A little quiz from the Chicago Sun Times...

The Hard Ones

I only got three or four of them.

Those links are broken.

Oops, thanks.

Fixed.
Are they both supposed to link to the same page? I only got 3-4 as well.

I got four.
Damn.
I want to be smart.

I got four as well.

Shit. I used to be smart.
I got a whopping two.
Fuck.
I never was smart.

Are the answers linked somewhere? I think I got nine on each page, but there are a couple I'm unsure of, and would love to know the ones I missed.

I got 2 or 3, and have absolutely no idea about the others. How is one supposed to tell from a shot of some random building?

Most of those buildings aren't random at all.

Swipe if you don't want some answers spoiled:

Take #2 in the hard set, A History of Violence. Memorable if you know Cronenberg, since it's one of the few that didn't begin with an artful credit montage. And he's obviously a Cronenberg fan since bonus #2 in the other page is Naked Lunch.

Or #8 in the hard set, which isn't hard at all: North By Northwest. That shot sets up the pattern for the awesome credits.

And he likes Hitchcock, too.

I got the first of the two you mentioned, since I saw the film recently. But most of those photos are not very descriptive images, nor the kind of thing one might remember unless it was a very recent viewing.

Wild guesses.

Quiz 1

1. Wild Guess - Purple Rose of Cairo
2 - 6. No idea
7. Sunrise A Song of Two Humans
8. North by Northwest
9. Out of Sight
10. No clue
11. Three Kings
12 through bonus. No idea although 12 and 13 look familiar.

The only one I know that no one else has mentioned is #5: Hard Eight.

#13 reminds me of Un Chien Andalou, but I don't think that eyeball shot was the opening image.

Quiz 2 seems a lot easier.

1. No idea.
2. Not sure, although I'm thinking maybe La Dolce Vita.
3. Not sure, but I'm thinking Psycho.
4. The Searchers (duh)
5. Blade Runner (duh)
6. Blue Velvet
7. 8 1/2
8. No idea.
9. Not sure. Maybe Royal Tenenbaums.
10. Touch of Evil
No idea on Bonus #1 or #2.

I thought #1 was "Do the Right Thing"

#2 stumped me. I thought it could've been anything from "Zorba the Greek" to "Z".

#3 = Psycho

4. The Searchers
5. Blade Runner
6. Blue Velvet
7. 8 1/2
8. No idea. If I had to guess, I'm thinking something by Herzog.
9. I'm thinking Rosemary's Baby, but the angle seems weird.
10. This is the one that I've been wracking my brain over. I can't figure out what it is.

The bonuses have left me stumped, but I think that I have the Bonus #2 flick. I'll know later.

#10 on the Easy Section was "Touch of Evil". I just finished scanning through the flick.

Looking closer at #2 on Quiz 2, I see a statue of Jesus under a helicopter. That has to be La Dolce Vita.

Looking at Quiz 1 and taking the hint that 4 directors are represented by two films, I'm thinking #2 is The Straight Story and I wonder if #13 is Kafka. Although I've only seen bits, #12 reminds me of Days of Heaven and is it possible that #3 is Badlands?

#2 on that one was "A History of Violence". At least, I thought it was.

I could hunt down the DVD and do a screengrab. Someone earlier in the thread pointed out how it was the drab Cronenberg opening, since it began in that dive motel.

I stuck in my DVD of La Dolce Vita this morning, and I'm able to confirm that #2 on the second quiz is indeed La Dolce Vita.

Answers to Quiz 2 are here. I'm pleased to see that we at least had correct speculations for all of them except 8 and the two bonuses.
