Sony makes moves to stamp out lucrative second-hand market
Words: Matt Cundy

Wednesday 24 May 2006
High street games shops have been told by Sony that there will be no PS3 pre-owned sections in their stores as it will be illegal for customers to sell any next-gen PlayStation games that they've bought, retail sources have revealed to GamesRadar.

It seems that Sony is planning to adopt a licensing system that will mean gamers won't own the PS3 titles that they've paid money for. Instead, they will only be purchasing the licence to play the game and that the software itself will still be Sony property - meaning that the disc won't be the customer's to sell.

We assume that the thinking behind this move will ultimately be to stop PS3 games being resold several times - which currently snatches potential sales away from Sony - and to counter the impression in consumers' minds that games are only really worth their pre-owned price and are not worth buying new.

When we contacted Sony, it issued us with the following statement: "We have made all of the official announcements at E3 and cannot make any further comments at this time. We will be announcing more news running up to PlayStation 3's launch."

Well let me just say this.........Sony can kiss my ass, as of right now I mean how greedy is that, good lord!

That was already debunked.

Bring the price down $200, then we'll talk Playstation.

Ah, the internet. Helping gullible people make fools of themselves one rumor at a time.

The funny thing is that this is not a brand new rumor and it was debunked the same day. I guess with these things you have to wait a couple of weeks before it completely dies down.

Like that one about Jon Heder dying. That one got stamped out immediately but some people were still acting like he was dead months later.

You'd better believe that most of the major publishers are looking for a way to make this happen though. They hate pre-owned game sales. It's causing quite a big stink in the industry between retail and the publishers because most shops only stay afloat because of trade-ins.

Hell, Nintendo's already tried to squash the rental industry once before.

Let's face it, there are no good guys in this business. Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony don't give a shit about the health of your wallet. The only wallet that matters to them is their own, and if Sony were to actually kill off used gaming for their console, the only reason Microsoft and Nintendo would be pissed off about it is because they didn't do it first. The used game market could die tomorrow and Kataguri, Balmer and Reggie would all be running shirtless through the streets singing "We Are The Champions".

funny, just read this rumour and was ready to show it off like a proud papa, but i'm used to looking like an idiot. but seriously if any one publisher did this it would probably be the death knell for their individual system, they do need to get used to this being part of the industry now and adapt already, online content should be their new cash cow.

Strangely, Gamestop/EB Games no longer take PC trade-ins.

That's annoying as all hell.

But they do take DVD's which I know isn't something most would do. But when in a pinch I have been known to trade in some DVD's for some financial stress relief. Or to get my 360 for about $80, since I had already seen all the movies and didn't mind losing them.

What the OP is talking about is telling stores they can't rebuy and sell used games. While that is sort of bad, considering Amazon.com, EBAY, etc even if the retail places don't resell, other places can.

Why is that anyway?

The math is quite simple.

I know they make more on used games, but why does a store need to sell used product to survive? Isn't something wrong with that?
Because your average game store gets slaughtered on new game sales by the Best Buys and Circuit Cities and Targets of the world. While EB has a new game for $59.99, Best Buy usually has it for ten dollars cheaper the first week it's out. And since the bigger stores don't do trades, that's the one way to keep a leg up.

And Ryo is right -- it's mind-boggling to see a used game marked down all of five bucks. My feeling is they're hoping you think, "Eh, only five more bucks to buy it new."

Actual good PS3 news?

Even if SONY is not responsible for this rumor, that people were so ready to believe it tells you something about the way SONY has mishandled the debut of PS3.
SONY seems to think that everybody who has a PS 2 is automatically going to go out like good little zombies and plunk down the 500/600 bucks fopr PS3. They seem to making little attempt to overcome the resistance a LOT of people are having at the price tag. SONY might be in for a shock.
