Madden 07 Goes Pay-Per-View

In an apparent outreach to the most hardcore Madden players, Electronic Arts, ESPN and ESPN.com will offer a pay-per-view behind-the-scenes look at Madden NFL 07.

There is rarely a franchise big enough to warrant its own pay-per-view special, but EA thinks the upcoming Madden NFL 07 deserves some special coverage for the most serious fans of the series.

The 60-minute special, titled “Inside Madden NFL 07,“ will feature the game’s designers, as well as five top Madden players who will reveal player ratings, gaming tips and other behind-the-scenes goodies.

Top athletes will also make appearances, including the Atlanta Falcons' Warrick Dunn, Tennessee Titans’ Eddie George, Minnesota Vikings guard Steve Hutchinson, and St. Louis Rams running back Marshall Faulk.

The episode, airing August 4, will be available for $19.95 at ESPN.com or through pay-per-view service providers. Madden NFL 07 will hit shelves August 22.

In January 2005, EA signed an agreement with ESPN which would allow access to the network’s personalities and programming. Sega and developer Visual Concepts utilized the ESPN license prior to that.

Wow.

Who's gonna be stupid enough to purchase this?
and
Who's gonna get it off YouTube the very next day for free?

Don't see why not. They're dumb enough to buy the game every year, after all.
There'll be enough people willing to pay $20 to watch a glorified ad, so expect to see them do this next year too.

Me? I'd rather put the $20 towards the game.

This is no more stupid than the people who'll plop down the extra $10 for a spiffy looking case and an extra DVD worth of "features" that no one ever watches for more than 30 seconds.

But they have new features like an updated roster!

That at least had an old-school Madden on it (Though not as heralded as the old NHL games, to each his own). There are a lot of stupid people that play Madden, but they're pretty casual gamers, so this will just be something to scoff at.

As for Crow's comment on people being dumb for buying it every year. I agree somewhat. I only buy the game if there's some gameplay feature that might interest me or the ability to have the rosters updated. There just isn't enough there to warrant a purchase every year (I normally wait a month or two when the price drops 20 in a weekly special).

ESPN 2K5 is better than anything EA will ever release.

I don't even plan on spending the $50 for the game, let alone an additional $20 for this. I'll do like last year and rent it, then wait and buy a used copy. I've weaned myself back a year, so I'll pick up Madden '06 now for $10 when '07 comes out. I'm already somewhat regretting my NCAA '07 purchase after having played it for just 3-4 days.
Really? I just (successfully) exchanged my buggy NCAA for PSP for the PS2 version and I think it's better than last years. Easier to run, not a ridiculous amount of picks, etc.
I may be scarred over my first game still. I played another game and had more agreeable results. I've been spending a bunch of time re-naming rosters. I don't like to get started on a season until I've got most of the names set, because I hate seeing records set like "HB #23 from Texas" on the game.

My family has gone out of town for the week, so I may get some serious play time in and it may change my opinion.

I'm surprised (well...maybe not really) that EA just didn't throw this on the shinier limited edition of the game.
Limited editions = ass.

Game companys are just testing to see how much people will pay for a game. The successful launches of Halo 2 Limited Edition, Doom 3 (PC), among others proved they could charge more for games.

1 generation later games are now 59.99, special editons (Prey on 360 for example) are 69.99.....another test.

1 reason why we discourage customers from buying them...besides them usually being a waste of $.

Boycotting EA's bullshit makes your gaming life so much easier and better, trust me.

I don't even miss football games anymore.

Fuck 'em.

If Burnout didn't have their logo on it, i'd be right there with you.
Oh, I admit... there are times when I am completely torn and it's hard to look away ("Burnout", 'Battlefield 2", etc) but I simply cannot support that company in any way. They are flat-out shitting on the business and too many gamers are willing and complicit accomplices.

I was a fan of C&C: Generals, a serie that they bought and butchered like only EA can. They released patches after patches ( read: 4-5 ) that unbalanced the game, allowed some cheats, and then stopped support. I wanted to boycott the fuckers until BF2 came along. Quake Wars could be a suitable alternative to stop giving away money to these bastards.
Any company as big as EA is going to have fuck-ups, but they make some great stuff, too. I don't think a complete boycott is the way to go, but rather, just buy their good games. Your heart's in the right place, Carl, but you're just pissing in the ocean. EA is going to be around, so you may as well enjoy the good shit they put out.

And to those of you who still buy Madden every fucking year for updated rosters and a new option in franchise mode...FUCKING STOP ALREADY. EA isn't killing the industry, the people who are stupid with their money are. Why would EA spend a shitload more money to improve a game year to year when it really wouldn't matter for the sales? You're asking them to simply piss money away.
I agree 100% with everything you just said, GFC... including the quip about me "pissing in the ocean". I completely admit to that I am fully aware that my own personal boycott doesn't affect EA in the slightest. I'm just stubbornly sticking to my guns because I finally had it with that fucking company and its sheepish acolytes (most of which aren't even what you would call real gamers).
That's why the whole thing is pointless. There are so many people out there who are only sports gamers, and they feed into this cycle of shit.

Look at the Wii, for instance. People have complained about a lack of innovation from EA and when they do try something very different you only hear about how stupid they'll look flicking a controller rather than merely pressing a button, or even better - 'those are shitty graphics'. Sadly, most gamers just aren't looking for gameplay innovation but just want updated playbooks to run the latest iteration of Ron Turner's powerful Bears offense.

It's awesome how with every release of a 100-200 meg patch they release for BF2 - the game continues to be broken in some form or another. Even more hilarious the recent patch that implements vehicle drops ramps up the games default requirement of only needing 1 gig of ram to you needing 2 gigs to have it play smoothly.

I am staying the F away from 2142 this fall.

Looking through my collection since ending my futile EA boycott...only thing I've consciously bought from them is Burnout 4 for the 360.

I agree with you there. The game is a complete mess. Sure is fun, but it's so poorly handled by EA.

Wanna know where they got the idea of a vehicule drop ?

Quake Wars, which is still unreleased. ( And has my money so far)

I'm talking about CONSTANT fuck-ups for many games ( PC ). BF2 is a bugfest. They'll try to do something about it then proceed to the next cashcow when it's not profitable, and so on.

I may not be a big Warcraft fan, but Blizzard is a shining exemple of support. Even if they sometime fuck up, they'll do something about it.
