2006-2007 English Premier League Thread

I thought, seeing how we had a ton of people posting in the WC thread, this might be a good idea, seeing how the season is little under a month away.

It's interesting now, with everything that's happened in Italy (for those who aren't in the know, Lazio, Fiorentina and Juventus have been relegated and Milan have been docked points, all from match-fixing allegations), and it looks like there'll be a huge exodus, with talk already of people like Cannavaro going to Chelsea or Man Utd.

My issue is, what this'll do for the league itself. There's already a huge gulf growing between the top four (Chelsea, Man U, Arsenal, Liverpool) and the rest, and with all these players either going to Spain or here, I fear it will just make the gulf bigger. Hell, Chelsea seem to be buying players willy nilly without even wondering where they'll play - Shaun Wright-Phillips is evidential of this, and I still feel had he played regularly last year, he would have been in the WC squad for sure.

Well, we have our first managerial casualty of the season, and the season hasn't even started yet!

From Sky Sports:

Quote:
David O'Leary has left his position as Aston Villa manager following a lengthy meeting with club directors.

The Irishman was summoned to a meeting at Villa Park to discuss the fall-out of last week's controversial player statement.

A purported statement from the Villa squad, questioning chairman Doug Ellis' ambition, was later dismissed as having no backing from the club's senior players.

Villa launched an inquiry into the matter, which has cast a cloud over the team's pre-season preparations, with reports having suggested O'Leary was involved in the statement.

The club have confirmed there was no evidence to implicate O'Leary in the statement, but have announced an 'amicable parting of the ways'.

"On 17 July 2006, Aston Villa Plc announced that the board of Aston Villa had set up an internal enquiry into the circumstances surrounding the publication of a statement purportedly from the entire first team squad," read a statement on the club's official website.

"That enquiry has completed its investigations. Although no misconduct by the manager, David O'Leary was uncovered, as a result of the investigation, it has been agreed that an amicable parting of the ways was in the best interests of all parties.

"Accordingly, a compensation package reflecting the situation has been established and it has been mutually agreed to terminate the contract of David O'Leary, with immediate effect."
I'd be lying if I said this was a huge surprise. Frankly, I've never liked O'Leary as a manager, and he's been very rude and unbecoming to managers and players in the past, but I think the next person to go should be the real villain of the piece, Ellis. This is the worst thing about football, that managers can come and go at the drop of the hat, but if you have an awful chairman, your club can be fucked for life (see Freddy Shepherd at Newcastle, Rupert Lowe at Southampton).

I will be able to participate more in this thread once I get my digital cable with FSC. Really looking forward to more football talk on the boards though. The World Cup thread was one of my favorites.
Nice move starting this thread Charlie. I don't get to see as much football as I'd like to here (about 1 game a week) but I do read the Beeb's sport stuff all the time. Gotta get my fix somehow!

Are we going to try to keep it EPL only or also the lower divisions? I know I'm nuts but I always have to see how poor old Swindon Town are doing!

And you're right about Ellis. That guy should've gone years ago, most Villa fans I know can't stand the guy.
I'm a newcomer to EPL, and pretty much a casual observer right now, but I'd thought I'd pass this along. It's a pretty funny article from Bill Simmons on ESPN.com about how to choose an EPL team if you are new to the league. I thought you fans would enjoy.

Choosing my EPL Team
Speaking of which, I want to know all y'alls alliegences. I want to know who to torture, who to hate, and who to conmiserate with.

Alot of you are probraly gonna hate me after this, but I'm with Man U.
Just read that piece by Simmons. Outstanding, and the emails are even better.

I've been following the EPL for the better part of a decade, but only through the weekly highlight show shown on MSG/FSC and mags like FourFourTwo. Since I've gotten DSL at home, I do throw on the text updates from Football365 if it's a rare Saturday morning off from work. So I'm a fan, but the very definition of a casual one (which is at odds with the rest of my sports loyalties, to be sure).

But if pressed for a fave, I'll go with an odd choice: Charlton. Simple math, really: Squeeze fan + Down In The Valley being released at the height of my Squeeze fandom + Charlton getting promoted the year I started paying closer attention via the internet = casual fan. Granted, I don't have FSC at home (which I sorely, sorely need), but all the other outlets out there fit the bill.

And on that note, is there a Sky/BBC equivalent of ESPN Radio Gameday available online that covers the action as it happens every Saturday, be it EPL or League/FA Cup games? Sure would beat reading text...

Ade, I figured the Premiership would be the main one, but there's always room for the lower divisions. I think especially now, where the footballing world is ruled by jillionaires, the smaller clubs are forgotten, and it's a shame. Also, I have to get my fix of my hometown club, Boston Utd, in somewhere!

In terms of teams, I'm Newcastle all the way. The chairman sucks and we seem to fail to do anything every year, but I'm devoted to them all the same.

