The Dark Sky Texas Chainsaw dvd..

Can you say giddy? Just received The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2-disc set by Dark Sky that I wrote about here- this thing looks beautiful.

Man, can't wait to get home and check out these docs.

Btw- cover is beautiful as well- painting of leatherface dancing with the chainsaw with the sun setting behind him.

THE SHOCKING TRUTH doc is outstanding, and worth the price of the set alone. It was on the special edition that we got over here in the Uck a few years ago.

Now I can finally add this film to my collection (no, you're not the only one, Alex!).

Is it anamorphic this time?
is the new transfer any good? be sure to up date the post with details, as im seriously considering buying this.

Yes, it is anamorphic.

El Thain- haven't checked it out yet- just got it at work. It's times like this I regret not having a portable dvd player...

I'll let you guys know how everything when I get home.

Also received Eaten Alive, which I'm interested in finally checking out...

Did you get a preview copy, or is it out right now?

Preview copy.

It's not hitting till September 26th. :P

I have one as well - interested in seeing how good the transfer is...

Ok, so this transfer is beautiful. It's a little muddled during a few scenes but honestly it's the best I've ever seen the movie. Except for that damn "FOR SCREENING PURPOSES ONLY" tag at the bottom...grr...

Haven't had a chance to check out the extras, but this is definitely the best Texas disc out there. It might be a little too clean- something about watching a scratchy vhs copy of it that made it feel even creepier- like you're not supposed to be watching it.

This is the cover- I dig it.

That's a pretty god. Just enough of the old and the new.

The image itself is good, but the text is pretty generic "edgy" and there's too much space in the banner across the top. But it's nay bad.

That's why I want to wait to see if I can secure a VHS of Cannibal Holocaust before I settle for DVD.

Sweet Ass cover. This and the TCM 2 dvd's are going to be must-haves for me.

Just noticed this typo. I think I'll let it stand.

I didn't even think it was a typo.

Too true, my friend. What a great doc. Same can't be said of the new one ""Flesh Wounds" that was created for this set, but there's some decent bits to it- most notably an interview with Daniel Pearl.

But man, this is the set to own. I should hopefully have a review up this week...
The picture. It's a restored image and it's anamorphic. The old release had the wrong master used (instead of the brand new master they had created for the laserdisc they used a different one).

Not owning the original, this one is a No brainer, but I actually prefer the old box art.
How many releases of this film are there now?
So, I'm just plain confused:

I currently have the 2003 release of the DVD with the ground up hamburger meat on the back of the hard plastic case. Its one disc, its from Pioneer, and I THOUGHT it was a brand new transfer, especially with the obvious differences in blacks/color saturation. Its marked as a Special Edition release.

I thought this was different from the previous edition from Pioneer that everyone said was awful. Are they actually the same transfer? If so, then I will DEFINITELY be buying this new one . . . if not, and the one I have actually is a recent, good transfer of the film, then I probably won't get it again.

Please help!

I think the original dvd release's cover was some altered version of this poster, without the "What will be left of them?" tagline. I'm a huge fan of vintage painted movie posters, and this is one of my favorite.

heh.... the guy from the TCM tour emailed me.

Alex,

I just read your review of the new TCM DVD set.

http://creature-corner.com/?type=reviews&id=1634

And I have a question for you.

If you were to drive a couple of TCM fans around in your truck for 8
hours a day, for two days, using up your entire weekend, and pay for
the gas for about a 350 mile trip, what would you charge? What do you
think would be appropriate compensation for sacrificing an entire
weekend from your family, the drive time and gas expenditures? Let
alone buying your food for yourself on the road as well? Just curious.

Thanks,

Tim...
Cause....yeah, $450 is a perfectly acceptable amount of money for a 2 day tour to places that won't allow you in.

Does anyone get this? People confuse me.... I just don't see the point of taking pictures of the outsides of houses that were in a movie 30 years ago.

Both previous Pioneer editions are the same transfer.

This'll be the DVD of the year for me. I like that you admitted defeat at the front of the article re: being unable to properly convey the greatness of this film. I listen to kids (i.e., anyone younger than me) call this "slow and boring", and I want to euthanize them.

Eh, I've driven down the street off Sunset in Hollywood where the Shape killed the babysitters in Halloween...I've stolen chunks of broken steps from the end of The Exorcist in Georgetown...even pulled off the PA turnpike to check out the Dawn of the Dead mall...so I "get" it. But I'd google map that shit and drive my own ass out to those sites. I don't blame him for charging, I blame shitheads for paying.

Thanks for the review. I don't have any DVD copies of TCM, so I'll be picking this one up.

As for the tour guy--why don't you ask him who is holding the chainsaw to his head to do the tour? I would think you'd do something like that either out of the love for the movie, or by the request of so many people. If you don't like driving around all day and "sacrificing an entire weekend from your family", then don't fucking do it anymore. Does the $250 include a candy bar like on Kramer's Reality Tour?

My new favorite phrase is, "Don't tell me your problems--I've got my own." I would send that back to him.
Reminds me of the tour from Tremors.

*edited because I don't need to tell you that Tremors is a movie*
post #28 of 29
I have the Pioneer version that was released a year or so ago but I think I'll be picking this up as well.

And put me in the camp of people who do enjoy the Movie Tours, but would MUCH rather do it myself with a few friends, as opposed to paying a schmuck to drive me around.

Nice review, Alex. Great to hear that this one lives up to its potential. I'll be picking up a copy when it hits the streets.

Can we expect a review of Part II?
