APOCALYPSE NOW: The Complete Dossier

From The Digital Bits:

"Also due from (Paramount Studios) on 8/15 is the 2-disc Apocalypse Now: The Complete Dossier, which includes both the original 1979 and the 2001 Redux versions of the film, along with "audio commentaries, rare unseen footage, lost scenes, brand new featurettes, Segments from the Cutting Room Floor, Then & Now retrospectives and more."

No HEARTS OF DARKNESS? Talk about a completely missed opportunity.

Fucking yay! No Hearts Of Darkness does suck, though.

This explains why I waited so many years to buy it.
Now I can (I like both versions very much).

Holy shit you guys are fast.

Cover Art is featured in this weeks' Special Edition, coming up soon.

Additionally, I totally agree with no HEARTS OF DARKNESS. Completely missed opportunity, probably due to rights issues and whatnot. Maybe for the Dossier Secret Kill Kurtz Edition.

Apparently HEARTS OF DARKNESS is currently stuck in drydock as Coppola holds out for some changes (read: censoring) he wants done to it. I don't understand why he's concerned since most people who would double-dip APOCALYPSE NOW are already well-aware of his near-criminal obsessiveness during shooting. That's what makes it such an amazing "Making Of" and it only serves to enrichen the actual film's mystique even more.

I've never really been impressed with Zoetrope's DVD Lab, and that's putting it kindly, so I don't have particularly high expectations for this release. But if I hear enough praise for this new edition, I might pick it up...even if both cuts of the film ars still being presented in their cropped and color-revised form.

But will the Harvey Keitel footage be in there? And why not just add a third disc with the five-hour rough cut that's been so widely bootlegged?

For starters, you would need two discs to hold a five-hour version.

I hope we get to see some Keitel in the new extras. But if even the fearless HEARTS OF DARKNESS couldn't go there, I can't imagine these new featurettes will either.

I don't want to be one of those people, but I don't think I'll be getting this unless HEARTS OF DARKNESS was added. If Coppola wants to change history a la Lucas, I can help to nip this revisionist bullshit in the bud this time.

I liked the opening sequence of dracula. Good music score.

I’m still fuming about Redux’s total lack of extras (Region Two). They could at least have included a couple of interviews. Although I think I prefer this longer cut. The inclusion of the pied noir plantation sequence gives the movie historical depth. Moreover, it eerily illuminates the colonial mindset that Conrad so savagely criticised in his novel.

I'm such an AN nut I'm going to spring for the import of this. HEARTS OF DARKNESS can wait-odds are it'll be released separately, if at all.

Plus, cool artwork.

I'm still debating whether or not to buy this. Saw Redux three years ago on the big screen and was rendered speechless, having never seen it before.

However, I just grabbed the local library's copy of Hearts of Darkness... would it be worth a separate release? Not for the doc's quality - it was outstanding, to say the least - but it seems like it would be a better fit as part of a AN uber-set. Oh well...

Picked this up yesterday for $14. The commentary is exceptional and informative, even if much of it is well known. Older directors can often be boring or dry (looking at you, Friedkin), but Francis keeps it quick and interesting. I think I might watch disc one of the original version (so I don't have to sit through things like the awkward and long rain/playmate sex scene), but then pop in disc two of the Redux Version for the Frenchy stuff, which I find to be eerie and watchable. The colors are astounding on this disc. Yeah, hopefully Hearts of Darkness and the Keitel footage will surface on dvd, but this is still a gorgeous edition.

It's been mentioned a few times that apparantly, HOD isn't on here because of rights issues. I believe even Coppola has said it himself (And I think Moriarty mentioned it in his recent DVD article).

However, there's an odd lack of the 'destruction of the kurtz compund' sequence on here. Despite the fact it made it on to the initial dvd (With a commentary no less). And one thing that should've made it to the redux cut is that monkey sampan scene. When FFC talks about some of the more surreal moments in his original cut you know this is what he was referring to.

As I think about wether or not to buy this, I found Hearts of Darkness on youtube.

I agree completely. In my opinion after watching it yesterday, The Monkey Sampan scene is one of my favorite, if not the favorite scenes from Apocalypse Now, and it was never even included. It is completely terrifying to me. I was thinking that it might've been partially inspired by the ending of AGUIRRE, but who knows. With monkeys everywhere in the Philippines, I'm sure it could've been an organic idea. Either way, monkeys on boats in the jungle is pretty much the best thing evaar.

I bought my Complete Dossier version at Circuit City. It came with a bonus disc that had the destruction sequence with commentary.

I'm going to have to see if I can still get a copy of the Complete Dossier with the bonus disc from circuit city. I also have a vhs copy of Hearts Of Darkness that I got from a Hollywood Video that was selling off all of their vhs in June, so getting this will complete it for me.

That doc is fantastic, it really is a crime that it's not included in the "complete" dossier. I knew a lot of the information in it already, but it was still great. Best film "behind the scenes" doc I've seen, over The Abyss and the Gilliam docs(from Brazil to Quixote). The most interesting film stories are the ones that almost fall apart, it seems(or in Quixote's case, DO fall apart).

You must be very upset that there's no Harrison footage. I think you see the back of his head, for a second.

Dammit, I bought it from Best Buy. I fuckin' hate exclusive add-ons.

I see now how much I've come to rely on The Special Edition.

Awesome. Haven't seen this since it's initial run on Showtime.
