Favorite N64 Games

What were some of your favorite N64 games?

Mine:

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time; Just a great game full of big worlds to explore and nicely brought the series into the 3-D realm. One of my favorite games ever.

Goldeneye 007: Classic game from Rare’s glory years. They did a great job of recreating the film and replaying the game with various cheats was fun. The multiplayer was like video game crack.

Perfect Dark: Great follow-up to Goldeneye. Lots of fun levels involving aliens, Area 51, Air Force One, deep sea wrecks and huge skyscrapers with helicopters. The cheats and multiplayer were fun too.

Banjo-Kazooie
: Sure, the game’s got a childish sheen to it, but it’s still lots of fun. I remember spending most of summer ‘98 playing this thing. The levels were vast and the secrets (magic spell books, for example) were fun to look for.

Super Smash Bros.
: Fun game to play with friends or even by yourself. Maybe it’s dated due to the superior Gamecube sequel but it’s still fun to play.

Diddy Kong Racing/ Mario Kart: Just decided to lump them both in this spot since both are fun games. However, I’d say DK Racing was better since it gave us more levels and just more stuff to do.

Shadows of the Empire: One of the early games for the system. Had some fun levels (the opening Hoth battle, train level with IG-88, swoop biker race) and cool soundtrack.

Mario 64: Fun game with many levels to explore. I loved surfing on the shell and walking around as Metal Mario.

Rogue Squadron: Good game with lots of challenging missions. I liked the cheats where you could use the Millennium Falcon and the Tie Fighters.

1080 Snowboarding: Fun game with nice graphics and tracks.

Honorable mentions (Lots of other fun games): Star Fox 64, Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, Mario Party (1-3), NFL Blitz, Kobe Bryant NBA Courtside, Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, and Bomberman 64.

Never played Paper Mario, but heard it was very good.

I just got my first N64, it cost me $3, so I can't answer this for sure yet. I do remember everyone playing Goldeneye though...
This list begins and ends with Goldeneye. Nothing videogame related will ever beat the thrill of getting three friends together and having a drunken, pistols only, License to Kill marathon.

Actually, I was a big fan of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Perfect Dark as well. But Goldeneye was the alpha and omega.
I love Goldeneye, but nothing will ever beat my love for Pilotwings 64.
Naturally Goldeneye is the best thing to ever happen to the video gaming universe, but I must also agree with the Diddy Kong Racing mention, even if only for the "Icicle Pyramid" map. That level alone makes buying the system and game worthwhile, it's so damn addicting and fun. I could play DK Racing for hours, never changing from Icicle Pyramid once.
Mario Kart was hands down my favourite. So many hours lost playing that one. I even took the time to learn the cheats and beat my friends by jumping the bridge on Rainbow Road and turning around on the one snow map.

And Goldeneye is my second favourite. Duke Nukem: Zero Hour was fun but would never end so I gave up.

That's about it.
People who like Goldeneye better than Perfect Dark are in total denial. Perfect Dark had everything Goldeneye had, but better and much more of it.

Except a good framerate.

That and the Goldeneye stages had better replay value for me. Other than that, you're right. The laptop gun alone makes it a better game.

Castlevania Legacy of Darkness. Still not what it should've been, but a vast improvement over the blandness of Castlevania 64.

Also, Majora's Mask continues to be VERY underrated.
I loved Majora's Mask and me and friends never, ever, got tired of going against a team of Dark Bots on Perfect Dark with Super Dragons, Magnums, Bouncing Grenades and Laptop Guns.

It's a shame that no other multiplayer shoot em up has been able to capture the intensity of that game.

It ended eventually. I loved that game. I never got into the PC Duke games but "Zero Hour" was a complete blast.

"Perfect Dark" was the last cool game I remember playing on the N64 before the PS2 was released and I pretty much let the console collect dust. But it never led to the hours of endless multiplayer mayhem that "Goldeneye" provided me.

