Also, This month's edition of Empire (Dark knight edition) has a fantastic 12-page retrospective on some of Clint's best movies with analysis from the man himself.

The former is ok/average, but the latter is worth watching. Joe Kidd is more unconventional compared to Clint's other western roles, and its a fun ride up to the train-wreck. John Sturges directs and Robert Duvall co-stars.

Clint Eastwood sale (WB) at deepdiscount.com till 6/8.

And the DIRTY HARRY flicks come out of the vault next month in a kickass set (or individually). Pre-order!

That is all.

Pink Cadillac is mostly useless, but the whole "Dick Head" exchange is one of the finest examples of Clint's perpetually ignored comedic talent. Definitely up there with the Mrs Grey/Shetland Pony incident.

Clint is, quite simply, the man. I haven't seen every movie he's done, but it's rare that I see one I don't like. Not many actors/directors have track records as good as his.

My two favorites from him are The Good, the Bad & the Ugly and Unforgiven. Somtimes, I think that the "Man With No Name" trilogy gets criminally underlooked when people are talking about the best movie trilogies of all-time. I've probably watched that one more than the Star Wars trilogy (parts IV - IV, of course).

I always preferred For a Few Dollars More over TGTBATU. Better pacing and bounty hunters are more interesting than con artists.

The Dirty Harry special collectors DVD boxset is awesome, and I haven't even watched the movies or docs yet! I was hoping for a slightly bigger, and metal, badge but that's unrealistic I guess. Love the glossy photobook and map of the first movie's locations.

Clint comments on his movies. Like how they've divided them up into 'dark', 'political' etc:

Watched BRONCO BILLY this weekend, haven't seen that since I was a kid. In HD, no less. Lots of fun. Sondra Locke seems to get raped or near-raped in all her films with him.

What a grand photo.

Wonder who Wayne was more repulsed by, Babs or Clint?
Most likely the homosexual standing next to him.
I don't think so, I remember hearing Wayne and Rock got along fine during THE UNDEFEATED.
You're right. Apparently he didn't care but had problems with what Hudson and Roman Gabriel were getting up to off the set.

Anyone know who the chap next to Clint is?
You got Rock Hudson, John Wayne and Yves Montand. Then Lee Marvin, Robert Evans, Barbera Streisand, (?) and Clint Eastwood.

Yes... The Rookie. It was probably done to pay the WB back for him wanting to make White Hunter, Black Heart.

Watched City Heat today. I count myself lucky that i don't share the same sense of humour as Richard Benjamin, my expectations were low with him at the helm but there was still a little hope present that the cool cast (William Sanderson as a heavy?) and a time period which i love to see on film would be enough to pull it through, but it wasn't. What a damp squib.
Eastwood and Reynolds are fine, the characters are by no means a stretch for them but they do play off each other nicely. I think the film could have done with Eastwood smacking Reynolds about a bit more, we only get to see a little Eastwood lovetap even though a final smackdown between the two is promised throughout. Instead we get left with a scene where it looks like Eastwood and Reynolds are going to kiss?

I would say the highlight had to be Eastwood's stink-eye at the end.

What the fuck is up with Sondra Locke? I know Eastwood was pretty much into her, but c'mon. Imagine where he'd been today if that had continued.

Also, modern generations can consider themselves lucky for not knowing that a) a monkey co-starred with Clint in not one, but in TWO movies actually and b) that there's an implied Anne Ramsey sex scene in Any Which Way You Can.

I watched Space Cowboys last night. I honestly had no idea that Eastwood directed it until the end credits came up. It felt nothing like an Eastwood film. Or a terribly good one, really. It defines the term "lesser Eastwood". There was practically nothing I did not predict. What a shit screenplay.

Fortunately, the cast dials their considerable charm up to 11, and manages to deliver something reasonably entertaining.

I was really hoping to love Tightrope, but it never clicked. The film is littered with really dumb story decisions, like, not unmasking the killer until the end during an underwhelming final action scene (With porno music?), and when the killer is finally unmasked no one cares because the audience has no idea who he is.

I also had to role my eyes when Clint revealed how he had a past relation with the murderer, literally ten minutes before the end of the film. Which makes me wonder, did the murderer know Clint had a kinky obsession, or did he just stumble on to it while he was raping women?

I did enjoy Clint Eastwood's character and the fact that Dan Hedaya was his "partner", but it was cliche beyond belief.

I watched Coogan's Bluff this evening, it was entertaining enough. I'd call it an urban western, what surprised me was how much of asshole Coogan was, he could be charming when he wanted to be and he does get a rough time of it but Coogan using that female social worker to get info on Linny then taking off was kind of a shitty thing to do. It was also interesting to note Coogan's naivete, he walks right into a trap then looks shocked when Linny betrays him. He get's pretty rough with Linny after that.
In a way, this film is kind of a precursor to Dirty Harry and Bullitt.

So Clint turn 80 tomorrow. TCM is gonna run a bunch of films all day starting with the DOLLARS trilogy and also including DIRTY HARRY and MAGNUM FORCE.

They're also gonna run The Eastwood Factor which is a documentary that previously was only available in that huge Eastwood: 35 Films, 35 Years box set that came out last year. That doc runs on TCM at 7:30 PM tomorrow.

This came up at the right time. I've been discovering Classic Eastwood for the first time these past couple of weeks.

Watched The Dollars Trilogy, Dirty Harry, Where Eagles Dare and i've got Magnum Force lined up for later today.
I definitively get it know. The man had a presence as iconic as it gets.
After MAGNUM FORCE you'll see some decline with the HARRY flicks. THE ENFORCER is made mediocre by its generic villains, but Eastwood and Tyne Daly's chemistry gives it some spark. SUDDEN IMPACT is full of great singular moments. It just loses its way a bit in the second half. THE DEAD POOL just plain doesn't work but you get to hear Liam Neeson call Clint "Love" so it's worth watching once.

Watch HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER as soon as you can.
Bump. The Chewer Movies thread has reminded me that I have I need to revive my Eastwood education.

Been on a Classic Clint Eastwood kick latelty. Just watched High Plains Drifter, and last week, Pale Rider. I wish the man would make one more Western, because he knows how to make that genre pop in ways no other contemporary director can (we'll see if Tarantino can bring it).

Pale Rider is just shy of being a brilliant movie. I give it one demerit for making the miners (led by Michael Moriarty) borderline retarded. Some of the townsfolk in High Plains Drifter are pretty stupid too, but they aren't out and out Man Children (well, except the fat Sheriff, who quickly gets demoted into just being fat).

I think next up I need to give ol' Dirty Harry another shot.

I adore High Plains Drifter. I prefer it to all of his non Leone westerns*. I wish it was brought up more often when it came to discussing the western genre.

*Unforgiven excluded.

About 10 years ago Clint was considering directing a Western called LAST RIDE WEST, but he seems to have had second thoughts. Great title though.

Coincedently, last night I re-watched THE GAUNTLET. It's a fun ride, with a great chopper/bike chase, but I had forgotten how violent Clint is to Sandra Locke. He really slaps her around in the first act. But she obviously didn't mind too much as she's nibbling his ear by the end.
