Crimson Tide Unrated and other complaints...

Seriously, what the flying fuck is going on? This movie is perfect. This Unrated shit is getting quite out of hand. Am I alone in thinking this? It seems we're in some new era of ever-changing films: cuts, re-cuts, special editions, unrated editions, extended editions. What are two minutes going to do to this movie?

I have a feeling this is just going to continue to get worse and I'm very concerned. Pretty soon you're going to be pretty much guaranteed to not see the version of a film you saw in a theater ever again. Is it just a trend, or is this to become the standard. Should I just be accepting it?

I could care less about Unrated. The fact that the new disc finally has bonus features, however....

Maybe it's because I haven't had my coffee yet that I'm bitching. I've been waiting for a special edition of the film, a nice presentation is always welcome. But all these changes are beginning to drive me batty. Two minutes is minor compared to other films, though.

I'd buy a special edition if I didn't own any version of the movie.

If I had the "regular" version already the SE would have to have a lot of stuff to make me contemplate buying it again.

Pretty shitty ones, unfortunately. The only reason I picked up this new edition of CRIMSON TIDE was for the (finally) anamorphic transfer. The extras are uniformly weak.

But I agree that this whole "unrated" scam is out of control. But the studios are within their right to do it since they're not calling them "Director's Cuts" and therefore don't need the director's permission to release them. Just goes to show how ethically-challenged marketing people are.

I would have zero problem with it except nobody uses the nifty seamless branching option for DVDs. I've seen quite a few "unrated" cuts that were inferior to the theatrical versions. More times than not, the opposite is true, (especially with horror films that actually would have gone NC-17 due to gore) but I want some choice. Damn greed seems to win out every time though.

"Unrated" is usually stupid, unless it's for violence. While still a bad movie, "King Arthur" was much better as an "extended cut" because it was rated R and the action scenes flowed as they were originally intended.

It's dumb, but I usually just choose not to buy them. I wish they were kept separate as deleted scenes, but there's usually always the option of getting the theatrical cut instead.

I usually don't double-dip, but this one has one big plus - it's the first edition of CT that's been optimized for 16x9. The last one that came out was plain letterboxed, which Disney did in the old days. It's been out a looooooooong time, and it was surely due for a new edition.

I was thinking about this - seeing as how the studios are so pissed off about people downloading stuff for free they should take a moment to reflect and realise they brought a lot of this on themselves with their greed.

I'm afraid to buy a DVD now. I've been wanting to buy King Kong recently, but I don't dare to just in case the "real special" edition comes out. We (the consumers) get screwed constantly...and 99% of these "unrated" versions tend to be a big production over nothing - an extra 10 seconds of the side of some girl's boob, and extra second of blood splatter, or three extra swear words. Hurray.

And just think, with new tech coming down the line? We will all get shafted again and have to re-buy everything.