The first game that hooked me on the system was "Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey." I never played much of anything during the Super Nintendo/Genesis era so to go from the shitty 8-bit Gretzky game to the N64 game was a real revelation.

Anyone else played Hybrid Heaven? It was this amazing action/fighting/RPG where you learned different moves and battled in real-time 3D arenas. I played the shit out of that one, even though my lack of memory card meant I had to start over at the beginning everytime I played.

That's hardcore right there.
Well GoldenEye was one of the favs but here goes:

WrestleMania/No Mercy
Former wrestling fan. The game was fun.

Mario 64
Umm no explaination

Mortal Kombat Trilogy
While the PS version was better, the ability to have Shang Tsung load anyone without loading made the game better at least for me.

Star Fox 64
Basically the first game I played with rumble.

Superman 64
No wait, this is a lie.

Loved that game. Hard as hell at the end though. It got to the point where I had a leg of doom which could kill most enemies with a well placed kick...and utterly crappy arms.

Yeah, my right leg was to be feared among lizard men everywhere. It certainly wasn't balanced in that regard.
There was an alien ant blasting game I remember having alot of fun with.
Jet Force Gemini. Great game until you beat the main boss for the first time and realise that instead of giving you new levels, they're just going to make you go back to the old ones for fetching quests that were so popular of the platformers of the time (Banjo Kazooie!).
Yeah but Jet Force Gemini allowed you to behead Ewoks with Shruikens.
And keep track of how many ewok heads you collected, true. That's why I still look back at it fondly, even though it had terrible slowdown and a boring second half.
Jet Force Gemini was also hard as fuck.

The N64 had the best Resident Evil 2 port in existence. Never minding that, through black magic, they managed to get FMVs on a cartridge, it had the best graphics, and was the only one to get rid of the tank-tread survival horror controls.

In the same vein, Ridge Racer 64 was the last time that series would ever be good.
I may be the only person in Existence who dug Donkey Kong 64.

It was the rap, it did terrible things to my mind.
Yeah you were.

My burning hatred of fruit/coin/star-collecting fetch quests began right there.
had some friends meet round my house before going out the other day, and this subject came up. from the idea of 'just one quick game, for the nostalgia', it soon degenerated into a game of drinking bond that didn't end until 5 o'clock.

no oddjob!

You have to collect 12 golden bannanas in this level...

NO PROBLEM

You also have to collect 100 yellow bannanas....

...NO...PROBLEM

You also have to collect 100 Purple, Red, and Blue Bannanas....

....THE FUCK....

You also have to find coins...to buy new moves...

.............

Also if you die your progress isn't saved...

One of my extremely rare drinking binges was over Goldeneye. 4 player Man With The Golden Gun, get taken out by the Golden Gun, you take a shot of Jack.

Good times. Least from what I remember past the first 20 minutes.

pretty much the exact game we were playing. payback was a bitch.
I liked Donkey Kong 64 but it got old quicker than it took me to finish the game.

Same with Banjo Kazooie. That also had the world's most annoying sound effects.
Banjo Tooie was kinda neat though.

Anybody here play Body Harvest?
I thought that game was really cool but there was a time limit or something, which really grinded my gears.
I loved DMA design. They did Body Harvest and this cool game where you were on a planet full of Robot Animals and had to possess them....

Then they became ROCKSTAR.
Silicon Valley or something, that animal possesion game. That was fun.

But didn't they also do that completely useless Robotron 64 game?
I've just dug my N64 out, put in Majora's Mask....good god has that aged badly. Vagrant Story on the PS1 looks better than it...
No N64 graphics do, it's always had a problem with really blurry visuals.
It's like a badly made german porno....

and angular too...
And THAT used the expansion pack.
Thread Starter
The expansion pack was expensive. It was around 30 bucks or so.

