Please Kill Me: The Newcastle United Season 06/07 Thread

Well, the season is only twelve days away, and during the time since I last posted, we've signed a player, won a European tie and seen Nicky Butt miraculously score two goals in one game.

On the transfer front, the £5m capture of Damien Duff from Chelsea was a bargain and a half, and I'm sure he'll do well for us. With Amdy Faye set to go to Charlton - he was having a medical there today - thank god, that should pave the way for us to sign Thomas Gravesen from Real Madrid, who will give us a bit more fire in midfield and I think will pair up well with Parker.

The search for a striker goes on, with Roeder in Holland at the weekend running the rule over Dirk Kuyt of Feyenoord and Oberfemi Martins of Internazionale, both of who scored in their respective friendlies. However, it looks like Sol Campbell will sign for Portsmouth tomorrow, leaving another possible signing to the dogs. God knows after watching them on the weekend, we need a defence that doesn't look like they're imitating the Keystone Kops.

On Thursday we'll be travelling to Latvia to play FK Ventspils in the first round of the UEFA Cup qualifiers, after comprehensively beating Lillestrom 4-1 in the Intertoto. Unfortunately, our preseason friendlies haven't gone spectacularly well, with a victory at Norwich, a slaughtering by PSV and a 3-3 draw with Villareal (where Butt scored the aforementioned two goals) being what's gone down so far. Let's hope Freddy can open his chequebook quickly and we can get a striker and a defender or two before the game at Wigan.

Charles, what are your thoughts on Craig Bellamy? I know he played at Newcastle for awhile, and it was a troubled spell from what I've read and seen. I'm wondering what to expect out of him at Liverpool, aside from what appears to be a shit-ton of speed.

Also, I'm game for fantasy futbol if you're going to set that up.

Bellamy is a very good player. He has a shitload of pace, and he knows how to score goals, and I would have rather seen Souness go than him when he left Newcastle.

That said, off the field he's a twat, and admitted that he lied to Souness when he didn't turn up to training, and he's been involved in a lot of public incidents. But I'd still rather have him at Newcastle than Liverpool, cause he's hell to play against.

If we get the players I have in mind in the next two weeks, or by the time the 31st of August comes along, I will be very happy to go into the season with that squad.
Someone needs to tell him the season starts on the 19th.

he's referring to the transfer window. this way, he has a handy excuse for the first few games.

What is it about Newcastle buying players in positions that they don't need players for? Your defence is awful and yet you buy Duff and are after a striker.

Also (I'm a Liverpool fan), what is it with you lot constantly going after our transfer targets? Can't you afford your own scouts? Everyone knows Owen wanted to be with us (thankfully we didn't get him in retrospect) yet your moron of a chairman put in a rediculous amount that made it impossible for him to come home! Now it's Kuyt! Behind the scenes everyone knows he wants to come to us yet no doubt you guys will try and hijack it again by bidding 200 billion quid or something!

Seriously though, Fat Pie Head Shephard is dragging your club down, and Roeder! Jesus! The guy couldn't even handle the pressure at West Ham! Wait until a few results don't go your way and the fans get on his back, his brain will pop for good this time!!!

I can't believe you guys didn't go in for O'Neill, or at least Houllier! Yeah he ended up dragging our club down but without him I shudder to think where our club would be now, he'd have probably done likewise for you lot.

Anyway, good luck to you lot this season, although obviously I hope you finish behind us.

While I don't understand the lack of Roeder's interest in defenders at all either - although I heard today we might go for Wayne Bridge when Cole goes to Chelsea - we still need attacking players. We don't have a truly experienced left winger (N'Zogbia is great but still learning) and with Shearer gone and Owen out, we need some new strikers badly. Ameobi alone up front really isn't going to cut it.

Whaddya mean "now"? We've been linked with Kuyt since the world cup, and he stated on one occasion that he'd be interested in Newcastle. With all due respect, Liverpool - partly because of the European Cup success, but mostly due to their history - have the ability to attract most players just by snapping their fingers. I'd have gladly let you have Kuyt if we'd have been able to get Cisse, though. I feel sad for how Benitez treated him.

The same to you, son. I'll always have a soft spot for the red half of Scouseland.

I don't know if Campbell's a good idea, he's inconsistent and has had off-the-pitch problems - as I've mentioned elsewhere, Newcastle don't need more of that.

