And the MLS beat them 1-0. I only caught the end and I would think Chelsea didn't play hard in the first half, but after the MLS scored Chelsea looks like they wanted to score.

Sounds like MLS had the conditioning edge but still a good win. And I hate Freddy Adu. He hasn't done shit in MLS and I've heard him interviewed that he wants to go to Europe to play. Not good enough yet and I don't believe he's only 17.

I'm worried Roeder will go for 4-5-1 too. Newcastle really need to be playing 2 strikers when their main striker is as inconsistent and frustrating as Ameobi.

I think N'Zogbia and Milner could get phased out, or end up playing off Ameobi in the old "oh shit, we've loads of injuries, let's put Dyer behind Shearer" position. This would be a shame, as they're both great players, and Milner clearly wants to be playing regular football.

The injury problems need to be sorted, possibly by going the Sam Allardyce route and bringing in more technical training facilities.

Charlie - what are your thoughts on defenders then? I liked the idea of Gareth Barry, simply because he's versatile and fairly consistent, and seems a decent enough guy - but I don't see him leaving now O'Neill's arrived.

I think we need an experienced, influential centre back to control the defence and give Taylor and Bramble the benefit of his experience (and a bit more competition.) Craig Moore's good, but he hasn't got the gravitas or the depth of experience.

I think Gravesen's the last thing we need if he's getting involved in fights with teammates. Roeder's riding a wave of goodwill, but I don't know what he's like in terms disciplining players, and further scandal/disarray could be his undoing.

Barry is a good player, and I wouldn't mind seeing him at St James. I'm still hoping Roder will change his mind about Sol Campbell - I think he could be the person to build a newer, tougher defence around.

As for Gravesen, he's definitely a wildcard. But I see him in the same light as David Batty, who I thought did enormously well for for Newcastle. I feel we need the team to develop a bit more of a hunger and aggressiveness. I mean, look at England's two most recently successful teams - Man U and Arsenal - both of which during their success periods were marshalled by two players that were often sent off and getting into fights with all sorts of people, Keane and Viera. I think we need someone with that energy and aggressiveness to really push the team forward.

Well it didn't sound like the most convincing performance but I'm glad to see Liverpool got the first leg win in the CL against Maccabi Haifa. Hopefully they can build on this & get those dreadful warm-up games out of their minds & make a good start to the EPL season.

I was looking at the football message boards on the BBC site earlier. Jesus, the way people act on there is unbelievable. Makes the worst of the CHUD boards look like something the Pope would endorse!

Well, I saw Real on Wednesday. It's preseason, but it was fun. Beckham had some good passes, but looked pooped by halftime. I know he's coming off injury, but even through the World Cup it looked like his stamina was missing. Ruud missed some great chances as well. DC United actually held their own, but again, they are in mid-season form.

I hearby proclaim: AMERICAN SOCCER CROWDS ARE FUCKING BORING!

Charlie, I just saw your Man U post. Fuck. I'll see you Sept. 30th.
Whoa. Newcastle going for Martins from Inter and Wayne Bridge.

Clever moves. Though a strong centre back is probably more important right now.
Impressive win yesterday for the Reds! Momo Sissoko is an absolute beast.

I never thought I'd ever be jealous of Villa, but now they have some crazy American billionaire and Martin O'Neill, and we have Freddy Shepherd and Glenn "I'm going to buy players, honest", I'm green with envy.
Hope he does a better job running Villa than he has the Browns...
dean ashton breaking his ankle the day before his first england cap may put west ham in a spot of trouble, because there's no way marlon harewood scores as many as he did last season.
i see the FA have upheld the three-game bans for scholes and rooney. considering how much they rely on the boy wonder, united could be struggling to get into contention early.
Every season I hope United will finally capitulate, and every season I'm disappointed. The only thing comforting me is that United's stranglehold on a top four position is keeping Spurs out of the Champions League (Jesus, I'm bitter)
Edit: Nevermind
So the big kick-off is one day away. Everybody ready for it? Any predictions for your teams' games? I'm going with a 3-0 win for the 'Pool over the blades. That'd be a nice start to the season.

I'm scared we'll lose 1-0, but I'm going to say we'll win 2-1.

I think you'll get the win. Mind you, I have a terrible record at predicting scores. My 3-0 for Liverpool will probably be way off as well!

Well, it's been an interesting morning. I hop online around 9:30, go to the Five Live website and prepare for some Premiership action.

"Due to contractual obligations, we are unable to air the program currently on Five Live.' Wonderful. Looks like the US isn't the only nation who has media blackouts in place. Not only can I not listen to Five Live during their Premiership coverage, Sirius has the US broadcast rights and you have to register to listen online.

There is a happy ending though, even though I did have to download RealPlayer. I'm listening to BBC London's coverage of West Ham-Charlton (well, if I say I'm a fan, I might as well go all in), and I assume that most of the BBC satellite stations aren't under the same restrictions. Sounds like I came in at the wrong time, though...
I bet you're far happier than me, Charlie. At least I was right in saying my score predictions suck! 1-1 is not too impressive at all. Still, I did smile at seeing Swindon continue their 100% record.

The combination of the shitty new lemon-yellow away strips and the presence of Sean Bean supporting the Blades proved too much for the Reds to overcome.

