It depends on if you look at it as an all-or-nothing definition of success. Personally, I wouldn't call it a failure, just mediocre.

However, if you look at the huge marketing push it had and then the underwhelming result, it could be viewed as a failure.

Now that, yes. Whether or not the film is failure is indeed arguable. It's just terms like "unmitigated disaster" that I have an issue with.

I mean, I hear that and I think the film opened with GIGLI numbers. If $190-200 million domestically and possibly close to $400 WW is a "disaster" or "total belly-flop" then what would an actual bust like $100 million or less have been?

Perspective is all I'm asking for. That and for words to actually MEAN something again instead of being constantly desensitized through hyperbole.

I still maintain that SUPERMAN RETURNS is merely a big disappointment for WB financially. No more, no less. It's not a hit. It's not a total flop, either.
