phantasmagoria!

i searched for threads on this film but couldnt see any, so apologies if this heas been discussed before.

anyway, today i have been reading about the upcoming film (and/or 4 shorts) known as phantasmagoria: the visions of lewis carroll. it is directed by and stars marilyn manson and he has cast model lilly cole in the part of alice

apparently there will be 4 short films shown on the site phantasmagoriamovie.com, the first being about the origin of tweedledum and tweedledee...i presume this means their origin inside carroll's head?

anyway, manson is talking about how he's going to be putting subliminal messages and other things "that will probably become illegal" in the film. sounds interesting...

i dont particularly like manson as a musical artist, but im pretty excited about this film, firstly because i was a big lewis carrol fan as a child, and secondly because i think manson is an interesting guy with some intelligent ideas on art.

anyone else interested?

I for one can't WAIT!!!!!!!!! to see what Mr. Manson brings to the screen.

If one person can find a way to do something "illegal" with a film it would be him.

R. Zombie did some cool stuff with cimema but Manson has an even more psychlogically demented acid trip of a mind. I think he may out do David Lynch in the 'what the fuck did I just see' territory ala Lost Highway/Eraserhead.

Have you been to phantasmagoriamovie.com? Am I missing something to enter the site or is that all they have up?

plus, i hope Manson chooses Dita Von Teese to be the red queeen.

just my thoughts. do with them as you will.

i have looked at the site, i think the first short film is supposed to be released later this year so i presume thats just a holding page.

dita could be fab as the red queen, apparently he was also talking to angelina jolie about this role because she enjoyed the "teaser trailer". i want to find this teaser trailer!

Personally, I'm tired of the whole "Let's make Alice in Wonderland really dark and sinister" thing. American McGee did it, McFarlane did it, Marilyn Manson's doing it - and if ever there was a trifecta of shallow Hot Topic trend followers it's those three. If you want a truly adult and intelligent take on the character of Alice, and the darkness bubbling beneath the surface of Victorian children's literature, pick up Alan Moore's Lost Girls.

The whole point with Lewis Carroll's story is that the weird, fucked-up stuff is subtext. It's a kids story. Making it explicitly weird and scary just to pander to the self-alienating goth crowd is to fundamentally miss the point.

I was a big Alice (especially "Through the Looking Glass") fan as a kid, but I'd be more interested in seeing American Mcgee's Alice with Sarah Michelle Gellar film get made, as opposed to seeing Manson pretending to be Rob Zombie.

Seconded.
I have a distinct soft spot for the American McGee version, and I'd like to see how the film works out. I think it's still in production.

And to think, I went into this thread thinking I'd be getting the inside scoop on the newest killer metal ball movie.

Don't feel too bad. I thought we were going to talk about the Sierra PC games of the same name. I'm a sucker for the "live actors digitized" adventure game era.
