Universal is releasing Miami Vice seasons one and two together for $59.98 just in time for the feature film. The set will street on July 25th. I'd say this sounds like a good time to buy these now since they're pretty much two for the price of one.

I bought Season 1 for about $35. I don't know that I need Season 2 personally, is it decidedly better than the first, or more of the same?

I'd say season 1 is better but not by a large margin. There's some great episodes. The first couple of shows when they go to New York, the one where James Remar plays Crockett's old buddy from Nam, and the last one of that season where John Leguizamo plays the son of Tubbs' first year nemesis Calderon are all classic.

I knew some DVD news about the series would surface in time for the movie. I was sort of hoping it would involve the release of season 3. Oh well.

Is it true Mann didn't have much to do with the show after Season 1? I know he left soon to make "Crime Story", which I think was a much better show. I mean, I liked some of the episodes, and I appreciated the cinematic aspects of the show, but after a while, it got old for me. I dig Don Johnson as Crockett and everything, but Philip Michael Thomas has to be one of the worst actors ever. For the sake of my mental health, I simply can't hear him do that jaw-droppingly terrible Jamaican accent again. Every time he went undecover he used that crappy accent!

I don’t know exactly how much Mann contributed to “Vice” that season. I know MANHUNTER came out in ’85, so between that and developing “Crime Story” I don’t know how much time he could have devoted to “Vice.”

I hear what you’re saying about Tubbs’ accent but overall I thought he was solid. Johnson and him played great off each other and no matter how sad Thomas’ career ended up I think he was just fine on the show. Though looking back at the old ones it’s Edward James Olmos who I’m impressed by more and more. He totally destroyed the cliché of the typical TV police captain who would always yell and scream.

I wasn't around when this was on the air. How was it, overall, as a show? Is it worth seeing without having any kind of nostalgia factor?

I was too young to get into it when it first ran but I think it goes beyond the nostalgia factor when being described as great. I’ll admit I enjoy seeing so many stars pop up in that show before they were huge but more often than not the guest stars were given real meaty roles. I can’t imagine anyone not having a good time with at least the first season, tons of great episodes in that one.

Bruce Willis as the wife beater was great and Burt Young as the drug czar who raped Gina was awsomenly funny.

Ed O'Neill as a FBI agent who goes undercover as a porn producer was pretty good as well.

$60, huh? Might have to bite. Do both sets have all the original music, or has some been replaced?

As far as I know Universal worked hard to make sure all the music was the same. If you look into the archived news at TVShowsonDVD.com they'ed probably have some articles about it.

Edward James Olmos does indeed stand out. Loved the two-parter in S1 where he suddenly knows karate. Ane he wears a speedo. Weird stuff.

Bruce Willis was a really nice guest villain. I also liked John Turturro as the pimp and Ving Rhames guest-starred in another one. There was pretty much a memorable supporting player in every episode.

Since it came up, did anyone get the Crime Story DVD sets? Are they any good? The sets I mean, I know the show is great.

I have the first season "Crime Story" set but there are no extras.

What I always found strange, and interesting, about Olmos' character was that he's Hispanic but practically all the episodes that revolved around him had an Asian theme. There's that 2 parter you mentioned with Joan Chen as his ex-wife, then there's one in season 2 titled "Bushido" where he eventually starts taking a couple guys out with a sword.

I even saw one on TV Land a couple days ago where Olmos teams up with a Japanese private investigator to eliminate a clan of Yakuza that have come to Miami. The kicker is what 2 actors do they obviously get to appear in a Yakuza themed episode? Cary Tagawa and James Hong.

Ving Rhames is one of the few guys on the show who played different characters during the show's run. Along with him Dennis Farina and John Leguizamo also pulled that one of.

Yep, those would pretty much be your go-to guys. There seems to be a clause in these guys contracts stating they're never allowed to play the same nationality twice in a row.

I will give the show credit for having Tagawa play the good private investigator. I would have figured for the usual Yakuza enforcer type role for him so it was a nice change of pace.

Oh, and that episode gets bonus points for having R. Lee Ermey as a crooked cop aiding the Yakuza's rise to power in Miami.

Extra bonus points for having a classic "Yakuza member cuts off his own finger because he has disgraced his clan" scene.

Bought the S1 & S2 two-pack at Costco on Tuesday for $40, and been watching it every night after work. I'm getting a major nostalgic kick from this, and it's cool seeing so many familiar faces (Suzy Amis as a runaway kiddie-porn actress in the undercover Bundy episode, Martin Ferrero as a drag assassin in the pilot, etc.)

Is the Tagawa/Hong episode in there somewhere?

Season 3 was my favorite year of VICE. The new post-MANHUNTER darker look (Mann was also really into silver and green then), the new car, Crockett's new shorter spikier hair...Liam Neeson as an Irish terrorist in the season premiere, trying to shoot down a commercial airliner with a stinger missile (not to mention Jeff Fahey as the arms dealer who not only sold the stingers in question but also blew up Crockett's original car as a demo)...I can't wait for Season 3 to come out. After that, I'm done with VICE on DVD.

As for CRIME STORY, yeah, I find it to be superior to VICE in most ways. As a period piece, its style was more retro and didn't date as quickly as the bleeding edge fashion of VICE. Plus, I loved the epic clash between Torrello and Luca. The only bummer is that the entire series was only two seasons long, ending with a rather desperate and failed cliffhanger bid for renewal.

Sadly no, that one is from the 4th season. But I think you'll get a kick out of the second season episode "Bushido" in which Castillo comes to the aid of an old associate played by Dean Stockwell.

I agree that the 3rd season is probably the last set that will be purchase worthy. I imagine that'll get a release around the same time the film comes to DVD.

I can't believe TV Land stopped running "Vice" in the middle of the night. All spring I had a bunch recorded and I figured they'd be running them at least until the movie was released. They were finally airing the ones from the last season and then just stopped before I could catch the one with Michael Chiklis.

I saw the one with Michael Chiklis back when Spike/TNN was running the show and I remember thinking it was quite dumb. It was about this super gun or something that was hitting the streets. I think I watched one or two episodes from the fifth season during that run and thought they were both subpar. The other one was the return of Farina as Lombard.

I have since become a fan through the first two seasons on dvd. I think I will stop at 3 as well, because even many hardcore fans admit that the fourth season is a train wreck.

Overall though, Crime Story was a much better show. Anyone who picks up this pack and enjoys Vice should have a great time with Crime Story as well. I even think the second season of that show gets a bit too much flak.
