Sean Bean is the new HITCHER

CS reports that Sean Bean has landed Rutger Hauer's famous role of the scary HITCHER in the upcoming remake. Sophia Bush (Stay Alive) plays the female lead, the male one is yet to be cast.

Silent Hill
The Dark
The Hitcher

Mr Bean is making himself a name in horror, hm? But as good as he is, no way he'll ever reach the awesomeness of Rutger Hauer.

Sean Bean wasn't exactly a villain in Ronin, but hey... And am I the only one who thinks his roles in The Dark and Silent Hill are way too similar?

Great casting coup though. Month and a half ago, my boss received the script for this flick and was pretty impressed by it. So much that he ordered a report on the 1986 original, which of course no one in the office had even heard of it.
Is he jarring in The Dark too?
So, wait. The hitcher terrorizes a girl now? That's actually an interesting twist.
Sean Bean came away from THE DARK looking okay, mainly because he seemed vaguely incredulous at the shit he was acting in. No such luck in SILENT HILL.

I like this casting, though. As long as having a girl as the victim doesn't make this the usual over-sexed teen-horror crapfest.

Well, my excitement for this movie just shot up a ton. Sean Bean as a fuckin psycho stalker? Fucking awesome. I wonder if he's going to be talking with a british accent, or pullin a silent hill on us.
Ahem.

Anyone would get blasted for doing this on CHUD....

Still, interesting casting choice. I think he'd make a good hitcher, even if the movie isn't needed.

Well shoot, they're going to get my money anyway. When I first heard the remake rumors, I swore I wouldn't see it. Now they go cast Mr. Bean so now they get my money.
While I think the original is classic and Hauer can't be topped this is a very good choice. Sean Bean is one of the most underrated actors out there. He always brings seriousness and a gravitas to his roles.
I can't wait for the scene where the guy can't get a signal on his cell phone.

yes, he might pull a Silent Hill accent on us (West Virginia via Sheffield) but then again just to keep things interesting he might mix it up with a little of his North Country accent (Minnesota... VIA SHEFFIELD).

I like watching Bean in certain types of roles but he's terrible casting for the Rutger part. Thomas Jane would be better. also would be better if they kept some of that homoerotic tension from the original instead of changing the Hitchee character to female (if that is indeed true). also would be better if they changed the title of this movie from "The Hitcher" to "Bean... Stalks!"
The thing is, I want Bean to play him as unhinged as Hauer. I'm afraid he'll just do standard-issue baddie with this, but you can't do "The Hitcher" without the title character having more than a bit of crazy in him.
As long as we're on the topic of Bean, I'm gonna push Extremely Dangerous, an excellent British miniseries about an undercover agent framed for the brutal murder of his wife and daughter. Shows how he can carry a story.

My understanding was that the victim was actually going to be a brother & sister travelling acroos America. Which is going to make the tone more similar to Jeepers Creepers than the original Hitcher. A bad idea I think. The opening scenes in the original play out like a game of chess or a duel between the two protagonists. Adding another character there will skew it badly.

OK I'm going out to New Mexico in August for a set visit. So expect some news.
Hauer is an extremely tough act to follow in anything, even as the blind vigilante, but ESPECIALLY as John Ryder. That's a thankless proposition for Sean Bean, who has always been a stand-up actor.

Remake fever is depressing.

I mean, it's already Bean done!

Wow.

She'll say "oh no don't give that hitcher a ride. I duno trust him"

He'll say "aw c'mon it's raining and stuff"

Later she'll say "gosh I told you. you never listen to me"

Sometime later

Hitcher says "yo boy I got your chick"

He'll say "o god no. don't tear her apart with trucks"

Hitcher says "oh that is a good idea. thx buddy"

This remake sounds alot like Hitcher 2: I've Been Waiting for You. Only without Jake Busey.

Have y'all seen Essex Boys? He does creepy well in that, too.
The trailer pretty much killed any hope of me seeing this except as a rental a couple of years from now when I'm in an "aw, what the hell" sort of mood. I wasn't really looking forward to it anyway, but at least if you must do a remake, try to throw a fresh spin on it. It looks like it's mainly going be a complete rehash.
Agree that it looks like a complete rehash, except the guy will probably be the one who ends up tied to the truck this time. Bean has the Hauer look down pretty good. I'll give him that.
Yeah, that's the one thing I liked about the trailer- Bean's got the Hitcher look perfect.

But- ehh. Can't drudge much interest up for this one.

Greg was supposed to do a set visit for this for Chud, but no one knows what happened to that guy. Maybe Bean strapped him to the truck and drove off.

I have to say, that actor choices aside (and i AM a fan), i am pretty excited to see how this will turn out. I mean, i know the general consensus is that remakes always suck, but theres no sense in going into a movie with that opinion. I think its refreshing to see what someone elses take on a classic. I'm going.
I agree with Applebutter52, and i will even go a little further to say that this movie just MIGHT kiss some remake ass! I think its worth seeing on the big screen. Sean Bean was an excellent choice, i feel like he could play up the creepy pretty well.
You 2 fellas have swayed me. 34 tickets for THE HITCHER please!
Seriously! To be so passionate about a film as to sign up at a board just to talk about The Hitcher- it really speaks of what a great film this will be!!!!1
post #31 of 42
It looks like shit. The only good thing that could from this movie, is a Special Edition DVD of the original.
I think that may be the first time I've seen tag team schills. Awesome. I dub you the new Rock n' Roll Express. You may stay and share more schillness.

The current special edition dvd is pretty good. Robert Harmon's short film China Lake with Charles Napier and William Sanderson is worth seeing. That short landed Harmon the gig to direct Hitcher and it's not hard to see why. The commentary by Eric Red and Harmon is really boring.

It would be nice to get that in Region 1 format.

I have to say the previews with Sean Bean have been delicious.
3 shills for one movie? They couldn't get you interns to run out for coffee or something?
Didn't you hear him? It's going to kick remake ass.

eh.

The trailer makes the film look like a stinker. Sophia Bush's delivery of her lines seems stilted, and on par with the "Stop calling me" line from the Stranger remake. Bean, while a great actor seems blase in the preview. Grimacing and blandly reciting "I want to die", does not make and interesting antagonist. In contrast, Rutger Hauer seemed playful, calculating, and completely insane without descending into cheese.

I agree, it removes all tension and turns the film into a standard chase. Changing the sex of the hero also works against the film. The protagonist's dude getting chained to the truck, has half the impact of some innocent women being ripped in half. The only emotion it invoked in me is "sucks to be him", not "Oh shit! That poor girl!".
This movie looks like a complete retread of the original, except that the new "twist" is that it's a guy in between both trucks instead of the girl. Sean Bean is a great actor, but this movie is just a rental, or a dollar cinema showing.

Wow! Apparently infiltration marketing doesn't work. Especially on these boards.
