Best Uniforms?

Topic on a radio show today; just kicking it around, I figure top 5 gives everyone plenty of wiggle room:

NY Yankees home whites: THE classic baseball uniform; tradition, looks good under any circumstance, etc etc

Boston Bruins up to about 2000 - black, yellow and white stripes on the bottom, and that "B" logo should be marketed much better than it is; very strong, clean design

Indianapolis Colts home blues - nice solid blue - not too sissy/pastel a color; simple logo that conveys the team name; black hightops - just old school and tough

Chicago Bears - notch below the Colts, but still, old school and the navy-and-orange are just a great combo

Harlem Globetrotters - the whole flag thing can look VERY stupid; these don't

I agree with the Yankees Home at #1, but after that it's the blue and silver of the Dallas Cowboys. And that's where the list can end for me.

List was in no particular order.

I'd have to put Dallas at #1, but the Yankees definitely have the best uniform in all of baseball.

Gotta agree with everyone that the Yanks uniform is the best in baseball, regardless of how much I hate them. I'll give an honorable mention to the Cubs for doing the same thing the globetrotters did, in having the flag colors and not making it look stupid.

But at the very top of my list lies Penn State's football uniforms. The simplicity of those uniforms is just fantastic.

The Chargers powder blue jerseys have always been considered the cream of the crop from the NFL. Whenever they pole the players on their favorite jerseys, nowadays it's always the Raiders and Bucs 1 and 2.

Big fan of those duds from Turn Ahead The Clock promotion a few years ago.

Chicago Blackhawks-shitty team, great jersey.
Notre Dame and Colorado State have always had my favorite unis. For worst on college football, I think we'd agree any of those Nike-designed abominations would work.

Montreal Canadiens. you can't beat Red, White and Blue, Canada or not.

Also the new Buffalo Sabres uniforms, which were unveiled last week. I don't know why there is such an uproar over it. I think it looks tremendous.

My team. My thoughts.

Yankees are number one, though.

I was gonna mention those, too. Also glad to see some love for the SPEED BLUE of the Indy Colts.

More favorites of mine:

- Green Bay...striking and timeless.
- New Jersey Devils
- Boston Celtics
- Indiana U basketball (especially including the pinstripe warmup pants)
- Texas Longhorns football all-whites

and although I'm new to the sport, I must say that Liverpool FC's new home kits are astonishingly sexy.

Not the BUFFASLUG.
Alabama Crimson Tide home jersey...simple, effective, awesome.
Not that I don't think some of the above are great uniforms, but the majoirty of uniforms listed are from teams that are in the posters home state. Thus leading me to think that a lot of you are just puttign your favoite teams downs.

I love the simple White/Orange of the Browns, but I would never claim them to be great.

I gotta agree (as much a I hate them), that Yankee's "whites" are great.

Slug-looking or no slug-looking, it works for me. I DO know I am in the minority, but I really don't see THAT big a deal. I did feel the same way about the New York Islanders "Fisherman" logo, though. It was fresh and creative.

I think it's cool that the Yankees road jersey's have never displayed the name of the player.

And the new Islander logo is a huge improvement.

I can't get my head around why they'd simply go back to the OLD logo, instead of trying something new. There are worse logos. Cough*BlueJackets*Cough.

That's because they're terrible. Simplicity isn't always the answer, especially when you use vomit-orange.

The best NFL unis are the Jets white jerseys. The Blackhawks reds are the best in the NHL, Knicks blues in the NBA and most MLB pinstripes are great (Diamondbacks and Rockies are the exceptions).

The old Tampa Bay Bucaneers logo was swishy, gay pirate long before Capt. Jack Sparrow was a glint in Johnny Depp's eye.

Gay mascots are indeed a plus, which is why the USC Trojan is so great.

EDIT: Traveler is the horse, stupid.
The Gorton's Fisherman logo for the Isle never really bugged me.

I greatly would prefer any of these, but it's not my team so, I ultimately don't care.

It may be the sentimental attachement, but I do love the Note:

I'm still fairly underwhelmed by our current jerseys.

I've been known to spend way too much time at NHL Uniforms, but I'm unbelievable gay for hockey jerseys.

Vancouver Canucks home sweater, circa 82-83. Worst.
You have no idea how bad I've wanted that jersey.

It's a whole other kind of ugly than the Ducks Wild Wing alt. There's just something so assured about it. Someone really thought it was a fucking great design.

Pirates are uber-cool right now. And Pittburgh's aptly-named MLB franchise would do well to catch up to this.
I 'll cheat a bit and say all of the NHL original 6 teams have some of snazziest uniforms ever with the caveat that the rangers must be the shield and not those goofy lookin statue of liberty jerseys. Powder blue San Deigo Chargers (though the regular ones aren't that bad. Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers (I really dig the standard on one side of the helmet) Detroit Tigers Home whites with the singular olde english D on the breast.
Call me a homer, but the Bucs uniforms are damn sharp, and that flag logo is just a great piece of design because it looks good on damn near anything. If I had to pick another NFL uniform, I'd probably go with the Vikings. I love the way that purple color contrasts with the bright white pants, and the helmet is perfect.

Baseball and basketball uniforms don't excite me all that much, because they're usually so non-descript -- team/city name and a number. They all tend to look the same. I'm not at all happy with this habit of baseball players wearing pants almost down to the ground though -- it just makes them look sloppy.

And what the hell are the Sabres thinking? Not only was the old color scheme better, but that angry buffalo was awesome. Hell, even the buffalo with the crossed Sabres was better than that thing.

as if there were any comparison.
I don't get the slavish love for the Chargers unis. Yeah it's a nice retro look, but the best uniform ever? Hardly.
I agree with previous posters: I prefer a uniform with numbers but no name. I also prefer a clean, simple look.

