Psych

Psych is a new Detective show on USA network.. which I think is half comedy half drama.

Psych

Kinda in the vein of monk.. but with a con artist appeal.

It debuts July 7th and I think its worth a go.

looking forward to seeing it. I like the idea a lot. It really almost feels like a spoof of Monk based on the commercials.

I hope they really make fun of the psychic powers bullshit as opposed to playing it up in a cheeseball Jennifer Love Hewitt, Anthony Michael Hall, Dione Warwick, Miss Cleo, John Edward, the guy who looks like a gay John Stossel, sort of way.

I've loved the previews for this. Although they need to get Dule Hill out of a suit... it looks like he's just stepped out of The West Wing.

My understanding is that he is not really psychic. He is just good at observation and pretends that he is psychic because it is cooler.

That's correct. He fakes it so he can make money, basically.

So it's like Remington Steele? I can't wait for the romantic sparks to fly between those two.

I really liked this first episode.

If you have time warner digital cable, you can watch a sneak preview of the pilot episode with cable on demand.

Watched it tonight and its a fun little show. It made me laugh, so I'll definately tune in next week.
I love how there's a generic description for the reruns after tonight... my TiVo is slated to record each and every single one... and it's going to be the first episode over and over and over...
I'm looking forward to catching this tonight, if for no other reason than DULE.
Can't wait to see this in a few minutes. The slacker aspect makes it sound a bit like Lucky, the now cancelled FX sitcom which I really enjoyed.
Thought it was pretty good.

I liked it. The characters are a bit one-note but as this was the premiere I hope that improves with time. The show could go down the road of seeming to gimmicky, but so far I'm digging it.

Also, as I was watching I thought to myself that Psych seemed similar to USA's other shows and then bingo I see a commercial with the Dead Zone and Psych guys debating who's "gifts" are better, while deciding that they were both better than Monk.
I thought Roday was pretty fucking terrific in this. I'll be sticking around until the end.
Loved it. Dule was hilarious in his cowardness/"I don't want to get in trouble" mentality. The little clip of him doing his Jackson impression was funny as well.

Who wants to bet Shawn and his dad are solving a mystery in an episode by the end of the season?
It's more like what's the over/under set at?

Well it looks like we'll be getting another season out of the show. Unless it somehow loses a catastrophic amount of viewers by seasons end.

PSYCH DEBUTS AS THIS YEAR'S MOST WATCHED NEW SHOW IN BASIC CABLE
MONK SETS RECORDS IN NEW TIMESLOT

NEW YORK, NY - July 10, 2006 - USA Network took the ratings crown this past Friday with new series PSYCH debuting as the highest rated new scripted series on basic cable this year. Emmy nominated MONK set new records becoming the most watched scripted hour in basic cable ever at Fridays 9PM.

With a 4.51 rating and an average of 6.1 million total viewers. PSYCH was the highest rated scripted series premiere on basic cable this year in all key demos (households, P18-49, P25-54, and total viewers).

The MONK Season 5 premiere earned more viewers than any scripted hour in basic cable ever in the Friday 9PM hour, with an average of 5.1 million total viewers (3.89 rating).

The success of these two programs also translated to viewers on usanetwork.com. Good Episode tonight, although I dislike that it appears they have aired an episode out of sequence.
This is a great show. I knew Dule would be awesome but I didn't expect to like James Roday as much as I do.

What makes you think that?

EpGuides shows the second episode as the second produced, and I didn't spot anything to make me think otherwise.
Quartermain, I think he is saying that because of the new young female cop, who magically replaced the chick from the pilot. I assumed it was recast after the pilot.
I like the show. James Roday is a bit Sam Rockwellish, that's cool.

Yeah.. that new girl must have appeared after the pilot...for some adjustments?

This second episode was still pretty good.

The Bannana bit at the spelling bee was pretty funny.
Well... they introduced her like they would a new character, so it makes you wonder where the other actress went off to? Only a minor fault in an otherwise good episode.
Test audience's didn't warm up to Anne Dudek character so they replaced her with Maggie Lawson. It's not uncommon for this kinda thing to happen.

