The Omen '06 Review and Discussion

My review here.

Didn't do it for me. Would have much preferred another sequel than this...
The Arrow apparently wasn't impressed either. Too bad, as I like Schrieber.

Consider it avoided.
I still don't understand the need to do a remake of this movie. It is still an effective movie, and despite Schrieber's involvement, nothing in this makes me want to go check it out.

It's sound nearly as bad as the shot-for-shot remake of Psycho.

It's an excuse to sell tickets, and to get more interest in the dvd. (which coincidentally is getting a rerelease soon)

I was really disapointed by how closely they followed the original. I even picked up the first one to make sure it wasn't just my memory playing tricks on me, but nope, even whole dialogue segments are lifted from the original.

It's not so much that it's a bad movie, it's that it's the same damn thing.... very similar to what was done with the Pscyho remake.

You run a horror site and you didn't own THE OMEN?

Uh.....

Yeah, I don't have a good excuse for that one. Still don't own it though, just rented it...
Well at least you've seen it, unlike "From Beyond"....

Might as well tap-in a remake of Lost souls while were at it....

I'm never gonna live that one down....

I heard rumors that the dvd release of that was going to be delayed, hope it doesn't happen- otherwise i'm going to be forced to download it.

But back to the Omen- the director of this one also remade Flight of the Phoenix... just so you know. He got attacked by an irate moviewatcher at the screening I went to- who screamed at him for using images of 9/11 (and not being a New Yorker) and called his movie a piece of shit. It was pretty funny. I especially find it funny that he seemed to think that no New Yorker would ever do something like that. I thought the beginning was the best part of the film...

More details, please?

Great review, Alex.

I saw the original back in the days and thought it was a good, but just good horror flick. The story was interesting and the scene with the babysitter gripping, but overall I didn't like it that much. Possibly because it's not that scary or thrilling.

I like Liev, but I think Julia Stiles is miscast. She's 20 years younger than Schreiber.

From the trailers etc it looks like a lush good looking rehash, with nothing new in terms of scenes or interpretations. Like the AmityVille remake.

Also.

Beside, it's not like there 20 quality movies about this subject, and there's just no real need to reshoot the whole thing while not adding anything pelicular. It's gonna be a see-on-TV when that happen.

Read your review again, saw where the 9/11 imagery was that you mentioned, and then felt nice and foolish for not catching that the first time I read it.

I'll get my coat.

No worries.

Seeing a lot of reviews that thought of the beginning as manipulative, but I thought it was somewhat ballsy. It's too bad it doesn't keep on going with that stuff.

I'm curious if anyone's going to go check it out today.... first Tuesday opening I can remember.
So it looks like there's at least some original stuff in here (between the beginning you mentioned and the ending touched on in Devin's review) to warrant a theatrical viewing, I may end up seeing this tonite after all.

The ending he speaks of is a single shot, one which more than half of is already shown in the trailers for the movie. It's nothing too crazy. And the beginning is all of 5 minutes..... don't go into this just to watch the new stuff, cause you're gonna be put to sleep in the middle.
Saw the film tonight. Wasn't impressed. Subtlety was not one of the its strengths.

Swipe-

The shot with Damien looking behind him as he holds onto an adult's hand? It's right after his adopted father gets shot trying to kill him.... and the hand he's holding belongs to the president, who's taken him in.
That's it?
Oh.

Swipe-
Sounds like they're planning on skipping part two and jumping straight to Sam Neill territory.
This film is guilty of gross misuse of the color red.

Swipe - Sam Neill gets killed by Raptor-Jesus.

Wow...glad I skipped it last night if THAT was the only difference. And Bob's probably right...which is a shame because I really enjoyed Part 2 (I also liked 3, but skipping 2 seems stupid as that's when he finally learns who he is).
After Devin's mention, I was kinda expecting something... well, something a bit more than that.

Was thinking the same exact thing, Bob. Which is why it wasn't exactly shocking to me- the idea's been used in the series before.

Btw- this is the shot i'm talking about- http://www.creature-corner.com/?type=news&id=1089
post #33 of 49
Didn't this happen in the old version too? I was always baffled at how they completely ignored it in 2.

Heh... found this clip of Damien in the car on the way to the church- check out how funny it is- http://www.hollywood.com/movies/video/id/3502611

Although you do miss the hysterical instant mood change as Damien sees the top of the church and his eyes narrow.
Saw it last night at 7:06 (6:66. . . . get it?). Aside from the "OMGscary!" moments, it felt kind of bland. There wasn't that lingering, back-of-your-mind sort of creepiness.
You know it's a bad movie when every time the son of the devil comes onscreen, the audience bursts out in laughter.

I felt like I was watching a live-action stewie movie.

How much you want to bet that The Omen 2 is announced soon?

Biggest 6/6/06 opening ever!

$12,633,666. Funny.

How is that ending any different than in the original ?

Actually that's right - went back and checked and Damien's holding the hand of the president in the original as well.

Rosemary's Baby remake, 2007. Bet.

I enjoyed it, I guess partly because I haven't seen the original in a very long time, and had forgotten many of the details in the middle of the movie.

The kid was horrible, horrible, horrible. I don't want to be mean, this is a very young child (is he 6,7 in real life), but goodness gracious his facial expressions did indeed evoke laughter most of the time. The worst moment was when he was going to go to the Church. Did the director not notice how laughably bad this was coming off? Or did he just resign himself to the fact that they miscast the anti-Christ and he was stuck with this kid?

I do hope they do at the very least one sequel, but c'mon, let's get creative and try something different.
The part that got the biggest laughter out of the audience I was with was near the beginning, when the first nanny is having the staredown with the german shepard. I remember I was laughing reallllly hard because of the dog's ears.

And everyone laughed at the best dialogue in the movie. "Big bad big? No, just big big."
Seen it and couldn't really enjoy it. It adds nothing to the original and therefore ends up being unnecessary.

I think the casting is pretty good (except Julia Stiles) and the movie looks fine, but there is NO fear and mucho wasted potential. The deaths look like ridiculous unused second unit stuff from Final Destination 3.

I mean, if it's the frickin antichrist himself I wanna see why. Let it rain blood. Let everything instantly die in his surrounding. Let him speak with the devils voice. Emily Rose was more frightening than Damien. This little shit was nothing to fear.

Swipe : Why the hell did the priest have the satan's symbol? He said only the antichrist has it. And why didn't Damien kill his mother right after pushing her to the ground? Best chance. -

2 cents for Mia Farrow, though. What a badass psychotic babysitter.
The kid in the original was much creepier.

Yet another remake that just makes the original that much superior.

Although, the 6/6/06 campaign was hard to pass up.

The Chainsaw remake/sequel looks even more futile.

Instead of making all these pointless redos of fine originals, I would love to see a Hammer-style revival, re-invention of the classic Universal characters along with some *gasp* original horror tales.

Don't remake Dracula, embrace him. Use whats already known and run with it.

Same for Frankenstein. Dean Kootnz has done some books on this.

Let's see a return of Van Helsing. First to help us forget that idiotic shitpile of the same name from Stephen Sommers and to create a horror version of Indiana Jones, thats really what he is, he hunts demons, vampire instead of artifacts.

So many more ways to go than to just remake it.

The problem with that though is, who would even remotely approach the coolness of Peter Cushing or Chris Lee?

Well, at least now the kid can say he got to 2nd base with Julia Stiles.