Ayala's available, and Spurs are eyeing him up, but I think him moving to Newcastle would be a pipe dream. Experienced foreigners don't seem to like going that far north.

Kuyt would be good, but Ashton would've been better. Martins can be pretty frustrating, and isn't really a "bang-em-in" kind of striker.

I don't agree totally with Nada on Roeder, but I do think he's been coasting on good will, and needs to churn out results at the start of the season (shouldn't be too hard with the opening schedule we have.) It might be difficult for a manager like Roeder, without much of a reputation, to persuade big players to sign, but I thought that was why Shearer was staying on as an ambassador.

Well, it seems we're being mentioned daily in the rumour columns, with the most realistic being that Thomas Gravesen will sign by the end of the week or early next week, with the vital factors being that A: Amdy Faye has officially signed for Charlton; B: Gravesen has been left out of Real Madrid's pre-season tour; and C: Gravesen's agent has mentioned he's interested in Newcastle.

Other rumours persist that Kuyt and Martins might be joining, with Roeder publically stating he's interested in both, and also Wayne Bridge joining from Chelsea, a move which would depend on Ashley Cole - who did not join the Arsenal squad for their pre-season photo session - going to Stamford Bridge. However, rumours also say that Liverpool are interested in adding Kuyt to their ever-enlarging striker pool, and unfortunately, if you ask someone whether they want to go to Anfield or St James', they'll say Anfield. Unless they're Damien Duff.

We play Latvian side FK Ventspils tonight, with Nicky Butt rumoured to pair up with Scott Parker in midfield after scoring a brace against Villareal on Saturday. Hopefully we can get a good result and get us in good sorts for the start of the season on August 19th.

A midfield of Parker, Emre, Gravesen and Butt is surprisingly strong.

When's Owen supposed to come back, March?

Not to mention Duff.

Last I heard was December, but it could be later.

10/08/2006: UEFA Cup Qualifying Round, First Leg

Newcastle United vs FK Ventspils
KO: 6.50pm, Skonto Stadium, Riga, Latvia

GK Shay Given
LB Stephen Carr
CD Craig Moore
CD Titus Bramble
RB Celestine Babyaro
DM Nicky Butt
CM Belogazou Emre
CM Scott Parker
LF Damien Duff
CF Shola Ameobi
RF Nolberto Solano

Subs:
Steve Harper
Albert Luque
Charles N'Zogbia
James Milner
Peter Ramage
Steven Taylor
Alan O'Brien

Summary - First Half

5m – Newcastle fumble, the defence looks a shambles and Ventspils nearly score.

6m – Parker shoots from outside of the area, ball is deflected and creeps past the post.

7m – Another deflection as Emre shoots, but the goalkeeper catches.

12m - A mazy run from Duff leads to a cross from the right from Solano, with Ameobi putting his header over the bar.

15m - Another cross from the right from Carr, but Ameobi cannot get there.

17m - Another run from Duff forces a corner on the right side.

17m - The corner is defended well, with a blocked shot by Butt being the only attacking chance.

26m - Good work by Duff on the left squaring a decent ball into the box, but Ventspils get it away.

43m - Newcastle's sieve-like defence works against them again as a Ventspils through-ball nearly results in a goal, with Carr thankfully dealing with it well.

44m - Free kick by Solano a few yards out of the box. Straight at the keeper.

Newcastle United 0 FK Ventspils 0 - Half-time: Fairly interesting game, pretty comfortable with their only chances coming from us making mistakes. We're lacking any killer instinct at the moment, so let's hope that changes in the second-half.

Second Half - Summary

46m - Yellow Card - Craig Moore for a collision with a Ventspils player.

51m - Free kick taken by Emre, but Craig Moore penalized for jumping on defender's shoulders.

54m - Good shot by Duff, but past the left hand side post.

55m - Emre shoots, but not powerful enough and the keeper handles well.

57m - A great ball from Babyaro plays in Duff, but his ball to Parker bounces off his feet and the shot is high.

60m - Latvian chicks: pretty hot.

65m - Good break by Parker, pass to Duff who shoots, keeper seemed to save it, but goal kick was given.

67m - Great play by Ameobi in left side of box, crosses for Solano who totally miscues. Doh!

70m - GOAL! Titus Bramble, great header from Emre's corner from the left.

74m - Parker shoots from outside the box, with Butt agonisingly close to getting on the end of it.

78m - Substitution: 14 Charles N'Zogbia (5 Belogozou Emre)

80m - Good long pass by Solano but too far for Duff to reach.

