So.. no director or writer has been attached yet. While I suspect a remake could never be as good as the original, the premise is open enough that a film made for US audiences might have some redeeming qualities all its own.
But I think everyone would agree that it isn't Battle Royale unless the premise is faithful to the original, the violence is graphic and intimate, and the actors look the part of high schoolers. Anything else and you're wasting everyone's time. What I definitely don't want to see are clichéd characters or unrealistic social interactions in the name of softening the impact of the violence.
