2006 NCAA Football Season - Page 3

Dammit. What's the deal with FSU making a 4th quarter kick?

We're self-destructing now.

He's a senior. The only way he would be able to come back is if the NCAA gives him another year, which I doubt will happen.

It's the under 3 minutes kicks that folks have to worry about.

edit: I am getting the feeling that this will come down to a last second UM kick.
Ok, yeah, fuck the timing rules. Miami would have another 50 seconds right now if the old rules were in place.
Good job FSU. It's gonna be a long season with this dipshit Wright at QB.
My favorite stat of this game is that Wright had like 18 completions but only 130 yeards.
Yeah, but UM doubled FSU's rushing total. 2 yards to 1.

A weight lifted off my back after this game. We tried to screw ourselves with the idiot playcalling of 3 straight passing plays with less than 5 minutes left. Had we attempted to run the ball even 2 times, UM would've had even less time when they got the ball back. I understand going for the kill, but geez, you just punch the ball in there and let the clock tick. And yeah, what moronic officiating once again by Ron Cherry's crew at the end of the 3rd quarter. He said put 12 seconds back on the clock, then they put 2 seconds instead, then the quarter's over. We scored 3 times in 45 seconds, but only 1 counted.

Next big game is in 2 weeks with Clemson at home. Go 'Noles!

Why do you doubt it? It's common for the NCAA to grant redshirts after a player played a game or two. Rhema McKnight was granted one after injuring himself in the second game vs Michigan last season. Petrino already mentioned it as a possibility. But, I doubt he'll come back anyways because he has a lot of time to heal and prepare himself for the draft. 8 month's is an eternity nowadays. If he can run a 4.5 40 by then he'll be fine. A broken bone isn't as bad as a shreaded knee. Anyways it look's like it got a whole lot easier for WV to run the table.

I figured ND would drop a spot this week. It's odd, though...everyone knows their offense will get on track, but their defense was a concern. So, after a game where their defense won it for them, on the road, people think they're a worse team than they did a week ago? (I'm confused. I thought ND was number 2 last week, but the above poll is week one, with no records)

I think they were too highly ranked to start, though. It was a natural drop off when they didn't have a North Texas to tee off on.

Unfortunately, I think UT is going to win this weekend. OSU looked extremely vulnerable against the run and UT still has a really strong D. It'll be great fun to watch, tho.

I don't know why it doesn't have any records, but it is the new rankings. ND was number two to start in both polls, so they dropped two in one and three in the other. As far as why the drop, well it's one of the things that sucks about the polls.

Agreed with this one. ND had to play a real opponent, while OSU and UT get cupcakes to start the season. As much as I am not a fan of ND ( I think it was all the NBC coverage when I was a kid), they do play a tough schedule every year.

I just hope it lives up the hype (well that and OSU wins...). The FSU/UM game last night was boring! I don't care what people say about the "great defense" last night. I claim really bad offense.

One (of the probably many I'll say this week) of the things I can say about week one is that NIU is much better team that North Texas is. So while OSU did give up some running yards, the kid (Garrett Wolfe - sp?) is pretty good.

Either way, I am a bit nervous. Let's hope that the starting CB that got busted last night doesn't play. He was supposed to be on Ted Ginn, and I would much rather have a freshman trying to stop Teddy than a senior.

That FSU/Miami game was just terrible. Good defense is one thing, but both schools are inept offensively and consistently make routine mistakes. It was basically unwatchable for all but hardcore fans of either team.

If Garrett Wolfe played for a higher profile team he would definitely be a Heisman candidate. He's going to kick ass in the NFL. I try to catch as many NIU games as I can just to see this guy play. Last year, if I'm not mistaken, he was second only to Reggie Bush in all-purpose yards.
there are few teams i love to watch lose... but notre dame, osu, and of course u of m are among them.

this week is gonna be a shootout, but i dont think osu's d can influence texas as much as texas' d can influence osu. plus its in austin, plus they won last year, plus people will be flipping out... new number 1 next week imo.

go trojans.

I think you copied and pasted your post from the one after the game in '05.
FSU in no way deserves to be a top 10 team right now.
ND survived a fired up GT... and so did I.

Man, I can't believe how dickish many of their fans/students were. They might as well have reverted to late 70's, early 80's form and thrown dead fish at us again. Horrible. At least I got to witness my brother knock out a GT fratboy asshole who looked just like a 20 year old M. Night Shayamalan.

On the game, the helmet-to-helmet call is getting WAY too much focus, especially here in ACC/SEC Or Bust Land. First of all, that SHOULD be called every time... especially when a QB is headed out of bounds. But the local media here would have everyone believe that one call was a conspiracy and the sole reason why ND won. Of course no mention of our 2 missed field goals. And what about the horrific holding call on Rhema McKnight that killed a very promising opening drive? Or the obvious cheap shot against Darius Walker (that took him out of the game for a bit) that wasn't called? Or the 2-3 make-up calls the refs made after the GT fans scared them with their plastic bottles?

Bottom line, ND was off and playing in a pretty hostile environment yet we still managed to come away with the W. I'll take it.

It's where they finish that I care about.

And what's wrong with them being in the Top 10? FSU and Tennessee are the only 2 teams in the current Top 25 that have a victory over another Top 25 team. Relax, it's just week one for jebus' sake.
I agree. I don't even start to care about the rankings until late October.

I very well may have. Why can't Bowden recruit some offensive linemen?
They all got hurt last year. Shit, we lost our best OL last year on the last play of a game that was already over. And our ever-injured 5th year C was the only OL that didn't get hurt last year. They focused on it more than ever this year, and I think 2 JC guys were even brought in, where FSU usually doesn't recruit many JC players.