83m - Substitution: 16 James Milner (4 Nolberto Solano)

86m - Substitution: 26 Peter Ramage (33 Celestine Babyaro)

Newcastle United 1 FK Ventspils 0 - Full-time: good solid result. Not overly convinced with our play, but we got the result, and that's what matters.

MoM: Scott Parker.

Thanks Ade. The same to 'pool.

In news today, Shay Given has been talking about his back strain against Ventspils, and Roeder has denied a spat with Emre. Given says his back should be fine for the game against Wigan next weekend, and Roeder has said that Emre's trip straight down the tunnel after being substituted on Thursday night was not evidence of a bust-up, but rather Emre going straight for treatment after taking a knock.
It's a bit late, but I've not been online in a while so: My thoughts on Thursday's match.

Parker was trying too hard in the more progressive midfield role, and as a result was disappointing, squandering chances, and not being his usual altruistic self. I think we would've been much better off with Parker in the Butt role and 2 strikers so Duff could feed balls in, rather than having to go on runs into the middle all the time. Emre and Parker linked up well last season, and there are no major competitors for their positions, so they should be given an extended run side-by-side in the middle (if Emre doesn't bugger off before the transfer deadline)

Solano look heavy-legged, and should've been replaced by Milner much earlier. I hope his lacklustre performance was just a sign of lack of match practice, and not age catching up with him (he's 32 at the end of this year). That said, I think Solano should have a reduced role this season to give Milner a chance. When Dyer returns there'll be 3 competing for that position (even if Dyer doesn't like it that much)

N'Zogbia tried hard to link up with Duff when they were together on the pitch, but I think it will come down to one or the other, and don't like young Charles' chances against a recent high-profile signing and regular international.

Babayaro got off lightly when it came to shirking his defensive responsibilities - Aaron Hughes, where for art thou? He won't get away with it against superior opposition, and definitely not week-in week-out in the Premiership.

Also, more jolly japes from St James,

Football Player Crashes into Home
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/4788145.stm

This happened the day after Kieron Dyer had charges of indecent exposure against him dropped. Also in Norwich.

Is it some weird Ipswich old-boys thing, or is Norfolk such a den of inequity it draws innocent souls all the way from Newcastle?

You're right, I've never gotten along with Babayaro. I just hope the rumours about Wayne Bridge are true, and we can get a decent left back at St. James.

Well, five days to the first game and we're still a shadow of a side. After seeing us against Ventspils, I hate to sound this negative this early in the season, but we look fucked. Roeder keeps promising there'll be signings, and mentions all these players, but with Feyenoord asking too much for Kuyt, Martins apparently being six years older than he said he was, and Bridge probably staying as the Ashley Cole saga doesn't look to be resolving itself any time soon, we're looking bottom half at best right now.

Rumours are now persisting that Obafemi Martins' agent is desperately trying to get Premiership clubs to sign the player, with the allegations about his age apparently being unfounded, but it looks like Newcastle's interest has cooled. Martins is now third in line up front for Inter Milan after their recent signings of Hernan Crespo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The rumour mill has also thrown up Wigan striker Henri Camara's name as a possible target, which would be interesting as they are our hosts for the first game of the season on Saturday. Unfortunately, the rumours also say Dirk Kuyt - who on Sunday said he would be eager to fill Alan Shearer's boots - is a shoe-in for Liverpool, although it'll be interesting to see who'll be sitting on the bench between Kuyt, Bellamy (notorious for having a barny at anything) and Peter Crouch. The idea of an in-depth squad is always a promising one, but in this day and age, I wonder how many players will stand for it, especially considering what happened to Shaun Wright-Phillips, who certainly would have been in the England squad had Chelsea not kept him on the bench all season (although even at that, he would have been much better value than Theo Walcott).

More transfer speculation, with Guardian Online suggesting Newcastle have agreed a fee of £5m with Fulham for 20-year-old Dutch striker Collins John. John only made 16 starts last season, but scored 11 goals, making him an attractive and cheap prospect, especially in comparison to Obafemi Martins, whose market price - at least according to Inter - is £10m. It's probably a good thing we didn't buy Dean Ashton, who unfortunately broke his ankle earlier today in the England training session, and is expected to be out of action until November.

