Computerizin' my doodlin'

Thread Starter
So recently I've been kicking around an idea to start a little webcomic and to see if it's actually as amusing I think. What's the best way to get my drawings onto the computer as crisp, easy to play with images? I've got Photoshop 7 and Illustrator CS. I can work my way around photoshop but haven't found a really economic way to trace my scanned cartoons as graphic art. I know precisely dick about Illustrator, and any "how-to-get-started" suggestions (or links) would be cool.

How do you guys get your art on the computer?

Illustrator CS2 has what's called "live trace" where the idea is essentially that it will turn line drawings and simple artwork into vector graphics- you COULD upgrade to that, but even then the feature is hit-and-miss, and generally would require some manual tweaking to get a decent image out of it.

The best place to start with Illustrator, which really is probably going to be your best option here, is to get a book. If you want to take this seriously you'll want to be good with the program, so it's worth the time and money to learn it.

I'm afriad it's been a long time since I've started out on the Adobe programs so it's been a while since I've had to have a basic introduction- therefore I can't recommend anything specific. My Advice? spend a half hour or so in Borders or Barnes and Noble looking through the Illustrator books, trying to find something that speaks to you on a level you can understand - with clear language and PLENTY of screen-shot examples. Specific step-by-step tutorials for would be good too. Seems obvious but this is the way to go.

Is your art already drawn, and you're just looking to scan it, and then clean it up? Or are you creating from scratch on the computer?

I would personally suggest going with Photoshop, and getting a Wacom tablet if you're going to create more art. Illustrator is a harder program to learn in my opinion (I was learning them both at the same time), it always just seemed like I could get stuff done a lot quicker in Photoshop rather than Illustrator.

Also, not sure about your age, but if you're a student, you can get some pretty decent deals on Photoshop or Illustrator educational version, and the program is exactly like the regular version, it just doesn't come with a license so that you can make a profit off of what you create with the software.