I take nothing from the way the offense is going to play after the UM game. Weatherford was god-awful in the game last year, then went on to break the ACC record for passing yards by the end of the season. I'm just worried about the running game more than anything, as I was last year. The OL has got to play a few games together where they all gel and no one gets hurt. Once that happens, I think the running game will be fine. And Antone Smith is a monster. He still needs to mature a bit on the field and realize that he's not going to outrun and outcut everybody, but he's going to be a good one. Booker stutter steps and jukes too much for me. He's a guy you just need to run draws, and throw screens and throwback passes to, IMO.

Wolfe's too small to make any real kind of impact in the NFL except maybe as a kick returner. Yes, Barry Sanders was small too, but Wolfe just doesn't have that kind of transcendent ability. He's good, but he's not once-in-a-generation good.

He is small, which is certainly why Bush is better, but still, I think he does have the potential to be, say, a Dominick Davis, in the NFL. Not great, but does the job, and helps out all around.

But he's perfect for college. Small backs and receivers thrive all the time on the college level.

He is good for college, since he's faster than just about every defender he'll face. But in the NFL they'll all be able to chase him down and he's not big enough to withstand the punishment he'll take. He'll be lucky to catch on somewhere as a special teamer.
The only real problem is his weight. If he added about 25 pounds in the next year he would be fine.

Garrett Wolfe is pretty well shredded. If he gained 25 pounds, he'd lose flexibility and speed. 5'7" and 200 lbs don't mix well.

A friend of mine growing up went to GT ('97-'00) and from the stories he told me, your visiting fan experience is pretty par for the course.

Yeah, you're right, I was thinking he was 5'9" or 5'10".

He would be helping his NFL prospects if he gained 10, though.

Kickoff in like a half hour !!!!! I hope the Buckeyes dominate !!!! Waiting for this game has been like waiting for christmas. What the hell happened to Penn State? I was rooting for ND but I started feeling sorry for Penn State at the end.

Yeah I deal with the Buccaneers just squeaking by on sundays......I don't want to have to see the same thing with Bama on saturdays.
I'm about to go Elvis on my computer screen. 17-10, Troy over FSU with 10:00 left. Our o-line, who gave up 0 sacks to UM, can't protect Weatherford or establish a running game worth a shit.
Ugh. What a freakin' game. 4th quarter, we score 14 unanswered points. That's what happens when your team doesn't get to practice in pads all week.

If they keep this up, I'm going to have to stop drinking at the games.

And I see that FSU squeaks through as well. It kind of pissed me off that that game wasn't on CSS here as Troy is usually on CSS a lot.

God Tennessee's D looked like shit today. They better improve if they want to beat Florida next week.

I suppose I just don't exist, huh Chavez? *sigh*

Really, though, since the roller coaster of whether or not ND is back to a high point again, I'm getting really nervous about the Michigan game. They haven't looked great, but I'm sure they've been saving a few tricks for this coming weekend.
Yeah ND had some big wins early last year that madde them look great, but then those teams ended up being not so good. Gotta wait and see.
You wouldn't know if Notre Dame sucked or something last year.
How many bowl teams did Notre Dame beat last year? 2.

And I wouldn't be surprised at all if Penn State pulled a Pittsburgh this year.
Actually it was 3. But, how many Mid-American teams did Notre Dame play? How about the Sun Belt Conference? People like to nag on Notre Dame because the elite teams they always play had down years last season, which hardly ever happens, but their schedule was still more difficult compared to a lot of teams.

Mentioning playing bowl teams, that reminded me of something Urban Meyer continuously referred to during UF's press conference last night (it was a combined FSU/UF post-game show on Sunshine). They played UCF, and Meyer must have mentioned like 6 times that they (UCF) were a bowl team last year. I'm not exaggerating, he said it almost every time he mentioned UCF by name. I just thougt that was kind of funny. It was almost like someone said to him on his way to the podium, "...and don't forget to mention that UCF was a bowl team last year."
I think his thought process was that surely an "Urban Myth" wouldn't beat a bowl team.
Very nervous about Clemson. FSU lost 3 guys on the D-Line in the Troy game, one of them for the season. One of the strengths of the pass rush is the ability to shuttle guys in and out, but with 3 guys missing, that's going to be hard. At least it's a night game at home.
The running game will have to malke an appearance if FSU wants to win. Or else the defense will have to be very special even without those guys they lost.

If Big Blue can keep attacking on defense like they have been, you may be right to be nervous. The D-line and the 'backers look positively rabid this season. However, even though I am cautiously optimistic about my Wolverines, I don't know if they can get to Quinn enough to rattle him. We do have the speed in the secondary to cover "Shark", and Ecker and Massey are big enough to run right over Tommy Z, but we still need to hold on to catchable balls, and Breaston needs to have a huge game on returns. With all that said, if we win, we don't win by more than three. Oh well, I'd like to beat you guys, but if ND is the only "L" on the docket, I can live with that.

I may be cautious, but I'm not crazy. There isn't a TE in the country that's going to run over Tommy Z.

And tell me how great the linebackers are when they're not playing Vandy and Central Michigan. It's pretty easy to look rabid when you're playing 1-AA talent.
Like I said, "cautiously optimistic". And you'd take Zby at even odds against the nation's tight ends? Seriously, the guy is really good, and has an innate ability to find the ball, but he's only a foot taller than my ten-year old son.