The Guardian also mention Wayne Bridge, although any deal is still very much on the condition that the Ashley Cole transfer goes through, and rumour has it that it's ready to go in the next couple of days. Hopefully that can all be tied up soon, as we're in dire need of players.

Roeder was interviewed on BBC Radio Newcastle last night, and gave an insight into his striker hunt, as well as his thoughts of some of the players and our defensive issues.

Quote:
Signings:

Kuyt: "Having seen him a couple of times now myself- although he's not the quickest - there's no doubt that in the Dutch League he knows how to score a goal.

"His body language on the pitch suggests he's the sort of player you'd like in your dressing room - fully committed to the team effort.

"We are not the only club interested in him - there is another club that's in the top four that's very strongly in for him as well as we are.
"We'd like to find the possibility of bringing this particular player to Newcastle."

Martins (and the alleged age disparity):

"If there was a difference in age then surely that has be reflected in the price.

"But that would not mean that he wasn't a very good player and he could do a very good job.

"We have to decide whether we believe what we are being told."

Gravesen:
"It's a possibility. He's a player I certainly admire. There is a possibility that he could become available over the next few weeks and I'd be silly not to be involved in trying to bring him here."

Bridge:"We will continue to look at a potential defender we could bring in before the transfer deadline.

Beckham: "no enquiry made".

Campbell:
discussed making a move with backroom staff but checked his record and was surprised how few games he'd played in the last couple of seasons. On a Shearer replacement:

"We needed to be looking at potential targets as long ago as 12 months ago.

"At the end of last season we should have been in a position to have gone and sourced three or four potential signings. But for whatever reason we were not in that position to do that.

"And that is why through the close season, myself and the backroom staff have been working very hard to playing catch up and try and find a player or two of enough quality to wear our shirt. It is proving very difficult.

"It's not just us finding it difficult. There doesn't seem to be a lot around at the moment and the few that are, seem so ridiculously priced. You have to pay way over the odds for someone who may be OK, but not special.

"We certainly haven't given up and we're in a position to be looking at three or four more players over the next seven days.

"But with the transfer window coming to a close at the end of August, a decision or two is going to have to be made very quickly.

"I'm confident we will have signed at least one striker before the window closes. Whether that one striker wears the number nine I can't say.

"It's a shirt that's not for a youngster with little experience trying to make his way in the game - it's for an experienced man who is confident enough in himself to put that shirt on again."

On signing Championship strikers:

"We believe there are only two possibly three potential strikers in the Championship who could come and play in the Premiership and we are constantly monitoring them
(presumably not Cardiff's Michael Chopra....)

"We don't feel that any of those strikers would be right to come in and take on the mantle of being our main striker, week in week out.

"The few young strikers that we've got
(at the club) will be given every opportunity, but at the moment will fall short of the quality that is needed. We'll just have to see how they develop over the next couple of years."

On a lack of quick players:

"We could definitely do with more pace in the side and that is one of the first things that I'm trying to identify when I'm bringing in new players."

Current players:

Milner: "I'm looking forward to working with him. He's a young English talent."

N'Zogbia: "There's no reason why he shouldn't feature as often this season as before - competition for places is vital.

"Charles has got a huge future at Newcastle. We don't want to burn him out.

"He's a joy to work with.... it's only a matter of time before he becomes a senior member of the French squad and I'm very happy that we were lucky enough to secure him."

Owen: "I couldn't say whether he'll play again this season, we'll just have to wait and see."

Dyer: "Kieron is very important to us - one of the few players who runs with the ball as quickly as he does without it.

"He's had an extended recovery time this time around - he will have been out just over five months by the time he gets back to playing in the first team.

"It is very possible that the two and three months breaks he's had before haven't been long enough.

"He's doing very well at the moment - I know our supporters have heard that before when he's come back and broken.

"There won't be any excuses. He needs to stay fit when he comes back in the middle of September.

"All the signs are extremely positive that when he comes back this time he will stay fit.

"Every test that's put in front of him he's passing easily. He's running at full speed and he's not having any problems the next day.

"We will continue to work him extremely hard to take him to breakdown point - and the important thing is that we cannot get him there.

"We will continue to be like that for another month or so and when we see Kieron we like to think that within 7-10 days of returning he will be up for selection."

Luque: "Albert has found it difficult to play at the tempo that we need him to. He's had a good pre-season and worked hard.

