to merciless taunting and beatings.
It feels desperate to me, though. Like he knows so many fans were turned off by the prequels that he's got to get 'em back any way he can.
Yeah, he's probably sitting around feeling like a failure right now.
I'm sure he's not too worried considering the films already made probably a billion overall in ticket sales. Add to that that there are a whole bunch out there that - shock horror - don't hate the prequels, I don't think he really cares that much that a small subsection of Star Wars fans are maybe unhappy, especially since the ones who are happy are still buying toys/books/games/etc up the wazoo.

I'm not calling him a bastard for releasing these. I'll probably buy them, seeing as I didn't buy the reworked editions or the prequels.

I'm just saying I didn't believe for a second that his commitment to the fidelity of his "artistic vision" was going to keep him from releasing these, when people were bound to snap them up.

He is a calculating whore, but he's also a enormously arrogant and selfish about Star Wars. I wasn't sure which side would win, and had resigned myself to watching my carefully protected DVD bootlegs of the Laserdisc edition.

I'm happy they're coming out, but it brings back twinges of the original betrayals.
Selfish?
Oh man, fuck this shit in the ass. I ain't buying until there's six movies in a box.

The best thing for this situation would have been like the ALIEN tetralogy: each film contains the theatrical and director's cut. And seriously, did those mere minutes of change fuck those two classics up SO badly that you didn't want to buy/see them anymore? Must have been worse movies than I thought.
Betrayals?

They're his movies. He can do what he wants with them. Like it or not, all you are, and all anyone else is, is a fan and a consumer.

My sentiments as well.

Holy shit... I didn't see this one coming. I knew Lucas was shrewd, but come on! It's now confirmed.

Lucas is a blood sucking vampire.

What was the point of the reworked editions, again?

Lucas realising that his trilogy of kids movies were being largely neglected by modern children due to their cumbersome effects and making an effort to introduce the younger generation to his series.

Or you could take the view that he deliberatley set out to rape every fanboys childhood.
And I could sure do without Ben Burtt's annoying sound effects drowning out the death star attack score.
If you decide not to buy this, people from the Ranch will knock down your door in the middle of the night and make you "disappear". Or so it seems.

Personally, I'll wait for the inevitable 30th anniversary six movie mega-boxset
post #99 of 347
Perhaps I'm underestimating youth, but I can't imagine a kid under the age of 8 (unprompted) being distracted by the effects on the OT. Kids are full of imagination, it's only after they grow up and spend 21 hours a day on the internet under the handle OMFGMTRXROX that they mutate into know-it-all mouthoffs.

If KONG, 7th VOYAGE, and other classic effects films can stand the test of time unaltered, so can STAR WARS.

If you know a child in this CGI dominated world who would sit down and watch old Harryhausen flicks then I feel you must have hit a commune run by filmic scholars. The difference in effects nowadays is so immense that even children can see the inherent shitiness of the old models.
