John Wayne-John Ford Film Collection

I'm looking forward to this set which hits June 6th.

Here's an interesting article about the restored version of The Searchers and a new Wayne/Ford documentary that is being released as well.

The set includes:

The Searchers
Fort Apache
She Wore A Yellow Ribbon
Stagecoach
They Were Expendable
The Wings of Eagles
3 Godfathers
The Long Voyage Home

"The Searchers" set comes out in the United States on June 6, along with "The John Wayne-John Ford Film Collection" boxed set that includes "Stagecoach," "Fort Apache" and "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon." A separate DVD set, "The John Ford Film Collection," comes out the same day, its films including "The Lost Patrol," "The Informer" and "Cheyenne Autumn."

It's nice to see that someone else is excited about this.

I'm also dying to pick up the other John Ford set that includes The Informer and Cheyenne Autumn.

Because Paramount owns that one?

Devin will be reviewing these for CHUD real soon.

That film came out in another set 4 years ago, I believe. They don't have the rights to it.

Most of the Wayne flicks at Paramount can be picked up pretty cheap. In fact, I got "In Harm's Way", "Hondo", "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence" and "Island in the Sky" for roughly five bucks a piece.

You can find most of them at Wal-Mart for cheap, but the quality isn't as great as the few box sets that are available.

But if you are just looking for the films themselves, they're a great bargain.

Well, these are part of the John Wayne Collection from Paramount.

Sure, the earlier versions of the Wayne flicks from WB weren't top quality. But most of the Paramount stuff are just singles out of the bigger boxsets that Paramount did. I'm just picking around stuff like "El Dorado" and "The Hight and the Mighty" that I don't want to watch.

Coupled with The John Ford Collection (which finally has the masterful Informer), I'm eagerly anticipating this collection like no other. It has the potential of being one of the best things on DVD put out this year.

Jason, have you seen The Searchers?

Ford's carefully constructed imagery, even though he himself wouldn't call it art, resonantes merely beyond its pictorial beauty. Ford helped shape our Western mythology with his tales, and Ford's staunch democratic view of the world helped pave the way for some of his favorite themes, like the uses of honor, courage, and loyalty, to which he and Wayne held by throughout their career, even when Ford began co-directing The Alamo without The Duke's wishes.

I haven't been able to confirm it yet, but I hope a bonus disc has the recent Ford/Wayne documentary I missed on PBS a couple of weeks back. EDITED - shit, I just read that CNN Press Release and I'm overjoyed it's on there.

I saw a very rough copy of The Searchers when I was at USC in 2001. It was a part of a weekend film festival. I really liked the film; hence my anticipation for this set.

What did you like about it? Curious really.

I really enjoyed watching the internal struggle of Wayne's character as looks for his niece (is that right?) as well as the relationship he develops with his half-indian nephew. It's a slow buildup, like peeling the layers off of an onion.
I wouldn't necessarily call it a "slow build up", as I think it moves along nicely throughout its dramatic struggles - inner and outer ones with Ethan.

Although I don't know if the film ever earned Pauline Kael's famous quip - "peculiarly formal and stilted." Ford has usually had formalist tendencies, in his depiction of imagery unfolding onscreen (and subsequently off) - but his simplicity within the narrative events is his second-nature, and I think his directorial discoveries, visual and character driven, spring from that. Especially within the movie.

But I still need to watch it again. It's been a while. This set is going to have a primo spot on my shelf.

I was pretty tired (just got done with a week long shoot on location) when I saw the film, so the pacing will probably play a little quicker that I remember it. But the time spent with the character is the biggest payoff that the film delivers on.
I would argue that it is a multitude of items - from character development to Ford's own massive leap forward visually that is the biggest payoff for the entire film.

I was speaking in personal terms. I really never saw Wayne play a character like he does here until I saw The Searchers. Seeing it made me a huge fan of Wayne's (and Ford's) instantly. Mind you, I grew up on my father watching Sands of Iwo Jima on a monthly basis, at least. So my view of Wayne was mainly based on that performance alone. (It's not a bad one, but when you've seen that film as much as I have...)

Unless I read wrong, today's Special Edition says that "The Conqueror" is included in this set.

Universal is trying to steal some thunder from that GOOD set with this five film set:

Five movies. Two DVDs. Fucking ridiculous.

That's just not right.

I'd really be interested in hearing what the Presentation Quality was on the Universal set since I've been wanting to watch "Jet Pilot" for awhile.

Jet Pilot is on AMC quite a lot.

I don't expect the quality of these films to be top notch, considering they are being crammed onto 2 discs.

I think time has been especially kind to John Wayne's films, especially the Ford ones. I just wish they'd make a special edition of RIO BRAVO.
I love this set like no other.

Plus, if anyone's interested, this take on THE SEARCHERS from A.O. Scott in Sunday's NY Times might be the best motherfuckin' thing you've read all week. Click here, immediately.

Rio Bravo is in the works at WHV

also its a Howard Hawks flick
I'm guessing Nordling 100% knows that. I think he was aggregating his thoughts for Wayne and wondering why BRAVO, as spectacular as it is, isn't out (quite yet) from Warner.

Adding more to the thread, I think the Pollard documentary on Wayne and Ford (produced for PBS' American Masters Series) is informative as all hell and touches fairly well into the pyschoses of both creative minds without being as intensive, as say McBride's splendid biography about Ford.
The Hawks/Wayne "Red River" also deserves a special edition treatment..even more then Rio Bravo since it is a better film. Don't get me wrong, Rio Bravo is great, but "Red River" is even greater.
