Ask the cinematographer

Hello. You might remember me as the one who started the "Faye Dunaway is No Longer Hot" thread over in Movie Miscellany.

While I may not be very skillful when it comes to observations on the aging processes of female movie stars, I do in fact know my way around the motion picture camera.

And thank God for that because I'll be the one behind the camera of "11 Colonels Attack!" this summer.

If anyone's got technical or creative questions about the film, go ahead and ask. I'm eager to get people excited, and while I can't give away too much about the plot or project status (until Nick, Andrew, and the rest of the guys spill the beans), I'll try to fuel the small, but flickering fire of interest here on the message boards.

First off, what camera(s) will you be using?

Second, what previous experience do you have?

Third, good to have you aboard.

Have you finished your boards yet?

(I'm kidding...)

((No, I'm not))

(((Yes, yes, I am)))

Damn it! I had a huge reply all ready to go, and for some reason, the MB wouldn't post it!

OK, short answer now.

1. Right now we're looking at the Varicam with an HD Fujinon Cine zoom lens (or primes if we can swing it). Shooting on film is also a possibility.

2. My previous experience is in short films and features that you're probably never going to see. I haven't even seen most of what I've shot. I do, however, have the reel I sent to the CHUD guys, so I'll post that tonight or tomorrow so you can check it out.

I get regular work at CNN as a camera operator, at the New York Film Academy as a teacher's assistant, the American Society of Cinematographers as an assistant to the museum curator and events coordinator, and my first industry article is going to be published in the July issue of American Cinematographer Magazine.

It's exciting to be a part of COLONELS, to say the least, and I'm honored be the one behind the camera.

Looking forward to seeing it.

Okay, here's the link to my reel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1mvnhZHMHc

Everything you see here was shot exclusively by myself on the Panasonic DVX100a camcorder (except for the beach stuff which was shot on the HVX200). I realize I'm going out on a limb for some major criticism, but what the hey, it's the Internet.

Ahhh yes... I do remember seeing some of this stuff a while back.

Looking forward to seeing what you do with Colonels.

Yes, so am I. I'm also looking forward to not having to operate the camera, light, work grip, and pull focus all at the same time, which is what I'm normally doing.

Guess you didn't get my new budget memo. I hate to break it to you, but...

Sounds like the first film I ever worked on.

By the way, they're kidding. Our DP is doing only one thing. Also, "I'll fuck you." is our little line to use in case of any static or mess-up. Anyone who's read the script gets the reference.

We're hoping to launch a new site in the near future with real stuff.

I'm also working on a series of storyboards for the baseball scenes right now. If you're good monkeys, maybe weird Uncle Sweeney will let you see a few.

I wish you hadn't explained it. I liked thinking that was Ultimately's desperate offer to get some more help.

What, you thought DP stood for Director of Photography?
