MST3K-- good times

Props to GBS.TV for reminding me of this and the ever-reliable YouTube for having it in their archive.

Oh, and Jagermeister shots for enabling me to browse the internet at this ungodly hour (even though after 4 shots I suppose I should be sleeping right now). Although it did take me ten minutes to write all this.

Edited to correct drunken grammar.

That's awesome. Found one of the summer movie previews they did on YouTube. Sucks that it wasn't the one that had Batman and Robin.

This show is why television was invented. John Logie Baird might not have realized it when he turned on the first fully functional TV, but it is.

Oh cool, the missing dune buggy scene from Mitchell! Now I know how John Saxon was killed and that he was connected to Martin Balsam and Merlin Olsen! Thanks man. I love how Joe Don squeals when he smashed that dude's head with a rock.

This show lost alot when Joel left. Mike was good, but he wasn't as natural or as deadpan as Joel. That being said, MST3K was comedy gold for many years.

What IS Joel up to nowadays? He really fell off the face of the earth.

Explain the appeal of this show to me. I don't get it. Making fun of dumb b-movies is like shooting fish in a barrel, and I don't understand why you'd want to watch someone else do it.
Ditto. It reminds me of Jabootu and all those other sites I'm not a fan of. People trying to be clever by ripping B-movies, and just coming off as smug as opposed to funny or entertaining.
It's all in the execution, which, 8 out of 10 times, was brilliant.
But aren't these movies funny anyway? How does having some puppets and spaceman point out how stupid they are make them funnier? Everytime I've seen one, it's been kinda cute for about five minutes and then just really annoying.
It's no Benny Hill, but it's the best America can do.
I just recently watched my first full ep of the show on Youtube (Future War) and it was awesome. It was even better than the Jabootu review...

Nun in movie:"God listens to prayer.."
Servo:"...but only from Catholics!"

Fantastic show. I especially enjoy the old 50s educational shorts such as how to groom oneself or have a family dinner.

Nelson wasn't as immediately likable as Hodgson, but he was a much better writer.

Interestingly, I thought the show survived surprisingly unscathed without Joel, but really took a quality hit when Frank left. And of course, when it moved to Sci Fi and lost Trace, it was all over. But yes, the best stuff is from the Joel days.

And Charlie, maybe it really is one of those American cultural things.

What really steams me is that I had a huge collection of these on VHS. I hauled a bunch of tapes off to the dump a couple of years ago without looking in the boxes, and I lost them. There were things in there that will never be released on DVD, too, like the Gameras and Godzillas. I could slap myself.

But he was head writer during Hodgson's run, so that shouldn't have mattered.

I think Boogen put it best....you giggle through most of it, but there are usually some genuine laugh-out-loud moments that make it great. Plus, when they throw in the occassional really obscure reference that you get, it makes you think they're in your head.

I thought smug was the last thing they came off as.

BTW, I have almost every episode (missing a few KTMA) on my computer. If anyone is interested in them, PM me. It would probably only cost you a 140 GB hard drive, the shipping cost, and some patience. Of course, I'd have to take out the episodes that are on official sale. Gotta circulate the tapes!

Just pointing out their respective attributes. Nelson's book of movie reviews is pretty damn funny, BTW.

Yes. I never really got into the show but that book is a riot. He tears so many movies I love to shreds but he did a really good job of it.

Often the movies themselves provided as many laughs as the riffs. The crew almost never talked over the movies' dialogue. And, furthermore: Knew your father, I did!
As a teenager, I would rather spend Friday nights home so I could watch this show than be out cavorting with friends. As sad and pathetic as that is, it was totally worth it.

A few shout outs to other episodes I love, Warrior of the Lost World, Laserblast, Pod People, Master Ninja, Fugitive Alien... Suppose I could go on and on. During a Mike Nelson personal appearance in 96, the same time as the movie release, he autographed a one sheet of the movie for me. Years later it was stolen. Somewhere somebody has a MST movie onesheet personalized Keith, don't eat glass, hanging in their home. Fuckers.

Not going to get into the Joel vs. Mike argument. It seems a huge number of people were never even aware of Joel, perhaps that has something to do with the movie, and Mike was first for them, and therefore they appreciate him more. Toss up, but I will always have a soft spot for the droopy eyed genius of Joel Hodgson.
What the hell is Hodgson doing these days? Is there enough residual money from this thing for him to just lay back? The thought of somebody who once had a genius TV show doing a regular job is kind of depressing.

Edit: Apparently, he's been a writer on Jimmy Kimmel live.
From what I can gather on the web, Hodgson is doing anything he wants. Starting companies with his brother, producing a show on the Discovery channel, being involved in all kinds of projects that never come to fruition.

Occasionally, you can catch his old stand up routine on cable in an old Saturday Night Live or Young Comedians Special. Hard to describe, sort of Gallagher but wildly funny and inventive. For you younger Chewers, Gallagher is the father of Carrot Top.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and the Jimmy Kimmel business. I guess I chose to ignore that part.

I assume they're talking about Mike Nelson's Movie Megacheese, which is indeed quite humorous.

That's the one.

Here's a quick bit from Nelson's essay on Van Damme:

Quote:
The fact that you and I even know who he is stands as testimony to the sad fact that, as we try to understand, even manage, the human struggle entire, some things fall through the cracks, and occasionally, despite our best efforts, chunk-headed muscle guys from Belgium end up as trillionaires, everyone else standing by scratching their heads wondering how it happened. But we mustn’t blame ourselves. We mustn’t become bitter. We must act with charity toward the sawed-off little lummox.

Through all of Mr. Claude Van Damme’s films, from BLOODSPORT to CYBORG, from UNIVERSAL SOLDIER to DEATH WARRANT, one theme remains constant: a pitiable chunk of Walloon butt-steak knocking the stuffing out of someone even dumber than himself. Few filmmakers have been as true to their vision as Mr. Claude Van Damme. One other theme remains constant: me watching his films and then complaining, and then watching the next one, till I’ve seen pretty much everything he’s done.
On TIMECOP:

Quote:
Yes, Jean Damme is…a Timecop. One of those hardworking, yet in my opinion shamefully underpaid, civil servants who polices the comings and goings of rogue time travelers. Ron Silver plays an evil senator who approved money for the Timecop division and is now using the technology to steal money from the past for his current presidential run. There’s boundless vision for you. You can travel anywhere in the history of Earth itself, the Mesozoic, Mycenae 1600 B.C., the time of Christ? Thank you, no. I’m fine with petty Civil War robberies in an attempt to prop up my sagging presidential bid.

Goddamn, that's a must-buy.

Since I've been feeling all nostalgic of late anyway, I dug out the old VHS tape of Master Ninja I after reading this thread earlier and gave it a whirl. Funny shit. They tear Timothy Van Patten a new one.

God I miss this show.

Prop Comedy. There's something about it that irks me and at the same time, really tickles me pink.
