Quick Question: How to Play "God of War" on a 16x9 TV

Sorry, when it comes to the PS2 and the 16X9 set up, I am afraid I am doing this wrong.

I went to the set up options under my PS2, and have my settings set as 16:9 - as my tv is -

I went to the options Menu for the game, "God of War" and set the progressive scan to On, which my Tv then shows as 480p, which is good. But, when I switch my setting to Widescreen in the game, my Tv wants to leave it in the 4:3 size - now, on the Xbox, the tv will be able to tell if the game was designed with 4:3 or 16:9 each time, but it plays dumb with the PS2 - I assume just due to the PS2 being old.....

long question short: For those that have played this on the your 16:9 Tv, did you have to manually adjust your tv to make it widescreen, or did the PS2 do it for you?

Thanks!

Matt

Is your problem only with this movie? I seem to remember Lionsgate recalled the original run of this DVD because the aspect ratio was incorrect...

Thanks for the reply. I have been online trying to see what is up with the PS2.

This is a game that offers both a progressive and a widescreen mode. The more I am playing with the game, the more I think that the widescreen mode is not a 'real' one.

When I play a game on my XBox that is 480p and designed for widescreen, my 46" DLP Toshiba HD TV will play it in the correct ratio (16:9).

When I do switch the game option from Normal to Widescreen, the image does change, but I have to then go to my Tv and manually stretch the image out to a 16:9 one - it looks pretty decent that way.

Is the PS2 capable of a true Widescreen 16:9 mode? I have all of the PS2 options set to that mode - on the options screen, on the DVD menu, and on the game option - it does not seem to tuly offer a real 16:9 format.

The game is pretty cool and all - just wish that the PS2 did not give me a hard time with the formatting. Just makes me love my XBOX all the more.

This is not a bash, but the PS2 is older and a more fickle machine in comparison.

Ooops, for some reason I read your post as "Lord of War" (the Nick Cage arms dealer flick). Can't help, I'm afraid.

Do you have the PS2 connected with Component inputs to your TV? 16x9 won't work with S-Video or Composite video.

As far as I know, the PS2 is only capable of 480i or 480p. I haven't messed around with widescreen mode on God of War too much (I've got my PS2 connected with a component cable, by the way), but from what I can see and what I've read, it's cropped, not true widescreen. You're better off leaving it in 4:3 mode.

Thanks alot everyone for the responses. Yes, I have my PS2 hooked up to component cables and I even kept the PS2 manual, which I re-read.

Under the options, I have the setting as 16:9
I then switched the game over to the Widescreen mode....normally, when my Tv is switched over to its 'natural' mode, it'll automatically covert the image to either 4:3 or 16:9 depending on the game etc, but not so for God of War.

I then went online and it seemed to me that it is a 'cropped' widescreen and not true 16:9, so I decided to just leave it in the 4:3 mode, which is a damn shame. As much fun as I am having, God of War just screams for a true 16:9 presentation.

Thanks again, all.
