What video games have/had the best representation of Hell?

I thought the "Hell" level from Painkiller was pretty good, mainly because it was wasn't the stereotypical "fire and brimstone" rendering that lots of other games and popular forms of media give the place; rather it was a unique idea that was well-realized in the game, even though the level itself wasn't that great from an actual gameplay point of view.

The Hell level from Doom 3 was fairly well done too, even though it was totally unoriginal: fire, brimstone, lakes of lava, demonic imagery, wailing voices, etc.

What are some other good versions of Hell in video games?

Have there really been that many to choose from? I mean, outside the Doom games, I'm having trouble thinking of any.

Spider-Man and the X-Men: Arcade's Revenge for the SNES. But it wasn't intentional at all.

Silent Hill? It isn't hell, but you could imagine easily enough.

Monkey Island!

ET: The Extraterrestial on Atari hands down.

Devil May Cry 3 had a decent representation (1 may have had one as well, but I can't recall).

God of War had a great Underworld level.

I think one of the EarthWorm Jim games had the best representation of hell.

I forget a lot of the specifics, but the one thing that always stuck with me were the screaming lawyers running at you with briefcases who would explode in a plume of paperwork on contact with you.

I remember enjoying the planar levels in Throne of Bhaal and Torment. Like the above poster, it's been too long for me to remember specifics but there was the typical fire and dismembered corpse thing going on.

Not quite hell, but the recent Call of Cthulu game had some creepy levels...Probably the best I've played in a while. The atmosphere combined with the sanity system created some hellish scenes. It probably helps if you dig the Lovecraft mythos stuff.

Can't believe someone beat me to E.T. Atari. I nominate Q*bert.

I came back to this thead to make that same suggestion, but you'd already grabbed it up. It was a good one indeed.

EA's NCAA FOOTBALL 2007 for Xbox 360 looks to have a very realistic rendering of Sanford Stadium in Athens, GA so that would probably get my vote.

You weren't alone. I thought of the first ones on my way out the door to work, and EWJ right after I got in the car. The lair of Evil the Cat has my vote for "best", no doubt about it.

Gotta love Doug TenNapel's Planet Heck, where music is constantly piped in that alternates between two songs and two songs only: Night on Bald Mountain and elevator music.

I'll second the God of War version - something about the constant stream of screaming, burning bodies falling from the sky did it for me... and the epic music... and the utter hell that I went through with those f*cken rotating blade sections.

I seem to remember that the Fear Effect had a pretty good representation of the Chinese (?) hell - all shadows and sharp lines... but that might have been the graphical limitations of the PS1.

Third vote for Earthworm Jim. The enemies were giant-toothed demons and lawyers.

Wasn't there a hell in SHADOW MAN?

It's not really a Hell level, but the "Purgatory" map from Requiem: Avenging Angel was well-done and fairly "Hellish."

Enjoyable game too, albeit kind of old; worth picking up if you're a 3D shooter fan.

The "Inferno" level from Unreal Tournament 2003/2004 was good too.

Painkiller's was awesome, agreed.

Also, not sure if it counts but the room in 'Eternal Darkness' when you'd get the book was plenty unsettling as well. Eyes and shit.

More a Lovecraftian hell dimension than Hell proper, but the Oneiros levels of Undying were pretty fucking awesome, all crumbling ruins and rocks floating in the void.

Constantine's Hell with the ashes from the sky and flying cars blowing in the wind was a sight to behold, at least on the XBox version.