In terms of a radio matchday, BBC Five Live is the one I always listen to. It always has main commentary coverage on a premier league game, plus comprehensive reports from every game in the country.

Thanks, Charlie, much appreciated.
Damn you Brian for that article. I have been laughing out loud the whole time reading it disturbing my wife's reading and coming close to waking up my son.

But, it is giving me an idea of who I might choose as my team. Right now my decision is between Newcastle United (sponsored by a beer and nice, rowdy fans) and the writer's top choice Tottenham Hospur (named after a Shakespeare character [I have an unhealthy love of Shakespeare] and they aren't an obvious pick).

By the way, would love to know why we should cheer for the teams some of yall support.

Just a side note, I had a producer on a film who was a huge Celtic supporter. He used to wear his Celtic gear to work when we were in pre-production.

OK, seems like a good way to stir up some interest as the season goes on. I mentioned earlier that I always look out for Swindon, but I'm a Liverpool fan. A long-suffering one at that, although I can remember the good old days!

Oddly enough, I've had a soft spot for Boston ever since I played with them in an old FIFA game and built them up so much that I won the ECC with them. The fact that that will never happen in real life kind of ruins that love, though.

Anyway, FSC has never been available in Alabama so I've never been able to get into the EPL enough to really get behind any one team. For some strange reason, though, I've always had a soft spot for Aston Villa.

Because Newcastle need all the help we can bloody get!

Although finally, we seem to have signed someone! Damien Duff has agreed a contract, so it's just down to a medical, which is good news as he's a fine player. We just need a new entire back line and two strikers now!
why in hell is damien duff going to the toon? he's a fantastic player, and he's going to a side that'll be lucky to be top eight next season. i'm really surprised man utd didn't come in for him, as they've got to replace giggs sometime.
As soon as I read Duff was off to Newcastle I wondered what you'd make of it, Charlie. But it's taken me ages to get near the PC today & I'm late on it! Good player but you're right, a few more would help.

The papers today have rumours about us maybe signing Klose. That would be a good deal.

Well, we're strengthening the squad. Don't forget, we were plagued with injuries all of last season to so many key players, and that coupled with Souness' dire approach was a big low until Roeder came along and lifted us. I mean, with some of the players we have - Shay Given, the best Goalie in the UK, Scott Parker (who should have been in the WC squad), Emre, Owen, Charles N'Zogbia, Steven Taylor, Solano (in the top 3 all-time Premiership assists, and now Duff - we have a solid base which, while perhaps not challenging for honours, are nevertheless a good base for us to get back to trying to do that. Forgive me if I think saying we'll lucky to be top eight sounds like it's coming from a Spurs fan bitter that Duff didn't go to them.

Would anyone be interested in a fantasy league this season?

actually, i'm a brighton fan, so i'm jealous of any team with a real stadium.

wasn't n'zogbia one on newcastle's best players last year? the duff signing seems harsh on him, particularly as, like you said charlie, you have no defense and no good fit strikers.

oh, and i'd definitely be up for a fantasy league.
I'll go for a fantasy league too. Although I've never done one before so I will no doubt suck at it!!
I'm new to this so I don't have a team yet. I was thinking of going with Man U, I'm a Yankee fan and I understand that Man U are like the Yankees of the EPL.
I'm a fan of both Man Utd and Newcastle. If I were English, I'm sure I would not be allowed to root for both. Since I'm not, I'll enjoy them all!

If we get more than five people interested, I'll start putting a league together, either using the Telegraph or Sun (it's an awful rag but damn does it have a good fantasy league) newspapers.

Also, something for us Magpies to officially celebrate today. And a big surprise: He only cost us five mil!

Charlie you are starting to sway me man. I might have to sign up with Newcastle.

Hey, the emotional rollercoaster is what football is all about.

Of course.
I am a New Orleans Saints fan. I have my heart ripped out of my chest every year. Plus I am a St. Louis Cardinals fan. They did plenty to rip out my heart last season.

Oh and try being a Mississippi State fan and graduate and living in New Orleans and having to deal with LSU kicking the shit out of your team every year.

So yeah, Newcastle might be my type of team. Plus I can get drunk on the team's beer when they lose.
File this post under the subject: FUCKING GREAT! (even though not related to the EPL)

I am heading to Seattle Aug. 9th to see the greatest team on the planet, Real Madrid face D.C. United in an exhibition match. I am so fucking jazzed, man! It's going to be great fun.
As for the fantasy league, after we had a bit of fun with the Yahoo World Cup fantasy game, a buddy of mine set up a league at the EPL's official site. So, I've got that going, and if you want to set up one as well, I'm in for that too.
so jermaine pennant is worth more than damien duff now? jeez. beniitez has certainly put himself in the firing line if things go badly for liverpool this season, with pennant, bellamy and some lesser knowns. of course, he could end up looking like a genius.
I more inclined to think Benitez is a genius, with the power to see into the future. At least, that's the only reason I can think of to explain why he didn't bring Owen back when he had the chance, he KNEW Owen's knee was gonna blow!

