Stand-Up Comedy

I love stand-up comedy. I've only been to one show (got a free VIP pass with free drinks to Wanda Sykes a few weeks ago), but I have some DVDs/CDs/bootlegs I'd like to recommend to anyone who is interested...

Dave Chappelle - Killing Them Softly
Chris Rock - Bigger and Blacker
Chris Rock - Bring the Pain
Doug Stanhope - Deadbeat Hero
Doug Stanhope - Word of Mouth
Doug Stanhope - Die Laughing
Doug Stanhope - Something to Take the Edge Off
David Cross - Shut Up, You Fucking Baby!
David Cross - It's Not Funny
David Cross - The Pride is Back
Joe Rogan - Live From the Belly of the Beast
Eddie Griffin - Voodoo Child
Bill Hicks - Live
Bill Hicks - Sane Man
Bill Hicks - Arizona Bay
Bill Hicks - Rant in E-Minor
Bill Hicks - Flying Saucer Tour Vol. 1
Bill Hicks - Dangerous
Bill Hicks - Relentless
Bill Hicks - Revelations
Lewis Black - Black on Broadway
George Carlin - Jammin' in New York
George Carlin - Back in Town
George Carlin - Life Is Worth Losing
George Carlin - Complaints and Grievances
George Carlin - You Are All Diseased
Mitch Hedberg - Comedy Central special

The best bang for your buck would have to be Bill Hicks - Live because it has the most material (over 3 hours), including a full documentary that aired mere months after his untimely death in '94. Plus the performances on that disc rank alongside his best ever (including Revelations, Relentless). Rant in E-Minor is his best work, but you can only get it on CD so no video. Carlin's Back in Town is what turned me onto stand-up, and has to be my favorite work from him. Hedberg's Comedy Central special was brilliant but you can only bootleg it online as far as I know. Stanhope's Word of Mouth is downright incendiary and can be found on SacredCow.com.

I don't own any stuff from Ron White, but he's really funny.

It's on the DVD that comes with his classic "Mitch All Together" album.

BS, I have a suggestion for you:

Eddie Izzard: Dressed to Kill

You will laugh so hard you will actually become assless.

Robert Schimmel's "Unprotected." It's not on DVD but CC runs it a lot.

I know Earthquake has a DVD of his stuff which I haven't seen, but his HBO "One Night Stand" is one of the funniest 30 minutes of stand-up I've witnessed in a long time.

If you like those, you should really track down some of Carlin's stuff from the 60's and 70's. Class Clown and Occupation: Foole are both amazing albums. And I'm sure his early HBO specials (Carlin on Campus, A Place For My Stuff, etc.) must be available on DVD. Much funnier than what he's doing now.

Also, Richard Pryor Live. THE standup DVD. I cannot reccomend it strongly enough.

And of course, Bobbie Oliver. Although I may be slightly biased on that, as she's my wife.

I've actually got Carlin On Campus on cassette, and it's awesome.

I also recomment Steven Wright's I Have A Pony, it's him at the height of his powers.

That one is absolutely hilarious. This HBO special was my first exposure to Izzard doing stand-up, and I've loved the man ever since.

That french bit was pure genius!

The new Dane Cook CD/DVD is fantastic. I think it's called "Retaliation".

Patton Oswalt's Feelin' Kinda Patton is one of the best comedy albums I have ever heard.

It's dumb humor, sure, but Steve Martin's old stand-up cracks me up.

Eddie Murphy "Delirious" is my all-time favorite stand up act. Unfortunately, Murphy refuses to let it get the DVD treatment due to some very un-political correct humor. I have the VHS and its almost worn out. This thread reminds me that I need to burn it to DVD soon. And of course there's Murphy's predecessor's, Bill Cosby and Richard Pryor. Both get heavy rotation from me.

Oh, I can't believe I forgot that one! I've never seen the video but I've listened to the CD a bunch of times. What a shame that Murphy won't release a proper DVD treatment, because that might be his best work.

It's worth seeing, if only for Murphy's matching red leather jacket and pants. But the visuals are great, particularly during the part where an audience member screams something out causing Murphy to break his concentration and just crack up laughing.

After watching the video dozens of times, I finally figured out what transpired. If you listen carefully, you can hear a woman screaming throughout the first half of the show, "Do Mr. Robinson!" After the upteenth time, she yells it out again, to which some guy in the audience yells, "Shut up, bitch!" Murphy drops his microphone and just loses it, laughing for a good couple minutes. The look on his face when he heard, "Shut up, bitch!," is just priceless.

Original Kings of Comedy. D.L. Hughley's part sucks, but the rest of the movie is gold.

Also, even though lots of people around these parts have their issues with him, An Evening With Kevin Smith is vastly funnier than most of the material in his films, and that's from someone who's still a fan. Worth it for his stories about Jon Peters and Prince alone.

You can get all of Carlin's early stuff in a CD Boxed set (The Little David Years - Buy it from CHUD!). Occupation: Foole, Class Clown, Toledo Windowbox, FM & AM, An Evening with Wally Londo featuring Bill Slazslo, On the Road and 1 or two others. His more recent stuff is still funny but this is before he got all super-political and just spent the entire set being silly. Awesome, awesome stuff.

And Bill Cosby's Himself is gold as well. Especially the bits about getting drunk and going to the dentist.

Himself is good, but Cosby's "To Russell, My Brother, Who I Slept With" is one of the funniest goddamn things I've ever heard in my life, and I heard it for the first time a few years ago.

As for Carlin, I like the later stuff, but I feel that "Complaints and Grieveances" starts off strong (his bit about cooperating with the government in the wake of 9/11 is great), but quickly becomes repetitive and tiring.

I'm going to throw in a reccomendation for Robin Williams's "Live on Broadway." Sure, it's easy to dismiss the guy in the wake of his film work, but this is a truly fantastic album that has him driving 100 mph and not stopping for a second.

Hicks's "Rant in E Minor" is great as well, but my favorite bit of his has to be the one about rock music being de-balled.

My favorite modern comedy album, though, is David Cross's "Shut Up You Fucking Baby."

I concur with this. I watch it at least once a year.

The funniest man alive is Brian Regan- check his website for some of his bits- but definitely track down his cd and dvd.... pure comedy classics that never get old. I must have listened to that cd 50 times, and it's still funny. I do the Regan "dumb voice" whenever I do something stupid.

I used to be able to recite much of Delirious and Raw, but it was only recently that I figured out what that lady was yelling about.

Well into his act, Eddie was complaining about how hot it was (that tends to happen when wearing a complete leather suit), and it went something like this -
Quote:
Eddie - "I'm winded...our of breath...sweating and shit..."

Girl - "Take off your clothes!"
Guy - "Shut up, bitch!"

Eddie - (after losing it onstage) Ya'll didn't know I was a ventriloquist, too.
It sounds more like "Take off yyour clothes" than anything with Mr. Robinson, and it directly responds to what Eddie was talking about.

I'm going to have to check that out when I get home. But the lady in question was screaming things throughout the show. So while it may have been the clothes line that set the other guy off, I know for a fact earlier in the show she was yelling about Mr. Robinson.

I've been meaning to post a thread like this, glad someone saved me the trouble. I listened to Richard Pryor's 'That N**** Crazy' just hysterical stuff, I loved it when he started ordering drinks and when the waitress starts to walk away he yells out 'Wait bitch, I wasn't through' and his drunk impersonation is priceless, right up to him falling asleep next to his gf.

I also listened to Chris Rock's 'Born Suspect' another great comedy album.
