This thread is to determine the course of future CHUD DRAFT knockouts. The top three will become our next three genres for cinematic knockout. Rules are the same as always. 5 votes per day. Can't Vote twice in a row.
The two largest potential knockouts are "Crime" and "Drama". A vote for either of those two means another huuuuge knockout, perhaps even bigger than comedy...
For smaller knockouts, I've sliced the larger Category of "Drama" into a couple of sub-genres: Epic/Historical (which would include certain war films, costume dramas, period pieces, etc), Romance...
I've also included a subset of the "Crime" category: "Mystery" (which includes suspense/thriller films, certain crime films, some detective films and police procedurals, etc...any film in which the central momentum of the film resolves around an element of mystery).
Of course, there are overlaps in most genres...A film like Se7en, for instance, would be included in the "Crime" category and the "Mystery" category. A film like Hoop Dreams might be in the Sports category or the Documentary category, etc...
For the purpose of this knockout, a "War" film can be defined as any film in which one in which central focus includes organized military engagement and said engagement constitutes the primary setting for the film's narrative develpment. I suppose this means that "Return of the King" would qualify. I don't know, we may have to reconsider this genre or perhaps try something like "American War Films" which would include only films which center on Wars involving the US military. That way, we could keep Red Dawn.
Anyway, if you want War films, vote for it and we'll sort it out in discussion.
Also, cheerleading is a sport. Get over it.
John Carpenter's The Thing could be in them all.