Personally, I like the All Blacks' uniform (seen below with a World Cup patch; normally it just has the silver fern)
What a surprise. Here's the NZ women's basketball team uniform. I like this girl (even with the tongue):

They look like they are about to give the "chop".

But yeah, all black like that looks nice, if there is only one team doing it. In the mid-90's, it seemed that every stinkin' team in the NHL, and most newer expansion teams to MLB, had black in their uniforms. It's nice to see that trend dying.
are they at a soccer game or is that a musical about a soccer game?

Like mentioned before, everyone is biasedly going to like their home team, me included with the Redskins. But as far as black uniforms I can respect the Raiders silver and black pirate. I like the Dolphins uniform, the Bears, and I actually like the Bengals too. I like the A's in baseball. Basketball I can't think of any except maybe that Warriors "city" throwback jersey. I like Michigan's uniforms in college basketball a lot though.
I think they're doing the Maori haka there.
In football I think the best are the Bears and the Irish, but maybe that's just cuz they're the teams I root for. In baseball for some reason it's the Giants off-white home unis. Another uniform oddity for me is the fact that I have never liked any of my favorite (White Sox) baseball team's uniforms. Red white and blue, black and white, they just can't win. (I do like some of the ones before my time, however.)

The classic Astros do it for me. I don't know why.

Yeah, same reason I dq'ed the Browns - there colors are shades of BROWN. Bleh.

I personally wish the Jets would go back to their kelly-green 80s jerseys. The cry of "tradition" for their prior/current unis rings false - it's not as if they won 6 or 7 AFL/NFL titles in them or anything. They were good for one Hall of Famer and one SB title - then again, that's about as good as it gets for that franchise.

I saw one person once slam the old Bucs unis for being "dreamsicle orange" and then laud the Tennesse Vols.

Gay pirate aside, that one kinda boggled me.

I agree that the bi-curious pirate with the come-hither look was best discarded, but I always thought the color was OK as far as that went.

Personally, I like the Chargers' current unis way better than the powder blues.

The blue helmet looks better than the white one and I like the shade of blue better as well. As long as they have lightning bolts instead of stripes on the pants, it's all good with me.
yeah, I think the Chargers powder blues look pretty gay actually, yet I've always liked UNC's carolina blue uniforms, but UCLA's uniforms I don't think look good. Basically don't add yellow to light blue or it starts looking like it should be in Richard Simmons' wardrobe.

I'm not sure they're the best NFL outfits, but it's easily the best REDESIGN in the history of sports. They went from a laughable and long-maligned mascot and color scheme to one of the snazziest and most reconizable uniforms in the league. Honestly, even if the Bucs hadn't begun to perform in the late 90s, those uniforms had people supporting the team again because you could wear a jersey and not look like a total fruit.

Still, I'd get a kick out of them wearing the throwback creamsicle unis for a game. Word is Glazer and other members of the organization are too superstitious about reviving the old horrible record to even offer up throwback stuff for sale.

Indeed.

They are a rugby team, and they do a version of a Maori Haka (traditional polynesian-type dance/story telling thing). In that photo, they were performing their usual Ka Mate haka; occasionally they also perform a different, more controversial one (which was written to reflect the more diverse [less Maori] ethnicity of the team) called Kapo o Pango (in the linked videos, they are led by Samoan player Tana Umaga). Google also has some great video of other pre-game hakas, such as the one in which the Tongans respond with their own war chant.

It would've debuted late in the 95-95 season, but Keenan said no.

That stands as the only universally-loved decision Mike made in his tenure in the Lou.

Our clown jerseys from the same era tend to be fairly reviled, but I contend that if you drop the red (which I don't like in the Blues color scheme anyway), they're much less hideous.
Here's my starting five...

The current Philadelphia Eagles uniform. The white one's great, the alternate black one is completely superfluous, but the emerald green gets my vote.

The Georgetown Hoyas basketball uni (navy edges the grey) from when Iverson was playing with them. A pretty clean and simple design set off with an eye-catching detail, namely the African-type pattern on the side of the shorts and jersey. They've retained this design element since, of course, but the styling of the uniform has never been as clean and effective as it was back in the AI era.

The classic, Gayle Sayers-era Bears uniform with the long sleeved jersey. White or navy - both are great.

The white Golden State Warriors uni of the 80s - early 90s. These days, the Warriors unis look like crap with that hideous orange detailing and shitty Spawn-esque logo, but the ones sported by the classic RUN-TMC line-up, as well as a pre-coach-choking Latrell Sprewell, were so fresh and so clean.

The basketball unis worn by Michigan's Fab Five. Webber, Rose and co made nut-hugging shorts history (alright, so John Stockton refused to give his up), so their outfits (specifically the navy) get a vote for me largely for their impact on basketball fashion and aesthetics.
I agree with all of your picks there but I will point out that Jordan actually got the baggier shorts trend going in the late 80s before the fab five although the fab five accelerated it a lot. I also find it funny that some people like fucking Justin Timberlake or somebody like to wear a wristband at the top of their left forearm. They probably don't even know that they're jocking Jordan from back in 1987.

There's a surprisingly big push by fans on the team's message board to have the team wear the orange unis in the Thanksgiving game at Dallas. A lot of people, including Derrick Brooks, think a lot of good players stuck on those awful teams are getting slighted by the almost fanatical ignorance with which the current ownership wants to treat teams from that era, and wearing the orange just this once would be a way to say, "Hey, we're still that team, look how far we've come." I think they should do it.
