Bioshock

So, yeah, PC games certainly are becoming more and more the red-headed stepchildren of the video-gaming realm. At least all the E3 coverage would seem to imply that.

So here's something that's probably being missed somewhat in the gaming world, but the makers of System Shock 2 have a new game coming soon for PC, and it sounds pretty damn good:

Quote:
LOS ANGELES--As enormous fans of the open-ended gameplay and unsurpassed atmosphere of the 1999 Irrational first-person RPG System Shock 2, we were floored to finally see Irrational's next game, BioShock, in action. Irrational's general manager Ken Levine was kind enough to give us our first look at the game itself at E3 today, and we were frankly thrilled to find that the dynamic gameplay possibilities and outright creepiness of Shock 2 will almost certainly be equaled (if not surpassed) in BioShock. In short, if you liked Shock 2, you're going to love this. Our updated impressions, with new notes, are below. Please be advised that this preview may contain minor spoilers.

I picked up a magazine a few months ago that had a spread on this, and it looks and sounds really great. The fact that it's a horror-ish first-person RPG by Irrational would be enough for a day-one purchase for me, but the actual details really sweeten the deal. Something about the "spiritual successor to SS2" line that's everywhere rubs me wrong a little, and I can't figure out why, but damn... it's going to be hard to wait. Except for the fact that I still need to finish FEAR, OBLIVION, and pick up CTHULU & SIN 2. Plus HL2: AFTERMATH and an OBLIVION expansion will probably be available before BIOSHOCK. And I only game about 4 hours a week anymore. But anyway.

It looks gorgeous. And it's also coming for the 360.

Game Informer covered this game a couple of months ago. It looks unbelievable and I've been wanting to hear more about it, it seems like its been in the shadows behind games like Gears of War and Splinter Cell.

Do they have a release date yet?
Yep, I'm all over this one as well. I always wonder if people who sing the praises of games like Metroid Prime ever even played games like System Shock 1 or 2.

I've always sung the praises of the last two Metroids, they are phenomenal games, but I also totally understand the brilliance of SS2. Not sure what they have to do with each other besides being FPS's. There are layers of horrific and emotional content in SS2 has that MP 1 and 2 both lack, but no one I've ever talked to has even claimed that either MP was an emotional game or caused them to lose sleep at night. The playing styles between the two franchises are totally different as well.

Thank you, Neal. I was going to call Jacob a nasty name and, I don't know, spit on him or something. But you covered that much better. I mean, I know you're the resident older gent on the boards, Singer, but do you really find it necessary to just shit on a game because it's not an old classic you liked? I mean, I reinstalled SS2 2 weeks ago after reading about Bioshock, just to get the taste back in my mouth and I proudly own (stupid Win XP not wanting me to play my old DOS games) SS 1, but I still dig the hell out of Prime. Liking one and reccommending it doesn't prevent me from doing the same to the other. Sorry, man. I just find this perceived opinion to be the opposite of people who only play the newest games and hate older stuff because of bad graphics or whatever. Fuckers don't comprehend gameplay and setting...
Meant no offense guys, I just find games like Prime lacking, big time. Sue me.

And I'm well aware I'm in the minority. At any rate, didn't mean to derail.
You know, the more I think about it, I realize it was kind of a stupid thing to say. Carry on.
This month, in spanish magazine Micromania there“s an article about Bioshock and it looks absolutely gorgeus. The release date is 2007.
It's very cool. The sense of place is really concrete and impresseive -- they've done a Deus Ex level of design work with this one. Based on what I saw it's really hard to tell how the action/exploration balance will work out, but based on SS2 I'm totally on board.
Definitely the game I'm looking forward to the most. The E3 impressions from various outlets increased my expectations even more.
It seems like they've done a much better job of reproducing the feel of Sytem Shock for this sequel than what was done with Deus Ex: Invisible War versus Deus Ex. It really looks and sounds great. I can't wait to play this game with surround sound.

So I'll be getting a sequel to Sytem Shock and to Shadowrun on the Xbox 360. Now, all I need is a sequel to Fallout.

Edit: Yay! I just found this on Gamespot:

Fallout 3: Months prior to the show, Bethesda Softworks said that the third installment of the storied postapocalyptic RPG series would not be on hand at E3. However, that didn't stop the developer-publisher from teasing attendees with a poster, as it did in 2005. This year's one-sheet showed the series' emblematic "Fallout Boy" (called "Action Boy" and "Pip Boy" by some, after the perk and PDA in the game, respectively) superimposed over a faded poster of a happy, 1950s-esque soon-to-be-postnuclear family. "Prepare for the future," read the tagline at the top, further raising expectations of a sequel that crosses the Interplay Fallout games' sly wit and bleak setting with the top-end graphics and free-roaming setting of Bethesda's current bestseller, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Sadly, the sequel to Alone in the Dark is still stupidly set in the present.

For this to be a "spiritual successor" to SS2 it'll need radioactive monkeys.

