Final Fantasy

Not the shitty Japanese RPGs but the solo work from touring member of the Arcade Fire Owen Pallet. As you can hear from the song linked above he's largely violin focused and yet somehow he brings the spirit of the Arcade Fire with him. The album itself is wonderful, reminding me at times of Revolver by the Beatles, a mixture of folk, prog rock, mixed with an almost punkish sensibility at times. The only problem is buying a CD by 'Final Fantasy' in a record store. Any one else heard anything by him because with this and the Bell Orchestre I think the offshoots of the Arcade Fire are almost as impressive as the band themselves.

I really like Final Fantasy(and I don't like AF). And the new album name is simply...glorious.

The first Final Fantasy album, Has a Good Home!, was excellent, while the new one still hasn't really grabbed me. There's just nothing on it that stuck out immediately, like This Is the Dream of Win and Régine or The CN Tower Belongs to the Dead, which were the highlights of Has a Good Home. I still like it lots, but it's taking its sweet time becoming something special.

Seeing Pallet playing a live show on his own is really amazing. He has a loop box, and he'll just keep adding the layers to his songs, while the previous stuff gets repeated by the loop box.

I'm seeing him play on 23rd October. So of course I'm massively excited. Orange, a phone company, seem to have picked him up for their adverts.

They had Jose Gonzalez at the beginning of the year.

I really, really, like He Poos Clouds. It is such an incredible evolution in terms of writing and orchestration. While Has A Good Home was essentially an album of light but very good pop songs He Poos Clouds has a drive and purpose which makes it epic at times. Song Song Song is essentially a song evolving as you listen to it. And This Lamb Sells Condos is one of my favourite protest songs at the moment.

If anyone's interested you can find my review of one of his gigs last year, here.

Word down the wire is that he's currently working on some new songs, some which he was trying out in the later part of his tour and is hoping to increase the scope of his sound.
