Nintendo: Wii <$250 - Page 3

A little history:

NES (1985): "core" system: $199/"Deluxe Set": $249 (but it came with R.O.B.!)
SNES (1991): $199
Nintendo 64 (1996): $199
Gamecube (2001)
: $199

As you can see, NOA has had a history of $199-priced TV-interfaced home consoles. Does this mean the Wii will follow the trend? Who knows, but I'm thinking we're going to be seeing a similarly priced system this holiday season (I'd also imagine they're attempting to beat Sony and will release the system in October, but that's likely just wishful thinking).

I don't know how they could justify charging $250 anyway. Isn't it an overclocked Gamecube? I'd like them to make a profit on consoles sold, but the Cube has been for a long time, even at $99.

No it really isn't....and no before the next person asks it is not an Xbox1. It is a next gen system without HD...if you would allowed such a thing to be called that. It has the same amount of power that a PS3 or XBOX would if they weren't devoting processor power to upscaling and other HD goodness.

So, we're getting closer to release date...who is actually buying a Wii? I'm considering, mainly because my son is starting to play games, and there's just not a huge amount of stuff on the PS2 as compared to the Gamecube/Wii as far as kid's games go. And being $250, and you can still play Gamecube games on it, I'm thinking about it.

I'm just anxiously awaiting a location that'll take my pre-order. I'm stoked.

I had completely forgotten that there was no Dolby Digital 5.1. The more I think about that, the more ridiculous it is.

I recently watched the "new" Star Wars DVDs in Dolby Pro Logic (curse you Lucas), and it sounded like ass. Maybe it was those particularly DVDs, but the lack of a dedicated bass channel and stereo sound to the rear speakers was jarring to my delicate hearing.
I'll be buying a Wii first day and promptly putting my Gamecube on eBay. I'll preorder if someplace has a decent pre-order bonus (come on, Toys R Us) otherwise I'll be waiting at Target's front door.
This will be my first launch day purchase since the PS1. Like gravedigger, I'll drop for pre-order if someplace has bonuses, otherwise, I fully intend on pulling an overnighter at Best Buy, and playing Meteos with my Nintendo-loving brethren until, ahem, the Wii hours of the morning.
That's worse than saying "wiimote", man.

I know. My self-respect died a while ago.

I'm surprised to hear that such drastic measures will be required. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I assumed that the roll-out of the Wii was going to be a lot smoother than the PS3 and XBOX 360.

Are we really going to see a threepeat of the same opening day snafus? Shortages, pre-orders going unfulfilled, demonspawn/scalpers pillaging Ebay? Say it ain't so.

What game(s) are you salivating for?
I think it's that the demand, at least on the Intertron, is pretty high for this thing. Amazon had to shut down their pre-orders within a couple hours last week because they underestimated demand and still don't know how many systems they're getting. Everyone is just really cautious considering the 360 release and what will probably happen with the PS3 release.

Personally, I'm excited for Zelda, Trauma Center, Excite Truck, Rayman, and I'm cautiously optimistic about Red Steel and Marvel Alliance at launch. Super Mario Galaxy and WarioWare are the games I'm looking forward to down the line right now.

Zelda, Trauma Center, Elebits, Monkey Ball, Metal Slug Anthology, Rayman at launch. Metroid, Mario Galaxy, Prince of Persia, and Wario Ware down the road. My cautious optimism antenna is up for Excite Truck, Sonic Wildfire, and Red Steel.

that's a complete load of bullshit.

(concerning the earlier $250 announcement that was said to be premature on Yahoo's part):

My plan is the same as Crow's, incidentally (though we'll probably be playing more Mario Kart outside the store). My interest in games is similar to both Crow and gravedigger, but other than Zelda and Trauma Center I'm going to be relying heavily on advance reviews (if any are deemed reliable).
Crow mentioned his PS1 launch purchase. I hate to say it but I dont remember the PS1 launch. How was thatlike? Were there just as many skeptics back then as there were when the XBox launched?
Not really, tell the truth. That original demo disc with Toshinden, Jumping Flash, Twisted Metal and Wipeout went a long way towards making people take a leap of faith with Sony, especially considering how horribly Sega mangled the Saturn launch, but the big selling point was that it was the first time the mainstream got a whiff of 3-D gaming. It felt like a gigantic jump in power in a way no system has since.

The skeptics were few at the PS1 launch.
Seriously. I remember playing that Jumping Flash demo over and over again.

