I've been waiting for this to hit DVD for a good two years now. Just a wonderously silly show that no one else seemed to watch. I hope that this spurs more people onto seeing what was perhaps one of the funniest things on TV in 2003.

Brilliant. Darkplace is awesome. Darkplace and the Mighty Boosh are my two favourite shows at the moment. Both of course being fairly unknown. Just downloaded first ep of boosh second season.

My problem with Darkplace is that it was just too silly. The episode with the "Scotch Mist" is a prime example. There's plenty of room for parody in shitty horror (especially shitty British horror) that the show nails with fantastic accuracy. Anybody who's seen Rawhead Rex, Xtro or Dream Demon will recognise the uniquely awful qualities of po-faced 80s Brit horror straight away.

The more obvious silly stuff just detracts from that.

To use a comparison, the reason Look Around You works so well is that the surreal stuff is played straight. It doesn't feel like jokes layered on top of a spoof. It just feels like a spoof.

I enjoyed the first ten minutes of the first episode. Then it dawned on me that the same joke was being repeated endlessly with different knobs on.

TBH I felt a bit annoyed. There was a lot of potential for some good referential humour that seemed harder to get wrong that right.

It had deadly flying forks and spoons, as such it removed my ability to think in any critical sense about it. Also Garth turning up at a zombified colleauges funeral with an M-16 to finish the job once and for all was utterly awesome.

Yeah, this show was geektastic and I defy anyone who enjoyed Shaun of the Dead to not enjoy this....

Not quite: The Sci Fi Channel has picked up the show, and will be airing it starting July 27; additionally, they'll be sneaking the first episode on their website July 13, and they claim that online response to it will help determine whether they decide to bankroll future episodes...

Very cool, but that other show sounds interesting too.

My brothers bought me the DVD for my birthday. While I agree to some extent with Geoff's comments, I feel the whole series redeemed itself with Dean Learner's rap on the final episode's title song "One Track Lover (Down a Two-Way Lane)".

Plus, the commentary tracks on the DVD (Marenghi, Learner, Sanchez, in character) get progressively more hilarious as they get drunker. Oh, and Alice Lowe is hot.

Had no idea this was available. I'm in!

I agree with Dan. I started recording the episodes on SciFi and found myself fast-forwarding through some of the parts, because I'd already seen similar things before in previous episodes. The episode where the nurse gets the psychic powers was probably my favorite, though.

Finally decided to buy it on DVD - I liked it a lot even though some of you guys are totally right about the repetitious nature of many jokes (inconsistent sound etc). But is it me or the scenes where self proclaimed dream-weaver Marenghi tells about his own masterpiece look very much like a parody of Friedkin's introductions to his own films? I mean, they even look very much alike.

This one is definitely for the Python and SOTD enthusiasts. Do yourselves a favour and check it out if you haven't already. Link to the first episode: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNfQ0ORwSDM
