Clive Barker's Jericho

Having heard much about this game, but this dude looks pretty wicked.

From IGN: "A supernatural horror action game with a story devised by the master mythmaker, novelist and filmmaker Clive Barker. Mingling the darkest elements of Barker's horror fiction and films, Jericho deals with the mysterious reappearance of a lost city in a remote desert. When a form of evil that goes right back to the dawn of days resurfaces from there, a Special Forces squad, trained in both conventional warfare and the arcane arts, is sent in. Their mission: hunt down and destroy the evil that lurks at the heart of the city before it destroys humanity."

I was with it right up until "a Special Forces squad". Ugh. Is "a Special Forces squad with paranormal talents" becoming a new genre or something?

I loved Undying and thought that a lot of the contributions Barker made were very important (although it always bears mentioning that a large chunk of the game was written and designed by the other guys on the team too). And the possibilities of "a lost city in a remote desert", even just from a graphics standpoint, are very interesting. But the whole Delta Ouija Force angle hurts.

Demo due out this week.

Quote:
Codemasters confirmed to GameSpot today that a PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 demo for Clive Barker's Jericho would be getting under gamers' skin this week. The PC demo will creep onto GameSpot Wednesday, with an Xbox Live and PlayStation Network trial slated to follow on Thursday.
Just so you know, that article has a bit of spoiler a little further down.

Unless this demo just blows me away, it's going to have to wait in a very long line.

I enjoyed the demo. The ability to move between the squad and use their abilities brings in a nice tactical component without preventing basic twitch gaming.

I'll pay attention to the full reviews, if nothing else.

I'm interested in this one, but the demo didn't do much for me. Course, doesn't help that they throw you into the middle of the game- I'm hoping there's some more buildup and scary sequences, cause this wasn't anything too creepy as it was.

Still, I like the mechanics of it. Being able to switch characters on the fly is a neat trick.

I feel that the demo was competent. The game looked good to me, it controlled fine, and I liked being able to swap characters. Giving each playable character some unique abilities is a nice feature, will mix up the gameplay nicely, I think.

I only own a 360, but certainly no shortage of FPS for that system. For the rest of this year's FPS releases, I have Jericho ranked behind Call of Duty 4 and Half-Life 2. Those two games will be "must-haves" for me. In order for Jericho to be at that level, it will have to have to deliver on scares and creepy atmosphere.

This could very well be a good game, but I just am not a fan of the environment. That said, if I get a Christmas gift that I decide to take back, I would certainly consider picking this up then.

The concept of Jericho works for me. Horror FPSs are a dime a dozen, but Barker's pedigree and the basic concept (spelled out right about "Start Demo") was really intruiging. It's right in my wheelhouse of religious horror.

I've heard there are different levels beyond "scary caves", so if the review give it a decent score, I am in. The developers stated this is NOT intended for multiplayer, so they have a 15 hour SP game experience with a great story. That's clearly up to the customer, but I appreciate the concept.

If it gets a bunch of 6's, I'll wait. If it avergaes above 8 or gets a few raves, then I might go full price.

I'm not saying the demo was great, but it showed promise

I loved the look and the atmosphere of the demo.I don't really like the special forces thing and having a squad makes it less scary. But the gameplay was pretty fun.

I probably won't pick it up when it comes out unless it gets 9's across the board. It's a game I'll pick up sooner or later just because I'm a big fan of Undying, and having recently, finally read the hell bound heart, I'd be up for some decent clive barker gaming.

I wish my computer could run this.
I really liked Undying, after all, and if this has anything of the same quality to it...
Plus, I'm all in favour of getting names like Barker on board more projects.

I thought the demo was short but decent.

I don't expect this to be the next Halo/Gears Of War, but I hope it turns out to be a nice surprise.

Ditto on the Undying love. God, one of the great games no-one ever played.

Comparing this demo to a good movie trailer, I think it was very successful. It didn't show you much, but the slick controls and great graphics whetted the appetite. Like 782 mentioned, I've got to think the levels are quite a bit more varied than "wet cave that gives us an excuse to perpetuate the awful trend of applying 'next-gen' sheen to every fucking polygon." It seems the entire game is confined to the single city, though, which is actually kind of cool.

I've given up on thinking the game will be genuinely scary. I'm satisfied with "shoot the hell out of effed-up Clive Barker monsters" as a backup option, though, and the central conceit regarding the Super-Evil Reappearing City is meaty enough. I think the game will be more enjoyable if approached with a Retarded '80s Action Movie mindset. I mean, there's seriously a character who can evidently warp reality because she wears a computer and is really good at math.
