Sleater-Kinney are no more

I didn't see this coming. The band have officially called it quits. The irony is I've been listening to THE WOODS all week, and I've come to not only appreciate it, but truly adore it. It's a knock-out album, and a triumphant way to leave their legacy behind. Still a shame, though. I was eager to see where they would be headed next. What a catalogue.

Usually, when a band I love breaks up in their prime, I feel a bit relieved that they won't become one of those bands that you always have to preface with "early" when you're talking about how much you love them. But man, I was really looking forward to hearing what they were gonna do next. I am sad. And I never did get to see them live.

I guess I need to give The Woods another chance. I bought it based on a lot of reccomendations, and found it too noisy and loose for my taste. Granted, noisy and loose don't generally disqualify a band for me, I just remember flipping through tracks waiting for something to catch me. Still, sad to hear them breaking up, considering the amount of influence they've had over the years.

Sadness. They had an amazing run. But The Woods really seemed like a sign of more greatness to come.
That's too bad. The Woods is a great record.
It's sad, but it's not terribly surprising. I remember reading that the Woods was an attempt at re-energizing themselves as a band, which iimplies that all wasn't well directly prior. Still, if an achievement like the Woods (second only to Dig Me Out in my book) couldn't reinvigorate a band, I don't know what could.

What's especially troublesome is that they are/were one of the great rock collaborations, and their impact had a lot to do with the interplay between the voices and guitars. I'm not sure if I'd be quite as interested in Tucker's or Brownstein's solo output, since they balance each other so superbly. Brownstein's voice doesn't have the power of Tucker's, but what makes Tucker's voice so powerful is specifically that it's not a constant, but almost a sort of special effect.

It took me a good year before THE WOODS clicked. It might just be their best album. I always find something new to discover after each listen. Sleater-Kinney always showcased their musicianship in tactful, but forceful, fashion, with just the right amount of gusto and precision in their delivery to keep things moving along at a breakneck pace. They also knew how to churn out some great balladry and wear their hearts on their sleeves. 'Modern Girl' is a gorgeous gem.

Oh definitely. Sleater-Kinney were the epitome of a united rock band, at least in the studio. It's that chemistry and cohesion in their sound that always astounded me.

Sleater-Kinney has always been one of those bands whom I hear a lot of praise for but I never get to hear their music. Somehow, everytime I'm buying records, I forget about picking up something like Dig Me Out.

I'm a big fan of Veruca Salt. Are Sleater-Kinney in the same vibe?

As long as Slater-Whitehead stays together, we'll be ok.

No, not really. They are (were) kind of a unique beast. Pick up Dig Me Out or The Woods and you can't go wrong.

Ah fuck never got to see them live they cancelled at the last minute, last year...fuck

Great band.

Whoa. That sucks. THE HOT ROCK's one of my favorite albums.

Has anyone checked out Sleater-Kinney's last series of shows? I'll be at this evening's DC show (rescheduled from Tuesday because massive electrical problems forced the club to cancel the show and evacuate) and I was wondering what these last few shows have been like. This is my first (and last, apparently) S-K show, so I'm kind of excited.

Holy shit, Sleater-Kinney put on just about one of the best shows I've ever seen; it's kind of a shame that I've put off seeing them for so long. The world is definately going to be short one truly-great rock and roll band (at least we still have Wilco and Spoon).

You can download the entire show from NPR, over here: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/s...toryId=5583923 (seriously, it was amazing, go download it).

Wish I could have caught one of the last shows. Such a good live band.

Anyway, here are some more nifty picks from one of their final shows:

S-K played their final show in Portland last night before their indefinite hiatus, and it supposedly was taped for DVD release very soon (*crosses fingers and toes*). Eddie Vedder came out after the opening band and played two songs, 'Here's To The State Of Mississippi' (which Vedder also played during VH1 Storytellers) and the other being a duet on a ukulele with Janet Weiss, a song from THE JERK called 'Tonight You Belong To Me' (originally sung by Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters in the film). If this eventually hits DVD, I'd love to see the entire show, including Vedder's opening number.

I've never seen them live, but I've heard a couple songs by them. They were definitely good. I'm sure this puppet would've enjoyed them too.

Even though this puppet is not exactly great on the drums, I'm sure he'd have some appreciation for them and their music. But what I don't get about this clip is why is his name Fash? It's definitely not a drummer name.

A nicely-worded eulogy:

I'll miss 'em.

Didn't see the post count there. I actually visited the site to see why the damn puppet would be a Sleater Kinney fan. You sure got me Quysch.

Damn you, I came in here expecting reunion news!

New Corin Tucker album streaming.

A reunion seems more or less inevitable, given that even the band itself always called its time off a "hiatus," and in preparation, all three members are re-acclimating themselves to the spotlight

I'm not one to usually bump old threads without something genuinely important to say, but that particular day I was feeling the S-K bug really, really bad. Didn't mean to get your hopes up.
