A Better Version of “Lady Vengeance”

So like a lot of people here imported Lady Vengeance as soon as I could. Considering the fine work that Tartan did with Oldboy, I imported the cheaper HK edition planning to upgrade to the Tartan when it came out and give the HK version to someone as a present.

However the Tartan version of Lady Vengeance as well as being practically bare-bones has an utterly horrid transfer. So are they planning on doing a ‘Mr. Vengeance and Audition’ and re-release the film with a better transfer under the special edition tag. After the sterling work on ‘A Bittersweet Life’ it’s a shame to see Tartan slip back into such bad habits.

Yeah, I noticed that the picture and sound was pretty shaky on the R2 dvd (I presume that's the one you were talking about). It's a shame because the Oldboy dvd is one of my favourite dvds. They even went all out with Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, it seems like they just rushed this one through.

I just really wish I hadn't given my HK edition now. And when a HK DVD is proving to be superior in audio/visual quality to a high profile British release you know something is going wrong.

Not necessarily. I have plenty of HK releases that I've kept instead of buying the UK versions because of their quality (INFERNAL AFFAIRS, for example).

They are getting better (Swordsman, Seven Swords, and Hard Boiled all have great DVD releases), but for every good release there are DVDs like 'The Mission' which are just mind numbling horrible, at least in Britain we seem to be at 80/20 horrible DVD ratio not 50/50.

I'll have to check out HK Infernal Affairs though.

I have the 2-disc CJ Entertainment version from Korea. It's pretty nice, so maybe you need to go that way. I may also pick up the US releases of all three films if the extras are subbed, but I'm not sure if they are or not.

I hate the fact that I have commentary tracks. Featurettes...and have absolutely no fucking idea whats being said.

Yeah, that's one of the reason's I wanted to wait and get the Tartan. The commentary and featurettes on Oldboy were brilliant, and after getting seriously annoyed at the lack of subs on the Survive Style 5+ extra features, I felt the extras on the korean disc would do me in. I was considering it, just for the funky fade to black and white effect.

I agree with Electrichead here. I picked up the HK Edko dvd and the 2 Disc CJ Korean special edition and the CJ is the better package. Although 2 discs is overkill I guess if you don't speak Korean the transfer is quite satisfactory.