Owen

I had a dream we signed someone from West Ham. But I don't think he really exists.
Yikes! I bet the 'Pool aren't too pleased at having to play a Champions League qualifier in Israel! Sod that for a game of soldiers.

Kind of like me and Barnet in FIFA 06. I took that team from League Two to the EPL title, winning everything possible (League Cup, FA Cup, ECC), even going so far as to pull an Arsenal and finish undefeated in the EPL. So, I'll be looking out for their results this season, that's for sure...
I feel a strong urge to adopt Chelsea, but it's just too easy. I am nothing if not a loyal sports fan, and I don't think I can live with myself if I pick my soccer club by the same superficial criteria that I abhorr in American sports bandwagon-jumpers. I like a team with some history, some soul, a team that's not going to have predominately douchebag fans.

I am proud to announce that I think I am going with Liverpool! I'm so excited to watch EPL games this year that I am pissing myself.
i officially give up on trying to figure out a players worth. the carrick move absolutely blows my mind.
I would be up for a fantasy league, but don't have regular internet access at the minute, so probly couldn't do all that transfer mallarkey.

Charlie - what're your thoughts on the Luque situation? I reckon he's a good player who needs time to adapt, but if we sign another striker it'll be the new fella and Ameobi, no questions.

I reckon we've got too many potential starting midfielders to need to sign Gravesen, I've never understood the midfielder overload/defensive defecit tactic at Newcastle.
Thread Starter
I think Luque is a guy that has talent, but I see him more as a winger than a striker. But he's done well in pre-season up front, so he could change my mind easily. I think we need two more strikers, cause with Owen out for the rest of the year and Chopra gone, we desperately need the cover, and I've never been convinced that Ameobi is going to be a 20-a-season goalscorer. We've never done as well as we did when we had Ferdinand and Shearer up front, so I'd like us to find two players like that, obviously not an easy task, but two strikers that can play together and that can supply us with forty or fifty goals a season.

In terms of our midfield, I'm unsure. I think Parker and Emre should be the central midfield, but I'm also not totally convinced by Emre as a playmaker. I can see Roeder playing 4-5-1 if he does buy Gravesen, but I think we do need the strength in depth, and I don't rate Butt and Amdy Faye at all. But I agree that we should go for defenders and strikers before any more midfielders.

It's also desperately clear that we need to sort out this injury deal. While I couldn't stand Souness, we underachieved so much last season due to players being out, and while Roeder did a great job - although I'm not 100% convinced he should be in the manager's chair - his run came at a time when we started to get players back.

I'm going to assume that these preseason friendlies are as frivolous as the NFL preseason, and that I shouldn't be alarmed that my Reds are getting their collective vagina handed to them weekly.
So Martin O' Neill is the new boss at Villa. Finally some good news for their fans, all they need now is for Ellis to disappear.

Incredible. Anybody got the Over/Under on how many red cards Rooney sees this year? Kid better calm down.

Yeah, they're just to get players match-fit again and ready for the season. I shouldn't read too much into them. It's also notable that they're playing teams they wouldn't usually play - unless they come up in European competitions - for example, Liverpool played Kaiserslauten, Newcastle played PSV and have Villareal tomorrow.

Although it was still funny to see Man U get beaten by Preston.

I think Rooney will stand more chance with the ref's once he stops getting in their faces all the time. Interesting to see Fergie defending Rooney but not Scholes. Honesty on Fergies part for once or just playing the odds?

It's hard to say, to be honest, although Fergie seems to be losing the plot a bit in recent times, especially with Van Nistelrooy. Losing your best striker like that, especially for the price he went for - and especially compared to how much Carrick cost - doesn't really indicate the best bit of business, either financially or for the benefit of the squad.
Yep, the Van Nistelrooy saga is very bizarre. I know Fergie likes to rule with an iron fist but that was a joke. It could well be the downfall of Sir Alex.

And Charlie, posting the score for posterity....very nice indeed!

Listening to Five Live right now. Even though it's just Leeds-Norwich, this is great. Having not listened to the BBC before, I am impressed with the rapid-fire commentary style (seems a little faster than what I'm used to in the US). This is a great way to spend a morning!

And since I've got next Saturday off, I can do this again...

Silly question of the day: does Five Live cover the promotion playoffs in May?

Five Live is brilliant. And yes, they do cover all of the playoff games.

Heads up for US based fans, ESPN is showing the MLS All Stars vs Chelsea game at 6:30pm EDT today. Could be an interesting game.
