What's CHUD's Beef with Patton Oswalt?

Browsing through the CHUD archives today, it's occured to me that whenever a CHUD article references comedian Patton Oswalt, it's always followed by a slam. I don't know if it's a consensus at CHUD or just one staff writer with a grudge, but it seems odd to me. I understand that tastes may vary, but in this age of Dane Cook and Larry the Cable Guy, why go after a genuinely funny and intelligent comic like Oswalt?

And what about everyone else? Is there a substantial No Pattons club here or are the CHUD fellas riding solo on this one?

I don't know what everyone else's problem is with the guy, and can hardly remember reading about him on chud. He's got some jokes that I think are really funny, but in general his personality and shtick are irritating, as is his arrogance/ignorance when talking about politics.

I knocked him before, but I've come around. Funny guy. Forgive me, Mr. Oswalt.

Now you know how we feel.

What a coincidence, Guttenberg. I had a dream last night that I was in a debate where a bunch of ignorant liberals were angry that I upset their myopic world view, because I wasn't a conservative, and because I had a cool headed, well developed ideology to study the science of human action. They were trying to tear the flesh from my bones, and I think I saw a cross eyed water snake among them. You, right?

Man, that's one convoluted dis.

Fer reals. You know how you keep such disses from getting over-blown and bloated? Privatetize them!

You kind of answered your own question by mentioning Dane Cook. Do a search on him on CHUD. He's actually been pushed as funny on this site.

Right, and we have a hive mind here.

I enjoy both of them. Both have moments where they go a bit far (Oswalt in paticular has a tendency to drag out a bit for far longer then it ever should be) but both have a lot of high points as well (Oswalt's "Alabama Ghost Rape" is one of my fav. bits I've heard in awhile and it's hard not to just sit back and enjoy Cook's insane ammount of energy.)

I prefer Cook over Oswalt, but I've certainly laughed at Oswalt. As Dave points out, it's not like everybody here gets together and makes unanimous decisions on what to hate.
I can enjoy a light portion of Oswalt's social commentary while he is on stage. But when he and Brian Posehn, who doesn't make geek-dom funny, just fucking awful, get together, I feel like I'm watching the most un-coordinated mutual masturbation session known to man.

Oswalt and Posehn consider themselves the punk-rockers of stand-up comedy. That's an esteem-crushing slap to the face and a demoralizing 14-inch penile assault on the rectum of punk rock... if I may say so myself.

I'm always feelin' kinda Patton.

Maybe not a hive mind but it's normal for people who think alike to get together.

Zach Galifianakis was much, much funnier to me than Oswalt on Comedians of Comedy. I don't understand the huge praise for Oswalt, but I probably haven't heard enough of him, really.

Brian Posehn doesn't usually do much for me, but he did come up with one great line that I know I've repeated a few times:

"I do think certain kinds of music can make you violent. Like, when I listen to Nickelback, it makes me want to kill Nickelback."

What's CHUD's Beef with Patton Oswalt? He was inappropriate with my daughter, and THE TRUTH WILL BE KNOWN!

Kind of like how all the assholes of Canada live in Montreal?

Now Brad, you know that's a logical fallacy. Saying "All Canadians who live in Montreal are assholes (which is largely true)" is not the same as saying "All Canadians who are assholes live in Montreal." I know for a fact that there's at least one asshole in Calgary.

Yeah, it was silly of me to slam Cook in my original post, since I know how popular he is. I personally think that he substitutes energy for wit, but I should know that it's not a majority opinion.

And Posehn was definitely the weak link of the Comedians of Comedy. Galifianakis was much funnier off stage than on, I thought, but he had his moments. Bamford was alright, and she had one of the biggest laughs of the series for me with the song to remind herself not to do anything inappropriately sexual.

And I don't believe for a second that Oswalt thinks he's a "punk" comic. I think that he's shown himself to be genuinely passionate about stand up comedy and wants it to stay small, fresh, and sharp.

I think Oswalt was kind of arrogant on Comedians of Comedy - on and off stage. And that kind of turned me off him. Galifianakis has such great delivery and timing - guy just works for me. Loved his short-lived talk show on VH1 and I'm looking forward to his new series on Comedy Central. I've liked Cook less and less as I've realized that he aped Brian Regan's delivery. Guy still makes me laugh, however.

The real error was mentioning Cook in the same breath as the awful waste of flesh that is Larry The Cable Guy. Not liking Cook is one thing, and I even think that your assertion that he sometimes subsititutes energy for wit is fair, but there's no way he's on the same level as Larry. Personal preference aside, I actually think Oswalt and Cook are far more comparable and I like them both. However, I also agree with Matchstick - I like Galifianakis more than Oswalt.

But I think that we can all agree on one thing, at least: Larry the Cable Guy is fucking terrible.

For a guy who spends most of his time on these boards slammin people, that was the best you could come up with?

Because really, the majority of Montrealers aren't assholes. I may be one but I'm of the minority,

The words came out of his mouth certainly as implying such. On the Netflix-produced DVD of Comedians of Comedy, Oswalt, backstage, calls David Cross and himself the punk (he might've said "Indie", and pertaining to stand-up the words seem interchangeable) rockers of comedy. I laughed. He's got a slightly out-of-touch self-image. He can rant coherently with a successful payoff now and then, but he's nowhere near Cross' level of skill. And because he makes fun of Bush means he's edgy? We all know what selling yourself as edgy gets you.... just ask Mencia. Wait, is he still on the air? He is? Damn it! Well, if you've ever seen Dwayne Kennedy's act, that's how I view Patton Oswalt.

Bamford's got hilarious ideas, but she often translates them poorly in her act. Perhaps her comedy would work better outside of stand-up.

Oh, there's a lot more then just one...my city is crammed to the gills with assholes but you have to understand that ignorance in Alberta is considered the same as an opinion. Thank you ever so much Ralph Fucking Klein.