Dule and Roday are awesome together and Corbin fucking Bernsen is on a roll. First Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang and now this. He's moved up from the underworld of General Hospital.
Two episodes in, show is going good. Will stay on the DVR.

Didn't someone mention that the asshole cop had his partner/girlfriend transferred ebcause they couldn't work together? It was their attempt to explain the new girl.

That was the only thing that kept me watching, really. Funny stuff. "I need to go to the store to pick up some Mitchum's meat... and ba-na-nas."
Yeah basically the partner change is why I though they skipped an episode. I also remember where he awnsered the phone "Psych" and they haven't shown him open up his "office" yet.

And I believe they said that the other female partner was his ex-girlfriend. So it seems like there is something missing there.

I've also been wondering. If USA network is owned by NBC(at least I think it is) why haven't they given shows like Monk, Dead Zone, 4400, Psych a chance on the big network. I mean these shows are better than 90% of the stuff on NBC right now, and better than most stuff on other networks. So why not give it a shot.
NBC ran a 4400 special a week or so before it's new season began and a few years ago they showed the Battlestar Galatica mini series. So we could see more of this kinda thing in the future.
I missed this week's episode but I wasn't let down by the pilot. I figure Roday in all his Tom Cruise/Scott Wolf likeness is doing basically an Ace Ventura knockoff minus the animals. I don't mind it, I'm still unabashed in my love for the two Pet Dic films. When the pilot usually sucks the most, this series has a lot of promise.
best one yet tonight.

The balance finally seemed right between mystery and comedy. That or maybe I've just gotten used to their formula.

Am I crazy, cause I thought remembered that scene being in the pilot.
Not crazy. The epilogue of the pilot was Shawn convincing Gus to become partners since his name was on the lease and then they joked about the name.
Right. It was at the end of the pilot because they get another call for another case and drive away from the new office. Just in case others missed it and want to know some of the details.

Anyone else notice the new opening sequence?
For anyone that's wants to give this show a chance (or really liked the first episode), iTunes has the pilot available to download for free.

I was totally unaware that the police chief was pregnant until this episode.

I will say that this last episode of the Bank robbery/lost money was probably one of the best so far.

Dialogue asides about MBB (meridith baxter berney)
Grace Jones (in a list of dangerous women)
and the bit about the man's Hair

made this episode really damn funny.

NBC is airing a few repeat episodes on August 7 and 14. So for the people without Showtime, come and enjoy a funny and quirky show!
Showtime? Don't you mean USA?
Yeah, you're right. The point is NBC is showing it so people without cable can check it out.
But what's the point of that? "Ha! Ha! Look what show you're missing! Too bad you don't get USA!"
If it gets good enough ratings its possible NBC could show it sometime on the weekends for those without cable.

I think giving Monk and Psych a shot on the big network on a large scale basis would be nothing but a good thing.

Say Friday nights leading up to Law and Order:Classic

What the fuck? It's so people who don't have USA can get a chance to see a pretty decent show. Just spreading the word. Was that so hard for you to comprehend? You're making it out that i'm rubbing it in people's faces.
No, I'm making it sound like NBC is rubbing it in people's faces.

I think it's a cool idea if they run all the eps. But showing a few episodes to get people hooked to a show that they don't have access to sucks. Unless, as Jason suggested, they are doing this to test whether the show could garner enough viewership to make a move to a larger network.
It's for the hope that some people will actually go out and purchase USA, which creates higher ratings and money.
USA comes with most basic cable packages. So either people have the channel or they don't. No one is going to get cable for this show. For the people who do have USA, it could tune them in to a new show. But personally, no matter how good a show is, I can't come in mid-season. As for the show, I've been watching but I'm starting to get bored by the gimmick.
Yeah I am starting to find the "Sit" tiring as well.

I wish he wasn't hiding it from everyone, like if a few people knew he was lying besides his partner, I think I'd like it better. I just think the falling-over-cause-a-vision-just-hit-me act is already getting old, and was never funny.
Well... his father knows he is faking it, but he hasn't been in any of the recent episodes during the present day.

Sometimes the "falling-over-cause-a-vision-just-hit-me" is funny, but it's not nessasary every time he is around the cops. I think the last episode with the cat mellowed it down a little bit. And by mellowed down I mean he used the cat as the device.