"His English is improving all the time and slowly but surely I'm hopeful that he'll be able to pick up the pace of the Premiership."
Rumours are going round today on Kuyt with different information - some people say he only wants to go to Liverpool, with others saying Newcastle is his preferred destination. I agree about Shearer - we've known for two seasons that he was ready to retire, and it's ludicrous that we're three days away from the first game of the season and we don't have a replacement. I also respect what he has to say about the number nine shirt, and I agree, that number means more to Newcastle than any other club.

Apparently, Kuyt said after last night's victory over the Republic of Ireland that "There are a few clubs interested - but only one is my dream club. "I don't want to say anything about that - but I think we can say more in a few days."

Which obviously means he's going to Liverpool. Fuck.

More bad news. After the confirmation that Kuyt is heading to Anfield, Glenn "Patience" Roeder has admitted Michael Owen might not play this season. Owen was originally thought to be back in March, but is heading to the States to have a second operation on his knee ligaments, which casts serious doubt over his fitness for any of the forthcoming season.

All in all a pretty crappy day for the Magpies. Don't worry, I'm not going to gloat about Kuyt & as for Owen, I've always liked him. He's too good a scorer to be out for so long & it's a loss for England too.

Former striker Les Ferdinand has voiced his fears to the BBC about Newcastle's lack of transfer activity:
Quote:
Former Newcastle forward Les Ferdinand believes the club will struggle to fill the gap left by his former strike partner Alan Shearer.

Shearer retired in April and with Michael Owen likely to be out for the season, Ferdinand worries the Magpies could find goals hard to come by.
He told BBC Sport: "It's very difficult to replace Alan Shearer and losing Michael is a huge blow. They need to bring someone in to support Shola Ameobi and Albert Luque."
Ferdinand, who scored 50 goals in 82 appearances for Newcastle, said: "I played alongside Shearer and his record shows he's without a doubt the best striker the Premiership's ever known.

"The club had a ready-made replacement in Michael Owen but life is going to be very different without both of them.

"Losing Shearer was a big blow to the squad and having Michael would have softened that blow.

"Losing two world class players at the same time will definitely be noticed but it will also give other players the chance to sparkle, particularly as Liverpool look like they are going to win the race to sign Dirk Kuyt.

"Ameobi definitely has the chance to shine. He's been in Shearer's shadow for the past couple of years and this will be the opportunity he needs to come forward.
"Luque isn't an out-and-out centre forward - his best position is on the left side - so it's not the same opportunity for him."
Can't argue with him, really. It's a frustrating time to be a NUFC supporter.

I don't rate Bridge as highly as others do, but he does at least defend. Are there any other decent left backs available (aside from Ashley Cole)? We've enough on the left-hand side of midfield, and enough overlapping runs from Carr to not need a pressing left back like Babayaro or (previously) Bernard.

Is that "two gun" Tino Asprilla in your avatar? His hat trick against Barca was something special, but the man was fucking nuts.

It is Asprilla! The man was insane, but god he was special on his day.

I think Chimbonda is available for the right price, but I also think we should have gone in for Curtis Davies. I like Bridge, but he hasn't really had that much of a chance to prove himself lately, seeing how he hasn't played that regularly.

Glenn Roeder was on Sky Sports News earlier, and said that they never bid for Kuyt, and also said that he's not too worried because they're going in with essentially the same side they did well with in the second half of last season. Unfortunately, Glenn seems to have forgotten a little guy called Alan Shearer, whose goals helped immensely in that period.

Rumours are now saying we're after Aleksandr Kerzhakov of Zenit St. Petersburg, although we face competition from Bolton, who or may or may not be Kerzhakov's dream club.

Newcastle will have some major problems this year if they don't get in some more striking power but the midfield you have should be enough to put you amongst the European places. Solano, Parker, Emre and Duff is a midfield that will overpower most in the Prem.

Do you regret losing Lua Lua to Pompey a couple of years back now?

Be thankful you never got Cisse. He's one of the worst strikers to ever wear the number nine for Liverpool. He may have had pace and power but he was clueless about how to play football. He is an athlete not a footballer.

Hopefully things will be sorted out at Newcastle and you'll do well. We need more teams competing at the top and Newcastle should be amongst them with the size of the fan base.

As the dodgy Photoshop job below indicates, Obafemi Martins has signed for Newcastle from Inter Milan for £10m, and will be unveiled at St. James Park ahead of the FK Ventspils game tonight. The Nigerian international signed a five-year deal, and if all goes well, he should make his debut against Aston Villa on Sunday.