Toshinden was amazing for the time. But truthfully, I probably played demo discs more than any real games for the PS1 when it first came out. Shit, one of the first games I had was Discworld...
Jumping Flash will never get the respect it deserves. It's the ONLY game from that system's launch that still stands the test of time, even in the shadow of the Mario 64s and Sly Coopers of the world. Actually, except for Halo 1, I can't think of a launch title for any system after the SNES that still garners admiration.
I'll be getting only Zelda and maybe Wii Play (I need to get a 2nd controller anyway) at launch with Trauma Center, Rayman and maybe Ultimate Alliance later on. MP3, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Paper Mario are somewhat definite 2007 buys. Maybe more of the early games once their prices drop.

I'd say Soul Calibur from Dreamcast's launch is still highly thought of. As is Mario 64, which you already mentioned.

The PS1 was a huge leap forward. Overnight, you went from 2D platformers to immersive 3D worlds. Not only the graphics, but the gameplay changed.
Crow is right on the money. Played through Jumping Flash just last winter and had a blast. A Jumping Flash 3 with next generation graphics would be sweet.
There was a Jumping Flash 3! Think it was Japan-only, though.

But yeah, man- haven't even thought of that series. That would be a great game to update.
I'll get a Wii at launch if I have the monye, which is presently a matter of great uncertainty.
Zelda looks like a safe bet to start it off on, too.
Maybe it's getting lost in all the positive Wii buzz, but the fact that Nintendo is delaying Zelda on the Cube by a month pisses me off. It's not as if the Wii won't sell out anyway, what's the point?
I imagine it's so they don't undercut sales of the Wii version when it is released in Japan. As it stands right now, I believe both versions will be out in Japan at the same time, and there's no way they could justify releasing the GC version in America without doing so back home.
That doesn't take into account the numerous gamers who'd buy both versions anyway, of course (which is a category I do not fall in, I should add). If this is true, it does make some business sense.

No, the biggest Question Mark in my book is why Super Paper Mario jumped ship to the Wii. Is it getting some new fancy accelerometer controls or what?

Ah, that was a great one. Unfortunately buying it in Japan meant no Eric Idle.

My guess is Nintendo realizing they have a Mario game closer to completion than Mario Galaxy, and making it a Wii title will shut up all those "we still don't have a Mario game at launch" people.

shit, I forgot Soul Calibur. Hell yeah, that game holds up.

Mario 64, though, is starting to show its age, as the DS version quickly pointed out. It's still great...just a few wrinkles is all (primarily, pain in the ass red coin fetch quests)
I'll take the Mario 64 red coin missions over the uniformly terrible red coin missions from Mario Sunshine. Jesus, that game is a giant pile of ass.

Those people should have shut up when they realized they were getting a Zelda game at launch.
I don't recall hearing anything about Super Paper Mario lately, so I don't know if it will end up even being released before Super Mario Galaxy or not anyway. I hope they are both released as soon as possible though since they both look great.

Which has what? Never happened?
You mean the exact same Zelda game that was originally supposed to be released more than a year ago? Yeah, I'm not going to pat Nintendo on the back for that one. The only reason Zelda is a next-gen game in the first place is because Nintendo couldn't get their shit together in a reasonable amount of time.

Although if Zelda *had* come out on Gamecube last year, I really wonder how they'd be handling this Wii launch. Would they have rushed an unfinished Mario game out the door? Delayed the console launch? I can't imagine launching with Excite Truck being your only first-party killer app.
You're offended that Zelda was delayed? Apparantly you're new to the whole Zelda thing. Delays are only good things.
I'm not offended. I just don't think Nintendo deserves congratulations for not being able to meet deadlines. Am I glad that there will be a good game on launch day? Sure. Would I rather have played through Twilight Princess last November and have a brand new killer app for the Wii to look forwards to right now? You bet.
I don't follow your logic. Why value one game you haven't played over another game you haven't played?
I'm not judging the quality of any game. I'm saying it's dumb to congratulate Nintendo for having a Zelda game at launch, since the game was supposed to be released last year. Not just this thread either; all over the internet fanboys are talking about how brilliant Nintendo is or how this is such a masterstroke. When Duke Nukem Forever is released, I hope those same people line up to shake the developers' hands for picking the perfect release weekend.
Oh, okay. Yeah, I don't think it's a "masterstroke". I'm just glad there's a game I'm interested in playing at launch (as opposed to PS3's launch line-up).