I really enjoyed System Shock 2; it was just so creepy and atmospheric. There were actually parts of this game where I didn't want to go on, because I didn't want to know what was at the end of that dimly-lit hallway.

I wish they'd do a proper sequel, but EA owns the rights to the series. Recently they registered the name "System Shock 3," so who knows?

No way this is on Xbox 360.

The sound design is unbelievable!

I haven't been keeping up on this game since I was initially unimpressed when it was first introduced. Holy shit have things changed. I'm sold.

More impressive every time I see it. Didn't we have another thread devoted to this as well?

Pretty sure, but I think it got derailed somewhere along the line.

All that footage is from PC, you can tell by how fast the player turns and looks around.

I was recently burned with F.E.A.R. . All the reviews were great and the game looked interesting, so I asked for it on my birthday. It looks like an original Xbox game.

I hope Bioshock will be a better port than that.
I was wrong, apparently Elizabeth, the 2K Games community manager, confirmed that this video was recorded off of the 360 build on the official BioShock forums. And they've been co-developing it for both platforms, with dedicated teams for each, so neither is a port of the other, code-wise.
You can tell it's from the 360 version just from the very stiff-looking player movements.
Then it looks great for 360 game.
So you get Jedi powers if you inject yourself with some kind of juice? That's an interesting reload mechanic.

This game looks awesome.

Elizabeth is my sister-in-law. That is all.

Further creepy/cool Bioshock news. You know about those little girls running around collecting ADAM from corpses? I don't know if it will make the final game, but apparently you can take the ADAM from them by killing them.

How you ask?

By picking them up, gently stroking their hair AND BREAKING THEIR NECK!

Game or not I don't see myself being able to do that.
It would be hard to do, especially if you've seen the video that shows off some really awesome-looking facial animations of one of the cornered girls as you close in on her.
I think that's part of the point...they're trying to make some of the harder choices actually harder emotionally.
This game is one of the reasons I'm scrapping to get a 360. It simply looks like no game I've ever seen before. While the gameplay looks robust, it's the story and the atmosphere that have me entranced.

I think the game looks great, but I have a four-year-old daughter. There's no way I can have a game in my house where you beat up little girls with a monkey wrench.
I'd be overjoyed if Bioshock was nothing but beating up little girls with monkey wrenches. There won't be a kid left alive in that city after my first run-through.
Just to clarify, it's not so much the thought of beating up little girls with monkey wrenches, it's the thought of my daughter waking up in the middle of the night, deciding she wants a drink of water, quietly stepping into the living room, and watching me beat up little girls with monkey wrenches.
I don't remember the game, but I remember choking someone to death as the control vibrated more and more, and when the neck popped the vibrating stopped instantly. It was so creepy/satisfying.

I hope this game does that.

Well you know how to solve that problem: monkey wrench.

Off the top of my head, I want to say, PaRappa?

You actually get more ADAM from killing them than saving them, but there is some some sort of bonus type deal if your finish the game without killing any. The producers are quick to say they aren't little girls, but mutants/robots/whatever... I've seen the videos, those are little girls.
Very interesting looking. Anyone else get an Eternal Darkness vibe?

You won't see the neck breaking. The feature story in the new EGM says you'll see your character grab the Little Sisters and pull them offscreen where you will only hear (and presumably feel) their deaths. And like otis said, there is a cost-benefit factor in that what you choose to do with them will affect later developments in the game.

After reading the EGM story I'm more excited for this game than ever. I think it's going to be great.
The choking/vibrating was MGS2 I'm pretty sure.

Had me at 'breaking little girl's necks'. Looks amazing. Hopefully the story is something worth caring about for at least a few hours, unlike most fps games.

Looks like a pretty damn good late summer/fall for the 360 with at least 4 games (by my count) worthy of purchase at 60 bucks a pop.

You guys are starting to scare me.

What happened to jumping on turtles for coins?

Supposedly you can help turn them back into little girls instead of killing them, but you get less ADAM. Either way, this game is going to be damn nice.

Now if only Mass Effect didn't come out almost right after this.

Yeah, it's far less cruel to turn them back into little girls. "Now run along and enjoy the sunken city filled with mask-wearing psychopaths!"

Also, I don't think Mass Effect is coming out this year. I'm betting it gets pushed back to 2008. What you have to worry about is Halo 3, GTA IV, and Assassin's Creed.
A check of a few online retailers shows a release date of 8/21 for Bioshock and 9/03 for Mass Effect. I wouldn't be surprised either if Mass Effect gets pushed back...but damn, if those dates hold up I'm going to have a tough time with both those two vying for my attention.
Mass Effect has no official release date as yet, that's speculation on the retailers' part. There's nothing to push back...Bioware doesn't announce a release date until they are sure.

That said, it's very, very close to completion.

Well...fuck.
Hey, that doesn't mean it WON'T be 2008, but if it is, I'm going to go find a monkey wrench and go beat up the corpse of Divine.
