Sweet Jesus. I think I'm going to have to do the same thing as Dagon and buy this sight unseen (I have the movie on the way from netflix though).

$35? Nice.

I've already ebayed my other copy to make way for this one.

Whether it stays that price between now and September remains to be seen.
Aw, frig. Now I gotta buy this thing all over again.

Has anyone heard about the Brazil upgrade? When it's released or what it will feature?
Brazil upgrade? Balls. I guess my version's good enough for me.
The Brazil rerelease will be out early September. The main difference is a new, anamorphic transfer. At this point it seems the set will be otherwise the same as the current release. The first disc of the set (with the Director's Cut & Gilliam commentary) will also be released separately.

DVDBeaver has a review up here. I want this BAD.

I'm pretty sure the first Criterion double-dip was Wages of Fear.
No, it was Fritz Lang's M. Any Criterion retreads from their older DVD releases are more than welcome, as most were simple ports from the Laserdisc version to begin with, were non-anamorphic, and contained few or no special features. M was actually presented in the incorrect aspect ratio in its first release.

I'll echo the desire for double discers of the older Kurosawa releases. KAGEMUSHA and RAN are both awesome releases.

I'm so glad they're doing this. I hope the price is decent, seeing as I'll just be buying it for the improved transfer.

I was saddened to find that the current 3-discer going for peanuts on ebay, because I was planning on selling mine to upgrade. Maybe it will be worth something later to completists when it's a bit more rare.

*edit- added stuff.

So anyone find any early copies? I practically blew the Best Buy guy when he said they had a couple in the back, but no luck.
Wow, thats an amazing set. Will definitely be getting it one day. My DVD shopping list is too long as it is. >_<
post #64 of 81
Got mine on Pre-order, a birthday gift to myself. I'm buying a ton of Criterion at the moment to replace my shitty copies of excellent movies.

Best Buy has it for $34.39.

$34.99 on Amazon.

$39.86 at Deep Discount.

Yes.

I'm obsessing.

It's cool to obsess.
Now, I know that I'm getting at Best Buy.

Thanks, Nord.

I am holding it in my hand.

The new SEVEN SAMURAI box, that is.

Oh man. This is really beautiful. The best it's ever looked. It's not perfect, but I think they did the best possible job.

The 4.0 sound is wonderful too. The rain sequences sound full and look terrific.

I haven't played with the special features too much, but the ones I did look at were impressive. That Kurosawa interview is basically James Lipton but a lot more respectful and not so slobbering. The historical aspects of the samurai are fascinating as well, although I haven't finished either documentary yet.

The subs are different. I like them a lot so far, although I'm really curious about how different Kikuchiyo's Defense of Farmers speech is going to be (haven't got there yet).

All in all, so far, this is one of the best DVDs I've ever seen, and I'm so glad I have it.

The surround track registered on both my DVD players as 2.0 surround, which was also in accordance with the packaging (that has a 2.0 surround icon). Can you tell if it's 4.0?
Thread Starter
I'm listening to it on my headphones on my PC and it has a fuller sound than the regular mono track. The package says Dolby surround track, so it might not be 4.0 but that's what I've read on other sites.
I was pretty sure I was right, but it confused me. DVD Talk suggests it's 2.0 surround, so dunno. The DVD BEaver says 4.0, but he may also not be an audiophile, may not even have the six speaker set up. You never know. Still a lovely disc.
Screw it, I'll swallow the import charge and treat myself. I've been waiting patiently for SS to get a proper package.
so i went to best buy today to track it down and they had it for $42.99. I told the guy it was $34.39 according to the website, so he brings up the bestbuy site and it says $42.99. Defeated, I go home to double check and it comes up $34.39 on my home computer. WTF?

Edit to add: Asking for help in finding the DVD found me reenacting the scene out of Ghost World when that guy is looking for the Fellini film.
"ah yes, samurai X, that should be in... anime"
"no the akira kurosawa masterpiece!"
That reminds me of the time I went into a book store and told the girl working the counter I was looking for Jules Verne. She said "What does she write?" Fortunately, the other woman working there went kind of apeshit on her.

The idiot clerk was looking it up from the company intranet link, not the actual url.

Oh, and this set is indeed just about the best thing I could have hoped for.

Just got this in the mail the other day. It awaits me unopened.

Can't wait to check this baby out.

The film arrived this morning, I've had a flick through the book and a look at the first five minutes. Looks beautiful, I just don't have 3 spare hours...
