Good interview.

I forgot Nighy was in Shawn of the Dead. Great gag, with him in the back of the vehicle and all.

Very much looking forward to Pirates this summer.

Was he as amicable as he reads? Good interview again, Devin.

I have wanted to marry Bill Nighy for some time now. Excellent.

Yeah, I could read about 12 more pages of that. I'm really looking forward to seeing Dead Man's Chest, and now I want to see the DVD special features.

"Deeply unsettling trousers". That's great.

That was a really good read. Nighy seems like a personable guy. Good to hear so many "real" actors got SHAUN.

Couldn't agree more. I have a total man-crush on that fella, and that was a fun read.

Nighy was the one actor who seemed actually engaged in Underworld, a feat unto itself. And when I saw him in the opening scene of Love Actually, I knew that it wasn't going to be the average chick-flick. He's been steadily gaining more and more recognition as of late, turning in great performances left and right (say what you will about Hitchhiker's Guide, but you can't deny how awesomely funny he was), and after this I think he's going to explode into the mainstream. Bravo, I say. It's not often an actor achieves this level of fame so late in his career.

I definitely disagree about Love Actually being one of the better movies of the last few years.
As far as romantic comedies go so far this decade, Love Actually stands tall above the rest.

LOVE ACTUALLY is a great film.

I'm with Devin on this one Love Actually is not just a good romantic movie but a pretty damn good movie period. Nighy is a big part of that but so were Rickman and Thompson in two very strong performances...hell even Hugh Grant was good in it.

Not really. I haven't seen it.

love actually was decent but that didnt solely rest on nighy. however the first underworld was interesting because of the vampire lord with the mysterious past. nighy was a big reason that film was watchable.

Notting Hill is a Richard Curtis comedy that gets the formula right. It's a warm, well written romantic comedy and a great feelgood film. Love Actually is a cold movie, probably because it's such an obvious cynical product, aimed at the Christmas/Valentine's market. It opens with an obnoxiously sweet wedding scene for Christ's sake. It's artificially sweetened to the point of sickening: every frame looks like it's been through color adjustment in Microsoft Romantic Comedy Editor 2000.

Add to this a horrendous jukebox of a soundtrack featuring Girls Aloud and Mariah Carey, and an assortment of unlikeable characters: the stereotypical annoying English prick abroad; the usually likeable Laura Linney playing an absolutely annoying shrew; the comedy swearing cockney maid; Michael Parkinson, England's piss-poor answer to Larry King. I did like Bill Nighy, though.

I guess that's gonna have to be chalked up to different strokes, because Love Actually struck me as one of the few romantic comedies out there that felt genuine.

Good stuff again Devin. You really are spoiled!

Nighy is one of the best IMHO. I'm amazed nobody here ever mentions Still Crazy! I love that film, and once again he's great in that!

Also his performance in Curtis' HBO film The Girl in the Cafe was fantastic. So understated, but yet very passionate, I thought.

Second The Girl In The Cafe love. Nighy is fantastic throughout the entire movie.

Agreed. The only thing that made the canned pathos of Love Actually bearable for me were quality performances from the likes of Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, and the porno couple. I'm not averse to obnoxious sweetness, or cynical manipulation, but the the Love in Love Actually was so schematic and sketchy that it had no substance (other than the meager sense of cuteness elicited by the bad pop music and seemingly ubiquitous cheering bystanders).

Bill Nighy was great though, and I'm surprised that in this land of the geeks no one has mentioned his performance as Sam in the BBC Radio version of The Lord of the Rings. Far and away the best interpretation of the character.

I want to know when he'll go back to being the Science Guy.

Probably when that joke has been retired for a while.