That, along with some truly fucking baffling lineup decisions. I suppose Rafa's trying to keep some legs fresh for the Champions League game next week, but Christ. Will someone please take Kromkamp off our hands?
You were'nt kidding about the away strip. I saw some pics earlier & felt quite ill. Those have got to go!

Even if the ban was harsh I'm getting the impression that Rooney just doesn't know when to shut the fuck up!

I read a few days ago that his dream is to captain the England team. I think he has a lot of growing up to do before that ever happens.

2-1, hooray! A win and a correct score prediction!

Don't worry Ade, I'm sure Liverpool will make amends in their next game.
Sad to see Man U & Chelsea do so well today, I hope they're not going to get a big head-start over everyone else. I did have to smile at this pic on the BBC site though.

So, best buddies again or is Rooney contemplating a headbutt? Could make for a good caption contest. I'll go with "Wink NOW, motherfucker!"
Woo-hoo! Way to go, 'Boro!! Helluva nice result for them after losing the opening day game.
Yay! First EPL win for Liverpool today. I hope they're gonna go on a roll now & try to catch Man U, at least they've had a better start than Chelski!

Speaking of being on a roll, Swindon Town's 100% start to the season continues, damn that makes me happy. I just hope they don't return to their old tricks of starting well then blowing out around Christmas time!
I didn't want to start a thread for the Euro 2008 qualifiers so I thought I'd use this one for England's games.

Just wanted to say I'm glad to see England crushed the mighty Andorra in their first game. 5-0 as well! Impressive!

I went skiing in Andorra years ago & to be honest I'm amazed they can find enough flat ground to play football! Maybe that's the trick, look out England on the return fixture!
A pretty crappy day for me. Liverpool get caned 3-0 by Everton & Swindon's 100% start to the season comes to an end. Ugh.
Shit. What happened, Ade? That was an ass whuppin'. They better shape up before tuesday.

Man U, ridin' high. Not much to say on that front.
Juan, I wish I knew what happened. From what I read it sounded like Everton just had more will to win than the 'Pool did. God knows they're not looking too convincing in the EPL right now.
I guess a 0-0 tie against PSV Eindhoven is an improvement over Saturday's game, plus it was an away game for Liverpool so that helps. Problem is as much as I love seeing them do well in Europe nothing would make me happier than seeing them win the EPL. That looks like wishful thinking right now!
Wow! The ref really gifted us with the penalty on Giggs. Christ, that was awful. But anyways, good show by Celtic, they put up a fight. That goal by Nakamura was incredible. Beckham'esque you might say. Although, if the wall would try to block the fucking ball, it wouldn't have been much.

Officially, the ass of all Madrid fans has the seal of Lyon. Those fuckers have our number. Shit.
An away win for Newcastle in the UEFA Cup. Shame Charlie's no longer around to share his pleasure at that one.
Dear God, what a start to the season Liverpool are having. I really expected better from them this year. At least Man U lost as well so there's something to cheer me up a little, but only a little.
i'm guessing charlie is a happy man today.

i thought man u were atrocious today, and its still the midfield that will cost them. you cannot win the prem with john o'shea starting in the middle of the park.
That fucking sucks. God damn Arsenal.
Liverpool v Newcastle tomorrow. Wherever Charlie is, sorry but I hope your lot lose this one!
Yay! A 2-0 win for the 'Pool! Hopefully they can build on that now.
xabi alonso, from his own half, again!
That was a great fucking goal. Incredible.

Thanks for that link Juan, first time I've seen the goal. Impressive but you can't help wondering what the goalie was thinking to miss that. I know he slipped but it does make him look like an ass!
chelsea back on top. ho-hum.
Pretty happy with today's results, a 3-0 win against Spurs for Liverpool & Man U scrape a draw with Reading!

And in a totally different sport but I'm so pleased I just have to mention it, my old cricket team Worcestershire pull off a hell of a win to clinch promotion to Division One in the County Championship!

All in all, lots to smile about.

Ugh, just knew that would be a double post when the damn thing froze up on me!
Nervous end to Liverpool's CL game against Galatasary. Never nice to be 3-0 up then see 2 goals scored! I was hoping ESPN would show this one today but no, it had to be Chelsea. Bollocks.
if you guys want to watch a lot of the games, this service is pretty good. No Monthly fee. No Yearly fee. Its 1 time payment only for lifetime membership.
Dammit, another bloody loss! WTF is going on with Liverpool? Just a few weeks into the season & it already looks like we're fucked. No consistency whatsobloodyever.
Could be worse, Ade. Your team could be relegation material at this point.

Not been a good day footy-wise. Charlton lose again (to be fair, the schedule hasn't been kind, but no real complaining from me). Plus my hometown club lost the USL First Division (the American attempt at a second division, but with none of the money that's keeping MLS afloat) final at home, too.

Figures the year I actually start paying more than cursory attention to Charlton is the year they find themselves in the dumps. (Irony note: the two games they've won I missed listening to because of work.)

Oh, sort of related: why is it I can't find a US-based website offering replica shirts (with official name/numbering options)? I would go through the official shop, but I fear the shipping costs...

There's no need to pay to watch live games online! It really annoys me when people give these scummers their money! Stop being such bloody mugs!