That's one reason I got DK64 because they gave the pack with the game.
Same. Thank God I did, otherwise I would have had NO Perfect Dark.
I bought the expansion for Shadow Man, which must go down in history as the first and only cartridge based game to have a goddamned load time.
Blast Corps was an awesome game that really needs a modern version. I haven't played in in a long time but I remember is being a, um, blast. Could very well suck now.

DOOM 64 is my favorite version of DOOM, just awesome.

Crow, how were the controls on RE:2 different? I played it on the 64 and loved it(and was also amazed about the FMV), but I can't remember the controls.
Even though the N64 was the beginning of the decline of Nintendo's thrid party support, it truly was a great time to be a video game fan. My friends and I still look back to this era with so much glee.
Now, about the games: Sure Perfect Dark was superior in all ways to Goldeneye, but Goldeneye came out first and come on lets face it, how cool was it to be those characters. I still consider it my all-time favorite game.
Every game mentioned beforehand (minus Donkey Kong 64) was great. I agree that Blast Corps needs to be brought back or something, hopefully it's on the Wii's Virtual Ccnsole or better yet, a new version.
Now, does anyone remember Hexen? Truly fun game, both as multiplayer and story mode.

It wasn't. I didn't give a damn about the characters in either game.

For me, that award goes to the PS1 version (Doom, Doom II, Ultimate Doom, Arch Vile gone, and remixed soundtrack)

The control stick had a true analog option. Down was down, left meant left, etc. It was a godsend.

Play DOOM 64 again man, it's fucking sweet. Blows away DOOM I and II. Also, it has a soundtrack more in line with the Quake games. Spooky ambient stuff, no goofy electronic tunes and riffs. Also there were several parts where 50 enemies would be coming at you at once, something that I really missed with DOOM 3. My only gripe with it is that it was possible to get stuck on a wall(more like hooked) if you were running too close.

Hmn, maybe that's why I loved the shit out of 2 on the 64, and then couldn't get into the remake and zero on 'Cube as much(although I still dug 'em). It had been a while since I played it.

*edited to add more about the DOOM 64 soundtrack.

Burnout has almost the same gleeful destruction thing going on, but I would like to see what could be done with model destruction in Next-Gen systems.
I used to play a lot of Shadows Of The Empire (God help me), and I also loved Rogue Squadron despite its hilarious faults. I always loved the way your pilot character would continue screaming after your ship had crashed/exploded into a million pieces, the way they would have vehicles like the atmosphere-based snowspeeder taking off from the cruiser and flying out into space, and the fact that the people on the ground were two 2-d images intersected like a folded piece of paper. But goddamn was that game fun.
I enjoyed "Rogue Squadron" a lot, except any level that involved deploying the tow cables.
I liked Shadows of the Empire a lot because I was 12.

Rogue Squadron is still good.

In Shadows, I also liked the big canyon level which ended by fighting Boba Fett and the Slave 1. Though, the jetpack took time to get used to control. The second level that took place in Hoth base was cool too. You got to battle wampas and a chicken walker at the end.

For Rogue Squadron, I remember there was another secret code to unlock a Naboo starfighter.
Gall Spaceport was the toughest level of that game. Even harder than the very last.

Me and my friend just dragged out his 64 and NES on Saturday. God, that was great.

San Francisco Rush - The retarded physics, shortcuts, exploration, the hidden underground area, the loop-the-loop, and "What's your name?" God that game was great.

Mission: Impossible - Not all that great, but it consumed plenty of my summer when it came out.

WWF Warzone - Probably outdated now, but the customization options were unparalleled

WCW/NWO Revenge - Not as much customization and not as good graphics, but this killed Warzone in gameplay.
Thread needs more STARFOX. That game was great and one of the first to implement rumble features. Man, that thing shook like hell if you managed to blow up the train station.

I'm going to start up a new run of Ocarina of Time this week on the GC since I never made it past the Water Temple on the N64. Fucking ONE regular key was all I needed and I NEVER found it.
